 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

  IMPROVEMENTS TO REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEMS.

   The present invention relates to improvements to remote control systems.

   The remote control of the tuning of radio receivers requires very high precision in the adjustment of the capacitor, multiple and of the tuning index at a distance. Most mechanical methods, using flexible cables, suffer from a lack of precision due to play in the cable or in the gears associated with it, whereas automatic electrical tuning is only applicable to very small frequency changes and could not be used to control the receiver over its full tuning range. On the other hand, mechanical control systems

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 are difficult to install, because the admissible number of bends in the cable is strictly limited and sufficient radii must be provided for these bends, which considerably increases the installation difficulties.

   The invention consists of an arrangement for the remote control of the tuning of a radio-electric device comprising a signaling link between a control station and the control device, as well as a remote control system. particular of a type well known per se. Said particular remote control system has considerable advantages in its novel application to the remote control of the tuning of a radio apparatus, in particular for aviation.

   The tuning element of the radio-electric device, for example a multiple capacitor, can be precisely set by means of this remote control system to a particular position chosen from a large number of positions. also spaced apart, and e by means of a step-by-step mechanism.

   Fine tuning between these positions can be obtained by means of a slight reworking of the setting of the beat-frequency oscillator of the receiver, according to any of the conventional methods of frequency control, for example by means of the Miller effect, a variation in the operating potentials of the oscillator tube, a capacitance transferred to the terminals of the tuning circuit of the oscillator or any other suitable means.

   The pulse-actuated control system is preferably provided at the control station, with an index moving on a scale, in synchronism with the movement of the distant tuning element.

   The indication of the agreement between the above-mentioned degrees is obtained by arranging that the operation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the fine tuning control rotates the tuning scale slightly behind the index operated by the stepping system, allowing the receiver tuning to be performed normally across the full scale, by means of two commands, one master tuning command for the stepping mechanism and another for the fine tuning command.

   The invention will be better understood on reading the following detailed description and on examining the accompanying drawings which schematically represent, by way of nonlimiting examples, some embodiments.

   FIG. 1 shows the mechanism associated with the tuning capacitor of the receiver.

   FIG. 2 is the representation of the mechanism corresponding to the maneuvering point of the remote control.

   Figure 3 represents the connection circuit between the mechanisms of figures 1 ¯ and 2.

   Figure 4 relates to a control mechanism constituting a variant of that shown in Figure 2.

   FIG. 6 is the circuit of a device according to the invention, allowing the control of a determined frequency.

   FIG. 7 represents the circuit of a system in which the tuning of the receiver can be effected, either directly on the receiver itself, or at a remote control point, the choice between the two control points. being determined at the remote control station.

   FIG. 8 represents a similar circuit, except that the choice of the control point can be made at one or the other point.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The stepping mechanism consists of two parts, one set mounted on the tuning capacitor of the receiver and another set mounted at the remote control station.

   A set 1 of ratchet wheels 4,5, 6, (Figure 1) is mounted directly on the axis of the multiple capacitor 2. The teeth of the wheel 4 are arranged for the rotation of said wheel in the direction of the needles. of a watch, those of wheel 5 are arranged for rotation in the opposite direction and the teeth of wheel 6 are in the form of symmetrical wedges and engage with a retaining pawl 7, fixed to the frame of the mechanism 8, in order to fix the capacitor very clearly in any latching position.

   As the ratchet wheels 1 are mounted directly on the axis 2 of the capacitor and the retaining pawl 7 engages directly with the wedge setting wheels 6, one obtains. a very precise positioning of the condenser and one eliminates the play due to the bearings and the transmission members and the uncertainty of agreement which would result therefrom. The bearings of the multiple capacitor are of the normal thrust ball bearing type and are free from play.

   The capacitor is rotated clockwise by means of the electromagnet 9, mounted on the main frame 8 of the mechanism, which in turn can be mounted on the end plate of the multiple capacitor .

  This magnet 9 attracts the frame 10, which in turn pushes the pawl 11 and disengages it from the rear stop pin 12, engaging it between the teeth of the wheel. ratchet 4. At the end of the movement of the armature, the spring contacts 13 separate and give at the end corresponding to the control station the indication that a step of the rotation of the wheel to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 ratchet driving the capacitor has ended. The associated control relay then releases the magnet 9; the retaining pawl 7 permanently secures the capacitor in its new position and the armature is returned to its original position by the return spring 14.

   The drive pawl 11, at the same time, is lifted out of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 4 as a result of its engagement with the rear stopper 12.

   Similarly, the capacitor is rotated counterclockwise by means of the electro 15, the armature 16, the drive pawl 17, the rear stop 18, the return spring 19 and associated contact springs 20.

   The remote control assembly consists of a similar mechanism, except that the ratchet wheel is mounted on its own bearing 21, fixed to the frame 22 of the assembly and an index 23, fixed to the ratchet wheel 24, moves on the tuning scale 25 and indicates the position of the multiple capacitor controlled by the stepping mechanism of the receiver.

  This scale bears an outer reference graduation divided into one hundred parts, corresponding to the step by step positions of the multiple capacitor, and on the remainder of the dial are marked as many ordinary calibrated receiver scales as there are ranges in the range. 'associated receiver wave change switch.

  The scale itself 25 is rotated in its bearing 26 by means of spring-loaded arms 27, which engages on the cam 28, mounted on the fine tuning control shaft 29.

   By this means, the rotation of the fine tuning control 29, which can be a normal potentiometer or a variable capacitor, as will be seen later, causes the scale 25 to move relative to the index 23, actuated by a step by step mechanism.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

  In this way, the actual tuning positions in any region of a single tuning step can be indicated on the dial.

   Therefore, by means of the step-by-step effect and the slight rotation of the scale itself in one or the other direction, under the action of the fine tuning control, a continuously varying the indication of the position of the remote multiple capacitor over the entire length of the tuning scale '
The two control relays are of the normal telephone type and can be part of a separate unit or of the remote control unit, depending on the need for normal installation.

   The step-by-step control key can be two normal telephone keys, one special key to. four positions, or a special switching device described below, or by any other means established to meet particular operating conditions.

   The remote control assembly described below is provided with (.'an actuation key by means of which the continuously clockwise disagreement in a stepping manner rotates the capacitor " clockwise or in reverse, approximately to the required position. The last or two steps are executed only by means of one or two additional positions of the key in the form of isolated steps, according to the desire of the operator and the Final fine tuning is accomplished by means of the fine tuning command.

  The possibility of fine tuning between the above positions is made realizable by the fact that the retaining pawl of the stepping mechanism of the tuning capacitor of the receiver precisely secures this capacitor in defined positions.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   Fine tuning can be performed over the small frequency band covered by a single step of the multiple capacitor, by varying the frequency of the receiver's local oscillator, in accordance with any of the conventional arrangements such as the effect of Miller, the variation of the operating voltages of the oscillator tube, the transfer of a capacitance across a part of the oscillating circuit of the oscillator, or by any other suitable arrangement. The controlled organ may consist either of a potentiometer or of a variable capacitor, depending on the particular device used, this control being actuated by the fine tuning control axis 29 of FIG. 2.

   The operation of the stepping portion of the control is arranged so that a defined sequence of operations must be performed at both ends of the system to ensure that the dial index and multiple capacitor have corresponding positions throughout their movement.

   The electrical assembly is shown in FIG. 3 and its operation in continuous rotation in the anti-clockwise direction is as follows.

   I - The "continuous rotation" arm of the control key is maneuvered to the left.

   2 - relay 1A is working
3 - the electro IC at the receiver end operates and rotates the tuning capacitor by one step.

   4 - At the end of the armature stroke of the magnet IC, the spring contacts ICI are closed.

   5 - The 1R electro at the control end operates and turns the scale index by one step.

   6 - At the end of the travel of relay 1R, contact 1R1 opens.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   7 - This cquse the release of relay lA which opens its contacts lAl -
8 - the electro 1C of the receiver end then releases and the retaining pawl associated with it precisely centers the capacitor between the two teeth facing it and reopens the contacts HERE -
9 - This causes the 1R remote control electro to release and the associated retaining pawl precisely centers the index of the dial between the two teeth facing it and the 1R1 contacts close again.

   10 - relay 1A operates again and the sequence of operations is repeated for the next step, so that the rotation of the capacitor and the index of the dial continues.

   To stop this continuous rotation, the control key is returned to its central position.

   Contact 1A2 ensures that the circuit is not cut until step 7 above is completed so that releasing the control key at any point in this sequence does not allow no partial operation to occur and result in desynchronization of the capacitor and the scale index.

   The contacts of the remote control mechanism ensure that the multiple capacitor is not rotated beyond its normal stroke and said contacts cut the circuit during operation 6, the last step, so as to ensure that the dial index and the tuning capacitor are always in synchronism with each other.

   Clockwise operation is achieved in a similar fashion by moving the "continuous rotation" arm of the control key to the right.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   One-step operation is performed counterclockwise as follows.

   1 - the "single step arm" control key is moved to the left -
2 - relay 1A works -
3 - the 1C electro at the receiver end operates and turns the capacitor one step -
4 - at the end of the travel of the electro 1C armature, the ICI contacts close -
5 - the 1R electro at the control end operates and turns the scale index by one step -
6 - at the end of the 1R electro stroke, the IRI contacts open.

   7 - the circuit is then kept in this position until the control key is released by hand, which allows it to return to its central position - at this time, the IA relay releases, opening the IAI contacts. -
8 - the receiver electro lC releases and its retaining pawl precisely centers the capacitor between the two teeth facing it and reopens the contacts HERE
9 - this releases the remote control electro IR and its retaining pawl centers the index of the dial exactly between the teeth facing it; the IRI contacts close again, but the IA relay circuit is cut so that the circuit remains in this position, which is its original position.

   The same safeguards against premature release of the control key are provided by contacts IA2 as described above with regard to continuous rotation.

   With such a control system, a large number of combinations;] of normal parts can be used for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 obtain specific actuation possibilities. Thus, Fig. 4 shows a switching control device which can replace the four position control key described above.

   With this arrangement, the stepping mechanisms are controlled by a single knob, carrying an auxiliary index which is mechanically connected to it and all the operator has to do is turn this knob and index to the point of tuning. necessary on the scale which starts the step-by-step mechanism and turns the capacitor and the main index in synchronism with the auxiliary index.

   The remote control mechanism is as described in connection with Fig. 2, except that a contact 50 has been attached to the ratchet wheel 49, said contact establishing the connection with a collector 51, attached to the ratchet wheel 49. The control shaft 52. This collector is made up of two semi-circular plates 53 and 54, separated by a thin insulating blade 55. Two other brushes 56 and 57 complete the circuit passing through the segments of the collector 53 and 54 The ratchet wheel 49 also carries an angled index 58, which passes over the outer edge of the tuning scale 60 and which is visible on the front of the control assembly at its end 59.

   A similar scale 60, capable of rotating slightly, is actuated by a cam 61 on the shaft 62 and fine tuned, as previously described. The auxiliary index 63 is keyed to the main control shaft 52 and, when the control knob 64 is rotated, the manifold 51 and the auxiliary index 63 are rotated together.

   To keep the control button in synchronism with the defined positions of the step-by-step mechanism, said button is automatically centered at the nearest stop position.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 by means of the retaining pawl 65, engaging the toothed wheel 66 which forms part of the assembly of the manifold 51.

   The teeth of this wheel correspond with similar teeth 6, forming part of the main ratchet wheel 49, shown in FIG. 2.

   The operation of the step-by-step mechanism is as already described, except that the control key is replaced by this collector device, the circuit of which is shown in FIG. 5.

   The normal position of the collector is such that the brush 50 rests on the insulating segment 55. When the control knob is turned to the new required position, indicated by the auxiliary index, the assembly of the collector 51 begins to rotate and, if said assembly rotates in a clockwise direction, the brush 50 contacts the segment 54 and a circuit closes from the earth, through the brush 48, the ratchet wheel brush 50, the segment 54 and the brush 57, up to point Y in FIG. 3, which causes the stepping mechanism to operate in this direction. The manifold assembly replaces air.si. the "continuous rotation" arm of the control key.

   The movement of the mechanism then brings the brush 50 to the new position of the insulating segment 55 and the rotation
54 and enters the segment continues until the brush comes out of the sagmentjisolant 55, at the last step of the mechanism. Continuation of movement is prevented by the circuit which ends at point Y is interrupted.

   The main index was then brought in synchronism with the auxiliary index, brought back to its original position by the control knob and the tuning capacitor of the receiver was also brought to the corresponding position. Fine tuning can then be executed by acting on the fine tuning command, as described in connection with figure 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

   The advantages of this collector device are as follows.

   I - the main tuning control is reduced to a single button.

   2 - the control can be visually adjusted to any new tuning point and the operator does not need to wait for the mechanism to drive the capacitor and main index to the new tuning position .

   By adding a number of fixed brushes around the collector system of Figures 4 and 5, it is possible to arrange for operation on certain predetermined frequencies, as well as continuous tuning. The predetermined frequency can be chosen by means of an individual push-button, controlling individual fine tuning members 91, 92, 93, (Fig. 6) particular for each predetermined frequency. The operator can then, individually adjust the fine tuning control for each predetermined frequency, during normal reception, but at the same time he can quickly switch from one frequency to another, which is the main advantage. operation on predetermined frequencies. Such an arrangement is shown in Figure 6.

  With the brushes of predetermined frequencies 80, 81, 82 being spaced around the manifold assembly 88, the appropriate brush is selected by means of pushbuttons 84, 85 and 86. The circuit being closed by the appropriate segment of the manifold and the brush. corresponding to the predetermined frequency being selected by means of a pushbutton, the movement of the mechanism is completed when the ected brush stops on the insulating segment 87.

   When tuning to predetermined frequencies is working, the main index 59 (Figure 4) marks the predetermined frequency chosen, but, of course, it separates from the auxiliary index 63 for manual control. When we return to the continuous chord, by re. release of all the push-button keys, the selector returns

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 at the point indicated by the auxiliary index.

   The complete operating circuit is as follows: earth, one of the three keys 84, 85, 86, the appropriate broom. predetermined frequencies 80, 81, 82 and, depending on the position of the commutator segments 88 and 89, to one of the brushes 90 for energizing the selector mechanism, in the normal manner, through the brushes
56 or 57 of the collector 51. The earth electrode is disconnected from the brush 50 of the switch 51 by the operation of any one of these keys.

   By duplicating the control key or the collector control device, at the receiver end and adding an inverting key, it is possible to arrange that the tuning is done normally at the receiver, but can be transferred to the remote control station by operating a key. command located at this last station. However, the order is subordinate to the operator of the control station and cannot be taken over by the operator of the receiver.

   If, however, it was desired to provide equal possibilities of controlling the receiver, either the receiving station or the control station, a somewhat more complicated device, such as shown in figure 8, could be used. The latter requires use. two additional relays. The control point is decided by the operator who operates? the first its control key and, at the end of the tuning operation, the control can -) be transferred to the other operator, if desired. The operation of the assembly is as follows.

   If the KI control key is operated, the ignition
KlB closes the circuit leading to relay B, which closes contact D2, to earth, through the other contact KIC. The other DI contact of the relay closing the circuit to point Y, triggers normal operation of the control mechanism. If the operator

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 of the receiver then operates its control key K2, this will have no effect, because the "control station operator" control is locked by contact K1C and the control key K12 cannot act on the operation of the receiver. Kl. As a result, this circuit renders one control ineffective when the other control has been operated and, at the same time, it prevents the operation of the second control from interfering with that of the first. However, when K1 is released, K2 can operate and assume tuning control.

   In conclusion, the control system described above, in accordance with a particular embodiment of the invention, makes it possible to combine the high mechanical precision of the step by step system, on a large number of points of the tuning range d a receiver, with the flexibility of an electrical frequency control system on each part of the tuning range covered by one of the steps of the stepping system.

   The advantages of the invention, and of the preferred embodiment described above are as follows.

   I - the connection between the receiver and the remote control station is entirely electric, which eliminates all the difficulties inherent in the mechanical control hose, ie: a) play, b) excessive friction, c) installation difficulties due to the large bend radius and the limited number of admissible bends d) limited range of the control hose.

   2 - the indications of the position of the multiple capacitor are provided with precision at the control station
3 - the electrical step by step circuit is arranged so that the parts of the receiver and the control to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 distance operate in a defined sequence, such that one end of the control cannot be out of synchronism with the other, due to any differences in the operating speed of the component parts.

   4 - the multiple capacitor is positioned precisely by a V-shaped pawl engaging under the action of a spring in a V-shaped gap, provided between the teeth of a wheel mounted directly on the axis of the capacitor, which eliminates any play in the positioning and makes it independent of the adjustment of the actuation electros, which automatically compensates for the effects of the wear of the wheel likely to occur during the normal duration of that -this.

   By means of the collector control device, the auxiliary index can be set immediately to the position necessary for the tuning of the receiver and the stepping mechanism will follow, until it has taken this position.

   6 - if new contacts and an additional collector are added to the control collector assembly, a push-button system can be used to adjust the tuning of the receiver to a number of predetermined frequencies, depending on the number of contact springs used.

   7 - In addition, if we increase the number of potentiometers or variable fine tuning control capacitors which can be selected by the pushbuttons mentioned above, we can obtain an individual fine tuning for each frequency. predetermined. This makes it possible to follow any variation in frequency of the transmitter and, after such an adjustment, one can select any predetermined frequency, by simply operating the appropriate button of the selector.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

   8 - This device also allows the operation in remote control of predetermined frequencies, combined with the operation in variable continuous tuning controlled remotely, a combination that is not usually found in the same device.

   9 - by duplicating the command by key or by collector and by adding reversing command keys, it is possible to transfer the tuning command from one operator to. the other, for example in the event of an accident, or otherwise arrange the controls so that they can also be available at will to one or the other of the two operators.
