  MÉMOIRE DESCRIPTIF
DÉPOSÉ A L'APPUI D'UNE DEMANDE
DE BREVET D'INVENTION la Société dite: N.V. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN.

  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF PATENT OF INVENTION the Company known as: N.V. PHILIPS 'GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Machine comprising at least one piston movable in a cylinder.

In double-acting piston machines it is desirable to lubricate the piston rod at the point where this rod passes through the inner bottom of the cylinder. Practice has shown that in conventional embodiments heavy lubrication, for example splash lubrication, always causes a certain amount of oil to be carried into the cylinder chamber. As a result, excess oil gets into the cylinder chamber which can cause trouble.

To obviate this drawback, the machine according to the invention, which comprises at least one piston movable in a cylinder and in which the space between the piston and a bottom of the cylinder located on the side of the piston rod is separated from the atmosphere, has the particularity that on the side facing the piston, this cylinder base is made so that the piston rod is surrounded by a groove which contains a certain quantity of lubricant. The Applicant has observed that, due to the presence of the specified groove, a certain quantity of oil always surrounds the piston rod, on the lower side of the cylinder, which prevents the inflow of new oil into the cylinder chamber. . This avoids too much oil consumption. This is only true for machines with vertical or approximately vertical cylinders.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the grease groove or groove can also serve to lubricate the wall of the cylinder. To this end, in this embodiment of the machine according to the invention, the groove formed around the piston rod communicates by one or more channels, with another space, preferably of annular shape, provided. also in the cylinder base, a space which is located near the wall of the cylinder and into which a member secured to the piston plunges with each movement of the piston; organ transmits the lubricant entrained by the immersion resulting from the movement of the piston to the cylinder wall.

The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the features which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of said invention.

Fig. 1 shows partially in elevation, partially in section, a double-acting piston, housed in part of a cylinder.

Fig. 2 shows a section of the cylinder and the piston on the plane II-II of fig.l.

In these figures, the cylinder, arranged vertically, is indicated by 1. Along the bottom, this cylinder has a number of openings 2, for the admission and discharge of the active gas.

In cylinder 1, a piston 3 moves, fixed to a piston rod 4. This piston rod passes through the bottom 6 of the cylinder, through a guide 5. The passage of the piston rod 4 in the bottom 6 of the cylinder is closed, in the usual way, using a stuffing box 7.During the upward and downward movement of the piston, in the cylinder, a connecting rod mechanism, not shown in the drawing, projects oil against the part. the piston rod 4, which protrudes from the cylinder; An oil layer 9 is thus formed on the stuffing box 7. This layer lubricates the surface of the piston rod 4, which brings oil to the inside of the cylinder. Thanks to the presence of the lubricating groove 10, provided inside the bottom 6 of the cylinder, this quantity of oil is limited.

As soon as the lubrication groove 10 is filled with oil 11, the oil transport through the seal practically ceases: a state of equilibrium occurs. In the absence of this groove, the oil would be brought to the moment when the entire bottom of the cylinder would be covered with a layer of oil of the same thickness as layer 9, which covers the stuffing box 7. This oil would flow out. however by the lights 2 and would cause disturbances and / or oil losses; the state of equilibrium would not be reached. The method according to the invention therefore ensures that only a limited quantity of oil reaches only the groove surrounding the piston rod, which eliminates the drawbacks mentioned.

As clearly shown in fig. 2, in the embodiment shown, the lubrication groove 4 communicates by four radial channels with another groove 12, formed in the bottom of the cylinder and located in the immediate vicinity. from the cylinder wall. This throat is also filled with oil. The lower side of the piston 2 carries an elastic member 13, which presses against the wall of the cylinder. During the downward movement of the piston, the lower side of this member immerses in the oil which is in the lubrication groove 12, takes a certain quantity of it and, during the upward movement of the piston, transfers this oil to the bottom wall of the cylinder.

This lower wall is therefore lubricated. The degree of lubrication is determined, for a lubricating oil and a given temperature, by the length and / or the shape of the member 13. The excess oil returns to the groove 12.
