<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The Company known as: AKTIEBOLAGET W. DAN BERGMAN in SODERTALJE (Sweden) Nut wrench International Convention: Swedish patent applications No. 3887 filed on 15. 5.45 and No. 1120 filed on 7.2.1946 by August Gunnar Ferdinand WALLGREN, whose plaintiff is the 'have right.
Until now, nut wrenches were generally made entirely of steel, that is to say, as regards both the handle or rod and the head, the latter comprising a housing corresponding to the contour of the head of the screw. It follows that the keys are of a fairly heavy weight, which implies certain disadvantages, for example with regard to portable tool boxes for mechanics, boxes containing a large number of keys. Due to the total weight of the keys, tool boxes are so heavy that they often become difficult to handle.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a nut wrench which, while offering perfect strength characteristics, has a weight which is only half or a quarter, or even less.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in large dimensions, that of the keys currently in use. Another object of this invention is to provide a key having an extremely low weight, while having dimensions which do not exceed the usual dimensions of common keys. Keys according to the invention can also be constructed in the larger sizes currently in use.
Other objects and other advantages of the invention will emerge from the following description, considered in relation to the accompanying drawings which form an integral part thereof, and in which: FIG. 1 is an elevational view of a key made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the key along the line II - II of FIG. 1, considering the head of the key.
Fig.3 is an elevation view of a key following a variant of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line IV - IV of FIG. 3, considering the head of the key.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a key, according to a third variant. a / fig. 6 is / sectional view along the line VI - VI of FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view along the line VII - VII of FIG. 5.
In these drawings, 10 designates the handle of the key, this handle being made of light metal, that is to say alloys which generally include aluminum and magnesium. In the embodiment according to figs. 1 and 2, the head 12 of the key constitutes a single part provided with a housing 14 q corresponds to the contour of the nut called to be turned by means of the key. The head 12 is made of steel. The two elements 10 and 12 are rigidly joined to one another, this fixing consisting of a construction which appears to be laminated in section, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in this sense that element 12 preferably has a notch intended to receive a tongue projecting from element 10.
The interlocking "sheets" or blades can be arranged in a number, in particular in the case of large keys, one of the elements being provided with two or more notches called to receive corresponding tabs projecting from the. other element.
In the embodiment shown in figs.
1 and 2, the end of the handle 10 terminates in a projection or a tenon 16 of rectangular section and of a width less than that of the handle 10. The tenon 16 has an end surface 18 slightly inclined with respect to a line that goes through the center of the handle.
The tenon 16 is limited by shoulders or recesses 20 from which the thickness of the handle increases, in the manner of a wedge, towards the shoulders 22, as indicated at 24. One or more transverse holes 26 are provided. -how to partially cross the tenon 16.
The head 12 has a notch which has a shape corresponding to that of the end of the handle 10. Consequently, this notch is internally limited by a portion with a square section, the bottom 28 of which is however oriented at right angles by relative to the axis of the handle, so that a wedge-shaped space is left between the end surface of the tenon 16 and the bottom of the notch. The latter is constricted near the aforementioned part with a square section, and then flares out like a wedge. The bores 26 correspond to the bores 30 of the head 12, the latter preferably being chamfered.
After the end of the handle 10 has been introduced into the head 12, a key 32 is pressurized between this end and the bottom 28 of the notch so that a rigid connection is established between the two elements 10 and 12 of the key. The key determines in the head 18
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
higher voltages than those which appear below when the key is in use. Finally, a rivet 33 is introduced into the bores 26 and 30 (not shown in FIG. 2), so as to join the elements 10 and 12 in an inseparable manner. The height of the part of the rod which engages in the head of the key is greater than the height of the handle itself, retort it emerges from FIG. 1.
The head preferably has recesses 35 in order to reduce the pea.
The embodiment according to f igs. 3 and 4 differs from the previous ones essentially in that the handle 10 of light metal has an end 24 which has the same or approximately the same contour as the head. The end 34 is covered on both sides with steel plates 36 fixed with a suitable number of rivets 58. The housing 14, the shape of which corresponds to that of the head of the bolt, is therefore closed in this case by the steel plates 36 and by an intermediate layer of light metal, protected by these plates. The contact faces 40 between the plates 36 and the handle 10 are preferably tapered and preferably extend over the entire surface of the handle, such that the thickness of the handle 34 increases away from the housing 14. .
In addition, the faces 40 of the plates 36 are provided with a series of fine protuberances, cents or the like. When fixing plates 36 by means of rivets, these protuberances penetrate the light metal and provide a very rigid connection.
In the embodiment according to figs. 5 to 7, the head has a recess 42 on each side, these recesses widening progressively towards the housing 14, and preferably embracing the latter in part, as indicated at 44, the arrangement being such that these recesses extend towards the interior on the claws 43 which determine the housing 14. The recesses 42 are li-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
rimmed from the side of housing 14, as well as laterally by a relatively narrow portion 45. The posterior edge of the head has a portion 46 which is preferably straight and somewhat thicker than portion 48 of the head, which is left between the recesses 42, but which is considerably narrower than the edge 45, as shown in FIG. 6.
The part 46 is provided with two orifices 50 disposed near the claws or jaws 43. The rod 10 has two branches 52 which embrace the parts 46 and 48 of the head, while entering the recesses 42 and filling the orifices 50. The branches 52 thus form a whole with the metal disposed in the orifices 50. The branches 52 have a width greater than that of the remainder of the rod 10, in particular than the rectilinear part or handle, called to be gripped by the hand. Preferably, part 46 extends a certain distance inwardly over part 45, as indicated at 54 in fig. 1.
The handle or rod 10 may be provided with lengthwise recesses 56 to reduce the weight of the handle, while the end of the latter is provided with a hole 54. Au point where the handle gives rise to the two branches 52, it has a greater width than in the part forming the handle itself, as can be seen from FIG. 5.
The key according to this latter variant is preferably established by a process consisting in placing the steel head of the key in a shell mold, the interior cavities of which correspond to the shape of the handle of the key. Light metal is poured in the liquid state into the shell, this light metal having at this time a temperature of 700 to 800 ° C. for example. The cast metal now fills the recesses 42 and the orifices 50, so that a single metal body is obtained.
The blank which constitutes the key is then subjected to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the action of a power hammer, in order to receive its final shape. During the casting operation, the parts of the head which form the active faces of the housing 14 have been annealed, so that they must undergo a new quenching. This can be achieved, for example, by placing a high frequency coil inside the housing 14, such a coil being, as is known, capable of heating the surface layer of the housing very quickly, before the other parts of the housing. key do not have time to heat up to an unfavorable degree. After cooling, the housing surfaces provide the desired hardness.
Subsequent quenching can be carried out using a very powerful gas flame, while most of the key is immersed in water. the steel head 12 contains at least 0.35% carbon and, preferably, 0.45% carbon and more.
Although only one more or less specific embodiment of the invention has been shown, it should be noted that this was done only for an illustrative purpose and that the invention should not be regarded as limited to this mode of execution, but that its. scope is to be determined by the following claims, considered in the light of prior devices.
