<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a PATENT OF INVENTION REQUEST Mr. Yser Raymond DE MUNCK improvement in the suspension of the rear wheels of bicycles.
The present invention relates to bicycles, and its object more particularly is an improvement in the suspension of the rear wheel, which consists in making this suspension independent of the frame of the bicycle and in making it adjustable. Until now, the hub of the rear wheel had each end mounted in a bracket rigidly secured to the cardre of the bicycle; these brackets being consequently fixed, and the axis of the rear wheel being mounted directly in these brackets, one could hardly speak of suspension of the rear wheel, nor especially of elastic suspension.
According to the invention, each of these receptacles for the axis of the rear wheel, instead of being rigidly fixed to the apex of the angle formed by the two forks of the frame, is made integral with an arm which is itself even pivotally connected to the corresponding arm of the lower fork of the frame, said arm being on the other hand suspended by its rear end from a spring attached to a similar arm fixed to the rear fork of the frame.
A real elastic suspension of said legs is thus produced, starting from the rear wheel, this wheel becoming independent and the suspension being adjustable by modifying the two attachment points of the spring at will.

So that the invention can be fully understood, there is shown in the accompanying drawing, a non-limiting example of embodiment, and more particularly: fig.l gives a front view, in elevation, of one of the legs and of its connection to the frame, fig. is a corresponding plan view, while fig.3 is a plan view taken on the leg alone and its support arm, with axial section of the pivot, fig.4 is an end view of fig.l.
1 designates one of the arms of the lower fork and 2 one of the arms of the rear fork. Until now, these two forks were extended until they met, where they were rigidly assembled.
According to the invention, the connection between these two forks is effected by a tube 3, starting from the lower fork and extending vertically, and by an arm 4, rigidly fixed to the corresponding arm of the rear fork and extending horizontally for to be firmly attached (welding, brazing, etc.) to the tube 3. Obviously, the elements 3-4 could be in one piece (angle iron), the main thing being that they ensure a rigid and undeformable connection between the arms 1 and 2.
5 denotes an open tab intended to receive one end of the hub of the rear wheel, this end then being held in any customary manner designed in this tab. Said tab is integral with, or with a part with an arm 7 pivotally mounted on the pivot-bolt 8 which passes through the junction apex between the two parts 1 and 3. The example shown comprises a ball bearing 9 but it is understands that any other assembly can be used which provides a pivot connection between the arm 7 and the assembly 1-3.
The arm 7 extends over the same length as the arm 4, to which it is connected by a spring 10 capable of being hooked to the various fixing holes 6-6 provided in each of the two arms.
The hub of the rear wheel, supported in the usual manner in the two lugs 5, is therefore suspended, with its wheel, from the elastically deformable assembly 5-7-la; the suspension is therefore really independent, since apart from the rigid frame, it is elastic.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
only (spring 10 and pivot 8) and it is adjustable (hooking holes 6, spring 10 load) to adapt it to the weight of the user.
It goes without saying that the example described is in no way limiting and that it is susceptible of various constructive modifications without departing from the scope of the invention as emerges from the claims below.
CLAIMS.
1. Improvement in the suspension of the rear wheels of bicycles, characterized in that the two open tabs in which the ends of the hub of the rear wheel slide and are fixed are each carried by an arm which is pivotally connected to the corresponding arm of the lower fork, and is connected by spring to an arm which rigidly connects the rear fork to the lower fork, this leg thus being integral with a pivoting lever arm, biased by spring, to provide an independent and elastic suspension.
