Palier à glissement à garniture coulée adhérente.
EMI1.1
--------------------------------.---------------
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Sliding bearing with adherent cast seal.
EMI1.1
--------------------------------.---------------
Sliding bearings composed entirely of zinc alloys have long been known; they are used primarily to replace copper alloys with zinc alloys, and in this vein they have gained in importance. The introduction of zinc alloys has been facilitated by new knowledge of a metallurgical nature, thanks to which it has been possible to avoid undesirable aging, for example by the use of refined zinc.
Zinc-based linings for bearings, in particular those made from refined zinc to which little aluminum and copper have been added, are characterized, compared with copper-tin bronzes or red alloys, by their best slip coefficient. They have, compared to the latter, however the drawback of having substantially higher expansion coefficients and a relatively lower stability limit over time.
This being the case, it has hitherto not been possible to use such zinc alloys for bearings which can only have a small clearance and which are subjected to it. continuous strong specific pressures. '
It seemed inadmissible to be able to use the linings of zinc alloys for housings of cast iron or steel, for example in the form of cast linings, or in bearings with adherent cast linings, because, due to the great difference between expansion coefficients
EMI1.2
iron and zinc alloys (11 x 10- versus S4 - Z7 X 10- the adhesion or bonding of the two elements seemed impossible to achieve.
Extensive tests by the Applicant have, however, shown that a good and perfect bond can be obtained between a cast iron or steel bearing housing and a zinc alloy sliding lining, if one adopts, for the sliding lining, a thickness which is small compared to the extent of its surface and, in fact, the adhesion is all the better and the limit of stability over time of the lining all the higher as the thickness of the lining is smaller. As a result, in practice, the thickness of the lining is, if possible, no greater than the maximum allowable wear for this lining.
It is thus that, for high precision bearings, the thickness of the sliding lining is only a few tenths of a millimeter and that, for other bearings, this thickness measures at most one or two millimeters. In these conditions,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the high coefficient of expansion of the sliding lining is practically no longer involved, since it only affects a small fraction of the tensile layer, resulting in it no longer having an unfavorable influence on the bearing clearance. In time, the influence of the limit of stability over time, in itself reduced, is eliminated, because all the stresses tending to cause aes deformations are absorbed by the bearing body surrounding the sliding lining.
For the production of the bearings described in the present specification, most of the known processes can be applied for the production of parts with adherent cast linings, in particular the centrifugal or projection processes; however, to avoid miscalculation when making the bond between the zinc alloy and steel or cast iron, it is necessary to ensure good deoxidation and to properly control the cooling process of the part to be adherent poured filling. As to the deoxidation means, particularly good results have been obtained by the use of fluorides, in particular those of sodium and calcium.
When cooling the finished adherent cast lining part, it is advantageous to cool down, after removing the heat source, the part and the slip layer simultaneously and slowly to below the solidification point of the zinc, and to accelerate the cooling of the part by switching to zinc from the hot forgeable state to the cold forgeable state.
