PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX BRULEURS A COMBUSTIBLES LIQUIDES,
NOTAMMENT A MAZOUT.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO LIQUID FUEL BURNERS,
IN PARTICULAR OIL.
The invention relates to burners for liquid fuels, in particular for oil, and relates in particular, among these burners, to those in which the fuel and the combustion air flow, at least initially, in opposite directions.
In such a case, when the fuel is supplied through a normal nozzle, the mixing of fuel and air does not take place as intimately as desirable, and when pressurized combustion air is employed, The arrival of fuel to the burner may be obstructed or even completely pocketed.
The object of the invention is above all to remedy these drawbacks.
For this purpose, in accordance with one characteristic of the invention, fuel is introduced into the combustion space of the burner, in the form of divided jets, in particular in the form of thin threads or thin blades, mostly forming a angle of significant value, preferably an angle close to 90, with the initial direction of the air flow.
According to another characteristic of the invention, when the combustion air is introduced under pressure, a screen is interposed between the air stream and at least those of the fuel threads or blades flowing in, or approximately in the opposite direction.
In the implementation of the invention, according to a preferred embodiment of the nozzle for introducing fuel into the burner, the or certain fuel outlet passages are given the form of narrow elongated slots.
This gives a regular flow and rapid vaporization.

pide of the fuel as well as its intimate mixture with. combustion air, even though this is introduced under pressure.
Other characteristics and results of the invention will emerge from the more detailed description which follows, with the aid of the appended drawing in which:
Fig.lest a view in elevation and section of a burner provided with the improvements of the invention, mounted in a partially figured hearth; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevational view, partly in section, of another embodiment.
Referring first to Fig. 1, 1 as a whole denotes a fireplace, of which 2 is the combustion chamber, 3 the chimney duct, and 4 the ashtray space.
Between the combustion chamber 2 and the space 4 of the ashtray, is mounted a sealed partition 5 in which is fitted the burner comprising, as shown, a bowl 6 through its bottom by a nozzle 7 for feeding fuel, connected suitably, through a partially shown conduit 8, to a source of supplying liquid fuel, such as fuel oil, not shown.
Above, and at some distance from the nozzle 7, opens a combustion air supply duct, 9, starting in the space 4- of the ashtray, for example, as shown, on both sides other of the bowl 6.
It will be understood that the combustion air is induced to flow through the duct 9 by the call of the chimney 3, the draft of which can if necessary be increased by any mechanical propellant, and forms by opening from the duct 9 a downward current meeting, surrounding and licking the nozzle 7 to then reverse its direction of flow and cross the combustion chamber 2 in order to join the chimney duct 3.
To, with this air, achieve an intimate mixture of the fuel and ensure the rapid vaporization of the latter, the nozzle 7, which may or may not include an axial flow channel such as 10, is made to understand clean passages to form thin threads or thin films of fuel directed so that the angles they make with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the descending air current have significant values, preferably close to 90.
These passages are shown, in the right part of the nozzle 7 as formed by perforations 11 substantially perpendicular to the external face of the wall of this nozzle and, in its left part, by elongated slots 12, more or less normal to this surface.
The fuel passing through these perforations or slits is presented to the air stream coming from the duct 9 in a very divided form, and it is thus much more easily vaporized and intimately mixed with the combustion air.
Moreover, even if the plunging action of the air is violent, as for example when the space 4 of the ashtray is put under pressure, the flow of fuel through the perforations 11 or slots 12 can still continue. , which would not be the case if the fuel flowed only through an axial channel such as 10, in which case the air pressure, acting directly on the edge of this channel, could delay the flow of fuel to, or even prevent it from reaching the flow end of the channel.
This is the case of an introduction under pressure of the combustion air which has been envisaged in FIG. 2, the nozzle 7 comprising an axial channel 10 as well as slots 12 opening onto its lateral surface. .
To prevent an unfavorable antagonistic action of the air flow emerging from the duct 9 on the edge of the axial channel 10 of the nozzle 7, either the end of this channel is closed, the flow of fuel taking place only through the slots 12, or better still, as shown, there is placed over the open end of the channel 10 a cap 13 forming a screen between the air stream and this open end.
The cap 13 can be shaped so as to simply play the role of a screen, that is to say to have no action on the flow of the fuel, or else so that the streams of air flowing over its external surface generates at its lower free edge 14, in the space between the latter and the external surface of the nozzle 7, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
depression which, by influence, acts on the end of the channel 10, and on the slits or parts of slits 12 covered with the end of the nozzle and thus determines a flow rate of this channel and of these slots or parts of it. slots in relation to the depression, that is to say with the blowing pressure of the combustion air.
Such a conformation will for example be similar to that of a shell head.
The cap 13 may be held in place in any suitable manner, for example, as shown, joined to the nozzle by two or three internal radial branches such as 15.
Although we have limited ourselves to the more detailed description of certain embodiments only, it is understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that it also encompasses modifications and variations.
