Fig. 2 est une vue en coupe suivant la ligne 2-2 de Fig. 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY. in support of an application for a PATENT OF INVENTION "Improvements to liquid fuel combustion apparatus for the generation of driving gases. the Company called: JOSEPH LUCAS LIMITED, Great King Street, Birmingham, (Great Britain).
Form the subject of a first patent application filed in GREAT BRITAIN, September 29, 1943, N 15999 (completed October 5, 1944), in the names of the aforesaid plaintiff and Messrs. Ernest Ansley WATSON and John Stanley CLARKE, including she is the beneficiary.
The object of the invention is an improved apparatus for the combustion of liquid fuel, necessary for the production of propellants for use as or in combination with engines.
The invention comprises the combination, - with an outer casing, a combustion chamber arranged inside the latter and separated therefrom by an air space, a liquid fuel nozzle located at one end of the combustion chamber, and a screen surrounding the region immediately adjacent to the discharge end of the nozzle, - a perf @ rée partition associated with the screen and able to serve the dual purpose of admitting a reduced supply of air into the chamber. combustion and forcing said air to enter; The chamber in the form of converging jets.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the accompanying explanatory drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevational view of a liquid fuel combustion apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1, illustrating an alternative embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
In the embodiment according to Figs. 1 and 2, use is made of a cylindrical outer casing a, inside which is arranged a cylindrical combustion chamber b, which is separated from the casing by an annular air space c, at one end from which air supplied by a blower or other source can be brought. At one end (which will be called the inlet end) of the combustion chamber b, is mounted a nozzle d which is arranged with the chamber and with the aid of which liquid fuel, coming from a pump or a another source, can be supplied in the form of a jet in said end of the combustion chamber.
Around the outlet end of the nozzle is arranged a screen in the form of a truncated cone or a bell, the wider end of which faces the combustion chamber b. The ± screen serves to form a region of relatively calm - or non-turbulent - air in the immediate vicinity of the discharge end of the nozzle d. Air can be brought from the annular space c to said region beyond stationary guide vanes f provided in a cylindrical extension g of the narrow end of the screen e, these guide vanes being suitable for print a unified rotary motion in air. The nozzle d can also be surrounded by another narrower screen h, which has a cylindrical shape and has a diameter slightly larger than the nozzle.
This screen h forms, with the nozzle, an annular passage 1 in which the air coming from the inside of the casing can enter through one or more openings hl made in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the screen, and through which and air can flow to prevent excessive heating of the nozzle.
. A perforated partition j of frustoconical, hemispherical or other suitable shape is arranged at the inlet end of the combustion chamber b and around the screen e. This partition j is designed to serve the dual purpose of admitting a reduced supply of air from the annular space to the combustion chamber ±, and of bringing this air intake to the region between the.
partition and the screen e and the part of the combustion chamber ± situated immediately in front of the screen, in the form of converging jets which, as a result of their impact on the screen and between them, produce a state of energetic and disorderly turbulence in the region of the combustion chamber in front of that surrounded by the screen.
The additional air required in the combustion chamber b is supplied by the annular space c at suitable places,, through perforations such as m and / or short perforated pipes such as n which enter the combustion chamber.
The air coming from the blower or from another source can be brought into the annular space. 2, at its end remote from the inlet into the combustion chamber b, in which case a baffle 9 can be provided. in the end of the housing which contains the nozzle, to direct air towards the guide vanes f. It is also possible to provide an annular scoop p arranged around the inlet end of the combustion chamber b to direct air into the adjacent part of the chamber, through perforations in a flange q connecting the partition. to the bedroom.
Alternatively, air from the blower or other source may be drawn into the annulus at its end adjacent to the inlet of the combustion chamber, in which case the end of the annulus. The space which is remote from the entrance to the combustion chamber is closed.
The combustion products are evacuated from the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
combustion b through a laterally extending exhaust r, the end remote from the inlet, and are used for propulsion purposes and / or to operate a turbine. in order to ignite the mixture of dispersed liquid fuel and air in the combustion chamber b, all usual and appropriate electrical means can be used.
Instead of being arranged around the conical or bell-shaped screen, the perforated partition can be formed by an extension of this screen, an example of execution of this variant being shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which elements similar or analogous to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are indicated by the same references, accompanied by the exponent 1. In the example shown in Figs. 3 and 4, air from the blower or from another source is brought into the annular space c1 at its end adjacent to the inlet end of the combustion chamber bl, the other end of said space being closed.
The wider end of the screen e1 is also extended to form the perforated partition jl, and is surrounded by a domed annular cover s1 which is provided, near the cylindrical extension gl with the screen, large perforations t1 through which air can flow from the annular space c1, while stationary guide vanes, ires f1, as described above, are arranged between said extension and nozzle d1. In addition, the combustion chamber b1 has, in suitable places, perforations m1 through which additional air is supplied from the annular space c1 to the combustion chamber.
The present invention allows the combustion of liquid fuel to be carried out within wide limits of variation of the fuel-air ratio, and this in a very simple and satisfactory manner.
The invention is not, however, limited to the examples described above, since details of secondary importance can be modified according to various needs.
