Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

   Dans ce procédé,pendant les manipulations de   coupure et d'enfilement sur le mandrin du tuyauen caoutchouc non encore vulcanisé, l'épaisseur des parois de ce tuyau est sujette   à des altérations; en outre, on doit employer une grande quantité de talc pour éviter le collage réciproque des parois du tuyau entre elles et sur le mandrin, de manière que le tuyau fini n' ait pas une apparence uniforme;

     Les   qualités des chambres à air ainsi produites sont   meilleu-   res que celles des chambres à air obtenues de la manière usuelle, puisque leurs parois présentent une compacité parfaite par l'effet deia pression interne reçue pendant la vulcanisation et elles ont une forme exactement   toroidaie;   en outre, toutes les manipulations sont supprimées, ce qui permet d'obtenir l'uniformité du diamètre et de l'épaisseur des parois; cette épaisseur pourra par   consé-   quent être réduite en épargnant du matériel; on élimine   l'emploi   du talc, ce qui permet d'obtenir une apparence meilleure dans le produit et d'améliorer les conditions hygiéniques des laboratoires;. l'encombrement des machines et des opérations est réduit;

 process for the manufacture of inner tubes for tires. cycles
According to one of the processes used for the manufacture of pneumatic air chambers for cycles, rubber hoses are drawn by extrusion, which are cut into suitable lengths; fitted on mandrels having an appropriate shape, vulcanized in a steam autoclave, and finally dismantled, by inversion, from the mandrel and joined by their two ends so as to form a closed ring.

   In this process, during the cutting and threading operations on the mandrel of the unvulcanized rubber hose, the thickness of the walls of this hose is subject to alterations; furthermore, a large amount of talc should be used to prevent the walls of the pipe from sticking together and on the mandrel, so that the finished pipe does not have a uniform appearance;

   finally, if the starting pipe is straight, the air chamber, to assume a toroidal shape after inflation.) will have to withstand tension and compression forces * All these faults, except the last one, also occur if the pipes are vulcanized on curved molds *
According to another method, tapes of raw rubber are used which are joined longitudinally so as to form a pipe which is then treated as mentioned above.

   In addition to the aforementioned drawbacks, there is also the non-uniformity of the thickness due to the effect of the longitudinal junctions. the process forming the object of the present invention enables all these drawbacks to be eliminated, while retaining the advantages, by eliminating any manual operation during the whole process, so that it can be obtained at reduced costs a superior product from all points of view * This process consists in the adaptation of the known process for the manufacture of rubber hoses. which is referred to as 'Plumbed Process' according to which the drawn green pipe is coated with a lead sheath, and then is subjected to internal pressure to vulcanization in an autoclave.

   The process according to the invention will be better understood with reference to the appended schematic drawing. A raw rubber pipe 2. having a uniform diameter and thickness, exits by extrusion from a wire drawing machine 1 and immediately enters a sleeve 8 which cools it and guides it to the torch 4 of a press which coats it with lead 5 The sheath 6 coming out of the torch 4 is immediately and energetically cooled to prevent its heat from being

 transmit to the raw rubber of the pipe 2 producing partial vulcanization.

   The rubber pipe 2 coated by the lead sheath 6 is wound on a drum 6 having approximately the diameter of the pneumatic cover which will have to accommodate the finished air chamber *
In order for the rubber hose to retain its original cylindrical shape, it is subjected to a slight internal pressure by means of an inert gas, or air, this pressure must be sufficient to keep the hose adhering to the sound 6, without, however, making it difficult for the pipe to slide through the sleeve 3. This pressure may vary according to the working conditions, but it should preferably not exceed 0.2 atm. Then we will increase it, for example up to 8 atm. and more, before introducing the coated drum 6 into the vulcanization autoclave.

   Once the vulcanization is complete, the pipe is separated from the sheath in the form of a tubular helix in which turns are cut, the ends of which are joined to form the air chambers with application of the valves.

     The qualities of the air chambers thus produced are better than those of the air chambers obtained in the usual manner, since their walls have perfect compactness by the effect of the internal pressure received during vulcanization and they have an exactly toroidal shape; in addition, all manipulations are eliminated, which makes it possible to achieve uniformity of the diameter and thickness of the walls; this thickness can consequently be reduced by sparing material; the use of talc is eliminated, which makes it possible to obtain a better appearance in the product and to improve the hygienic conditions of the laboratories ;. the size of machines and operations is reduced;

   finally, as a final consequence, a lower cost price is achieved.
