<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PROCESS FOR PREPARING GLYCOLS AND THEIR ETHERS-SALTS
It is known that, by condensation reaction of terpenes or sesquiterpenes with formalin in the presence of acetic acid, monovalent alcohols are obtained together with the corresponding acetates.
The present invention, in which Mr Marcel Jean VIARD has collaborated, consists in applying these same condensation reactions to the preparation of glycols and their ethers-selves, in the presence of organic acids. For the practice of l The invention, a procedure consists, after having collected, according to the prior art, the monovalent alcohols and their ethers-salts by distillation of the condensation products, in continuing this distillation, which makes it possible to isolate glycols and their ethers. -salts, resins and compounds with high boiling points generally contained in these condensation products.
If it is desired to obtain only glycols excluding the glycol ethersalts, the condensation products are saponified before continuing the distillation.
The following procedures, which are also features of the invention, promote the formation of glycol products.
By carrying out the condensation with an excess of formalin, after distillation of the residue, a high proportion of glycol is obtained which has two primary alcohol functions. On the contrary, the formation of primary-secondary or primary-tertiary glycol is favored. operating with an excess of acid.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the Applicant has established, on the other hand, that it is also possible to obtain glycols by using, as raw materials, in the condensation reaction, perrenic alcohols instead of terpenes: in this case, almost all of the terpene alcohol entering into the reaction is converted into glycol or glycolic ether-salt, so that the yield of this preparation is particularly advantageous and may exceed 90%. In the latter case, and when operating in an autoclave, the reactions have a good yield, even in the absence of any organic acid, in particular when starting from terpineol.
Formalin can be used, either in the form of a 40% solution, thirsty in the form of trioxymethylene.
As acids, all organic acids can be used; it is sufficient to choose acids with a weak isomerizing action on terpenes when the terpene nucleus is liable to isomerize easily.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Applicant indicated this in a patent application of the same date, for: "process for the manufacture of terpene derivatives", it is in fact observed that in the presence of acetic acid, the condensation, with formalin, of certain terpenes, such as that pinene, limonene and dipentene give, besides regular derivatives, derivatives of isomeric terpenes which are difficult to separate from the former.
With these terpenes, the isomerization of nuclei is minimized by the use of high molecular weight aliphatic acids, or cyclic acids; on the contrary, with camphene or terpineol, acetic acid gives very good results.
The condensation operations can be carried out under high pressure or at ordinary pressure.
The invention applies to all terpenes, sesquiterpenes or terpene alcohols having one or more CH or CH2 groups, forming a double bond, such as, for example: Ó pinene, nopinene, limonene, dipentene, camphene, karyophlene, terpineol, etc ...
The following examples specify the procedure and indicate the yields which can be expected from the present process: example N 1, - 260 g of pinene, 80 g of trioxymethylem and 60 g of benzoic acid are placed in an autoclave; the temperature is maintained at 120 ° C. for one hour, then for half an hour at 180 ° C., the reduction reaches 15 kg.
The cooled product is washed with sodium carbonate and water to remove unreacted benzoic acid; the residual oil is distilled off under vacuum. 103 grs of pinene are thus recovered (i.e. 157 grs of missing pinene) and 80 grs of pinenylmethanol and 12 grs of pinenyl-metaanol benzoate are obtained
The residue from the distillation is saponified with potash and distilled again; 60 g of glycol are thus obtained, which corresponds to 36.8% of missing pinene.
Example N 2.- 616 grs of terpineol, 600 grs of acetic acid and 60 grs of trioxymethylene are heated for 8 to 10 hours at 120 -125 ° C. The reaction product is then distilled under vacuum, 350 grs are recovered. of terpineol and 430 grs of a mixture of two isomers are obtained, the composition of which, according to the ether number and the molecular weight, corresponds to a terpineol methanol monoacetate. The yield relative to the disappeared terpineol is 83.7% In the foregoing, the Applicant has given a process for preparing glycols and glycol ethers-salts, derived from terpenes.
She established that, by this process, we obtained bodies of the general formula:
EMI2.1
and the ethers-salts derived from these bodies.
The existence of such glycols and of their ethers-salts having in fact never been revealed before the work of the Applicant, the invention also relates to these glycols and ethers-salts, as chemical products. new, however they are prepared.
These products can be used, among other uses, as plasticizers for artificial resins, and in this regard they are also new industrial products.
