 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   La fig. 1 montre en élévation un élément transporteur, constitué par un transporteur dit de   Redler;
Les figs. 2,3 et 4 montrent schématiquement plusieurs combinaisons d'éléments transporteurs pour le déchargement des navires;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

La gis. 6 est un plan, avec coupe partielle, correspondant à la figo 5;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  Gebrüder Bühler in Uzwil (Switzerland) for the invention entitled: Transporter apparatus for bulk materials. forming the subject of a patent application filed in Switzerland on April 14, 1943 *******
The subject of the invention is a conveyor apparatus for bulk materials which is particularly suitable for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 loading and unloading of ships.

   The installations for unloading from ships, known hitherto, employ pneumatic conveyors or chain conveyors, for example so-called Redler conveyors, or even combined apparatus comprising pneumatic and chain conveyors. Dumpster cranes are also used which exhaust the loading by intermittent loads.

  However, all these installations have the drawback of being heavy and slow. They weigh hundreds of tons, are very expensive and require large-scale fixed or floating installations for their handling, which only exist in major seaports, comprising the port constructions necessary for this purpose.

   The aim of the object of the invention is to avoid this inconvenience and to create a device for the transshipment of materials by real vehicle with the aid of which ships can proceed to the loading and unloading of these materials in ports of lesser size. importance, regardless of special port facilities.

   According to the invention, this device is composed of separate conveyor elements which can be used separately and which can be arranged in series in any number, these devices being arranged for the automatic pick-up of the materials to be transported and consisting of in a way known per se

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 from a well or. closed conveyor corridor, with rotating conveyor means and a drive motor mounted inside or adjoining the demensions being chosen such that the hourly output or the weight of the volume of materials transported per hour reaches at least twenty times the own weight of 'a carrier element
In one embodiment of this device, intended to serve as an example, the weight of the various elements is equal to approximately 500 kgs for a working power of 50 t.

   per hour. This power therefore corresponds to one hundred times the own weight of the conveyor element. These conveyor elements are preferably constituted by so-called Redler chain conveyors, known per se, in which an endless conveyor chain moves the materials in the form of a direct current in a closed well. These conveyor elements can be used for transporting materials in vertical, oblique or horizontal directions.

   Thanks to the low weight of the various elements, the device according to the invention can be carried by the ships themselves, so that the latter are not dependent on large ports for unloading, transhipment and loading of wheat or other materials in bulk. The transport of items from one workplace to another does not require special means of transport but, on the contrary, these items can be carried by a few

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 men and oa can pass them by hand, for example through the openings of the. ship, where they automatically take, by their lower end, the materials to be transported. Of course, it is possible to suspend the elements from ship cranes or from mast brackets when available,

   Fearing the same working power, these elements require up to twenty times less motive power than the pneumatic conveyors employed to date, and their cost price is much lower.

   Apart from navigation, the transport elements can also be used for unloading and loading railway cars, for example, or for turning masses of wheat from storage sheds.

   The drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of a conveyor element according to the invention, as well as various possibilities of application of the device for unloading and loading ships.

   Fig. 1 shows in elevation a conveyor element, consisting of a so-called Redler conveyor;
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 schematically show several combinations of conveyor elements for unloading ships;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the ends, adjacent to each other, of two conveyor elements in series connected to each other by an articulation,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

The gis. 6 is a plan, with partial section, corresponding to figo 5;
Fig. 7 schematically shows the use of a conveyor element for loading a ship.

   The chain conveyor, shown in fig. 1, comprises a closed trough, in the form of a well or passage 1, separated by a partition 2 in a conveyor passage I and in an empty running passage 1. One end of the well forms a receiving foot in which is provided with an inlet port 4 for the bulk materials to be transported The other end of the corridor 1 constitutes the drive station 5, where the motor 6 is mounted inside the trough. By means of a transmission mechanism this motor actuates the drive pinion 7 of the conveyor chain 8 which is provided with the drive arms 9 known from the so-called Redler conveyors, In the receiver foot 3 the chain 5 passes on a deflection pulley 10.

  The driving strand of the chain leads the materials to be discharged from the inlet orifice 4 to the outlet orifice 11 provided at the end of the trough carrying the drive device. The conveyor element can work in any vertical, oblique or horizontal position.

   The dimensions of the conveyor element described are chosen such that it can be carried by a few men and that its greatest width, measured in a plane

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 perpendicular to the driving direction, not more than 1 m. For carrying out unloading or unloading operations from ships, and depending on the length of the path which the bulk materials must travel, a single element or any number of elements in series can be used.

   In the example following fig. 2, the bulk materials are transferred from a vessel 12 to a barge 13.

  A vertical conveyor element 14 is lowered through an opening of the vessel in the hold. Starting from the outlet orifice ae this element, a chute 15 leads the elevated materials towards the inlet orifice of a second element 16, placed horizontally, and the outlet of which is connected to a second chute 17 directing the materials in the barge 13 placed on the job. These transport elements can be arranged by hand in their working position. Cranes or other lifting devices do not need to be used for this. Of course, it is possible to suspend the conveyor element 14 from the potenoe 24 of a ship mast 25, so that it is maintained in the vertical position.

   If a ship's crane is available, it can also be used to lower the element into the hold 14.

   As shown on the right side of fig. 3, it suffices to provide a single conveyor element 14 to transport the bulk materials from the hold of a ship

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 in a down tube 17. When the level of the material in the ship's hold has fallen to such an extent that a single conveyor member can no longer lift the material beyond the loading opening, it is possible to d 'in a simple way, couple two elements to each other. As shown in detail in Figs. 5 'and 6, the receiving foot of one of the conveyor elements 14 carries a stirrup 19 provided with a pin 20.

  The outlet end of the other conveyor element 18 is rotatably suspended from a caliper 22 by two journals 21 and this caliper is threaded through a corres.- hole. laying on the pin 20 of the yoke 19 of the element 14.

  The conveyor element 18 can therefore, in two planes at right angles to each other, perform limited oscillatory movements about the axes of the spindle 20 and the journals 21, so that both , conveyor elements 14 and 18 lowered into the wedge can form an angle between them, as shown in FIG. 4, the lower element 18 then being able to take the materials along the side walls of the wedge. In this case, the receiver foot of the upper element 14 is provided with an inlet chute 23 which can be easily hooked on and unhooked and into which the outlet opening 11 of the lower element 18 emerges.

   According to fig. 4, the element 16 debits in a scale 26 installed on the bridge of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 ship and from which the weighed material falls through tube 17 into barge 13.

   The articulated connection of the two series conveyor elements 14, and 18, using the journals 20 and 21 could also be replaced by a ball joint. The coupling device between two successive conveyor elements can be enclosed in an elastic envelope serving as protection against fouling, this envelope being formed so as not to hinder the reciprocal mobility of the elements. Between two elements, one can also be satisfied with a hinge connection with considerable lateral play.

   In the example of fig. 7 Bulk materials are transferred from a cha land 13 to a seagoing vessel.

  For this purpose, a single conveyor element 27, which can be suspended from the bracket 24 of the mast 25 of the ship, is lowered with its receiving foot into the hold of the barge 13 and its outlet end passes over the deck of the ship.

  The material in the barge is automatically picked up and transported to the outlet end of the unit, from where it falls into the ship's hold. Another horizontal element could be connected to the outlet end of element 27, conveying the materials to openings further away from the ship's deck.
