A cet instant, la came 9 commande la descante du piston 29 qui comprime le fluide dans les canalisations 41 et 45 à une pression progressive atteignant à bout de course 500 Kgs. par exemple.L'ébauche est ainsi soumise à l'action d'une pression progressive par le mandrin élastique, son rebord supérieur étant maintenu par une pression mécanique exercée par la bague 34 pendant toute la durée de l'opération Le piston 29 n'étant plus comprimé par la came 9;

Le fonctionnement de cette seconde presse dont tous les mouvements sont synchronisés s'effectue de la façon suivante;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Automatic press intended for the final shaping of molded cardboard objects"
It is known to squeeze or calendar molded cardboard articles using steel female dies into which these articles are introduced in order to subject them to a very high pressure exerted by hydraulic means in the interior of a. male mandrel made of an extensible material such as rubber.
The present invention relates to a horizontal automatic press operating mechanically and hydraulically and the main characteristic of which lies in the fact that the compression action is exerted progressively when the articulated arms of the press are placed in the extension of one of the presses. 'other in order to avoid any angular reaction and when the elastic mandrel has penetrated into the interior of the blank to be compressed.
A second characteristic resides in the use of three control caraes, one for the purpose of bringing the two articulated arms of the press into their horizontal position in order to make the flexible mandrel penetrate into the blank as mentioned above, the second controlling in the same way the two articulated rear arms actuating by means of a slide the low pressure piston of the press and the third actuating the high pressure piston, the compressed fluid thus acting progressively in the elastic mandrel. adjustment of the final pressure being effected by means of a piston regulator controlled by screw and handwheel, this regulator acting by varying the total volume of the fluid.
Another very important characteristic also resides in the press head which is rotatably mounted on an axis and comprises three axial shoulders with recesses intended to receive the

The first 7 controls the two arms 10 and II of the Dresse, articulated and i.-ourillonr-ant around the journal 12, this control being effected by means of the lever à3 idle on the shaft 14 and secured to the arm io , the end of this lever 13 rolling on the periphery of the cam '1 through the intermediary of a roller 15, The second cam actuates the lever 1 through the intermediary of the roller 17, this levi r being idle on the axis 18 and integral with the arm 19 journalled on the arm> 0 by a journal 21.

slide carrying at its end the male mandrel 33 made of an extensible material, for example rubber. This mandrel 33 fixed by means of the ring 34 is mounted at the end of the cylinder 35.
The low pressure 26 and high pressure 30 cylinders of the hydraulic press are connected to the adjustment device by means of the pipe 41. This device comprises a cylinder 40 housed in the base 2 provided with a piston 42 controlled by a screw 43 with a handwheel 44. This cylinder is connected by the articulated pipe 45 to the cylinder 35, this pipe being connected to a pressure gauge 46.
The press head is rotatably mounted on the base 2, the bearings of which support the central control shaft 47 on which the ramp 48 is wedged. This head has three radial shoulders 49, 50 and 51 with axial conical recesses taking the place of housing for the steel dies in two shells b2, b2 'in which the calendering takes place. In order to allow the choice of containers after calendering, these shells 52, 524 are partially driven from their housing in order to cause their separation by means of the fingers b3 controlled by the cam 48. Each die is retained in these displacements by two rods. b5 sliding in the guides 56 and coming to be fixed on the washer 57. Return springs 54 always tend to bring the two halves of the die into their conical housing.
The operation of this first embodiment of the described press is as follows:
The containers to be calendered are introduced one after the other into the two-piece die which is in the upper and slightly inclined position.The rotating head then rotates through an angle of 120 degrees so as to present the container in a horizontal axis in front of elastic mandrel 33.
At the same instant, the cam 7 brings the articulated press lever 10, 11 back to the horizontal position (figure 2) and the conventional mandrel 33 enters the blank to be calendered, then the cam 8 comes into operation to bring them back to the same position. arms 19 and 20, the latter extension having the aim of producing a low pressure in the elastic mandrel. In this position = the ring 34 is placed in the circular groove of the die 52 in order to mechanically conform the rim of the blank and prevent whether this is thinned by rolling or is irregularly calendered.
During the extension of the arms 19 and 20, the slide 22, moving to the left, controls the low pressure piston 25 of the hydraulic press, the fluid being thus expelled through the pipes 41 and 45 into the cylinder 35. and the elastic mandrel 33. The blank is thus subjected to a first calendering pressure of the order of 30 to 50 kg per cm 2.
At this moment, the cam 9 controls the descent of the piston 29 which compresses the fluid in the pipes 41 and 45 to a progressive pressure reaching at the end of the stroke 500 kg. The blank is thus subjected to the action of a progressive pressure by the elastic mandrel, its upper edge being maintained by a mechanical pressure exerted by the ring 34 throughout the duration of the operation. being more compressed by the cam 9;
the cams 7 and 8 return the articulated arms to their first position which aims to remove the elastic mandrel from the inside of the die then the press head turns again by an angle of 120 degrees, the ejection s 'then effecting by the separation of the shells of the die which are pushed outwards by means of the finger b3 rising on the ramp '48 and so on. The blanks thus made up to an impeccable finish without requiring other secondary finishing operations.
This press system can be employed with great advantages in the molding industry for injection or pellet molding of bakelite or similar products.
In this application, the dies 52 are replaced
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by appropriate nielles, which are closed automatically by the assembly of the cam '/ and the levers 10, 11, 13 the injection pressure -'tant obtained by means of the two pistons 25 and 29 acting on a fluid which controls a appropriate injection piston.
According to the second embodiment according to FIG. 4, the press also comprises two bases 1 and 2 assembled by means of two horizontal and parallel shafts 3 and 4. On the base I pivots around the axis 14 the articulated arm 10 to the arm 11 by journal 12, the latter arm coming to attach to the slide 31 of the press by means of the axis 37. uette slide ports, as in the first embodiment described, the mandrel and extensible material 33.
The low pressure of the stepped pump 38 controlled by an electric motor drives via the actuator 39 the articulated arms 10 and it, the end of the body of the journaling actuator on the axis 60 while the piston rod 11 is coupled to the barrel. - lon 62 of the joint.
The fluid comes to act periodically on each side of the piston b3 of the jack so as to allow the exit or the re-entry of the elastic mandrel in the blanks to be calendered, the press head 64 being actuated synchronously by a piston 65 moving in the fixed cylinder b6 and driving in a rectilinear reciprocating motion the rack rod 67 meshing with a toothed wheel 68. A wheel b9 has three ratchet teeth maintains the press head in its exact position in the axis when the elastic mandrel enters the blank. The piston b5 is controlled by means of the fluid arriving through the pipes 70 and 71.
When the staged pump 38 delivers fluid at high pressure, the latter through line 72 in the distributor 73 feeding the elastic mandrel 33 supported by the slide 31 as described in the first embodiment. As this slide moves forward or backward, the fluid line / 4 is telescopic. The distributor piston 73 is controlled by a cam 75 on the. periphery of which roll the rollers of the twin levers '/ 6 and 76' journaling around the axes77.
The operation of this second press, all of the movements of which are synchronized, is carried out as follows;
The blank inserted into one of the multi-piece dies of the press head is brought in front of the elastic mandrel 33 by the 90 or 120 degree angle rotation of said head. The actuator 39 entering in turn into action brings the two articulated arms 10 and, it in their axial and horizontal position, which has the effect of and silencing the elastic mandrel into the interior of the blank.
At this time, the distributor '13 actuated by the cam 75 gives passage to the high pressure fluid which. by means of a multiplier, or directly, penetrates into the elastic mandrel delivered by a telescopic tube to the distributor 73. The jack, returning to its initial position, drives with it the slide 31 directly or by means of a piston so as to pull the resilient mandrel out of the die. At this point, the press head again rotates a third or a quarter turn, with the completed blanks being ejected as described in the first embodiment.
The advantages of this press are as follows. ::
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
I - At the time of high pressure, all the components are in the off position, thus reducing wear and facilitating lubrication.
2 - All bending forces are removed and replaced by tensile or compressive forces.
3 - The chain is carried out in the dies in high position and previously heated, the blanks have time to come to the appropriate temperature.
4 - Ejection takes place automatically by mechanical thrust and gravity.
5 - The automatic opening and closing of the dies is obtained by simply adding up the die holder. walking. 6 - The pressure adjustment is easy to achieve during
7 - The edges of the blanks are calendered mechanically by closing the press and before the assembly is subjected to pressure.
8 - All the control devices with the exception of the high pressure control, that is to say the camshaft, cams, rollers and levers are not subjected to any force apart from the friction caused. to different movements.
The invention being described only by way of example, modifications can be made to it without modifying the characteristics thereof as described in the present memory. For example, instead of three dies the head could have a larger number.
Likewise, this head could be placed between two presses operating at the same time in order to increase the output.
