<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Automatic relay for oil burners"
The present invention relates to relays for oil burners, with automatic operation for ignition and normal operation.
In the known relays, use is generally made of mechanical devices such as timers, for example, the operation of which leaves something to be desired either because they do not operate when necessary, or because they operate inadvertently.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to provide a relay of simple construction ensuring the automaticity and independence of the devices.

various phases of heating oil boilers.
For this purpose, the relay is characterized in that it comprises two contactors which cooperate with a circuit breaker by simple electrical circuits, the circuit breaker being connected to a resistor to ensure a break in the current in the event of the non-ignition of the. fuel oil.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, one of the so-called starting contactors switches on the circuit breaker and its resistance at the same time as the motor and the ignition device so that the circuit breaker cuts the current. after a certain time in the event of no ignition.
The starter contactor is switched on by a pyrostat with two inverted mercury tubes.
The second switch, called normal operation, is switched on by the same pyrostat with two inverted tubes by simple rotation under the action of heat as soon as the ignition is performed.
The circuits are fitted so that the normal operation switch does not come into action until the ignition and ignition switch ceases to operate.
In order to make the invention fully understood, an exemplary embodiment will be given below, shown schematically in the figure of the appended drawing.
In this figure the current arrives at terminals 1,2,3 of contactor 4 for normal operation. From terminal 1 leaves a conductor 5 connected to the winding of an electromagnet 6 from where it goes to a mercury tube 7 of a pyrostat 8 of the chimney and where it is interrupted. Of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
this same terminal 1 leaves a conductor 9 to terminal 10 of the starting and ignition switch 11, while terminals 2 and 3 leave two conductors 12 and 13 respectively to terminals 14 and 15 of contactor 11. At terminals 2 and 3 of contactor 4 are respectively fixed rods 16 and 17 intended to make contact respectively with bars 18 and 19 secured by means of a plate 20 of the core of the electromagnet 6; these bars 18 and 19 corresponding respectively to the rods 21 and 22, respectively secured to the terminals 23 and 24.
From these terminals 23 and 24 leave two conductors 25 and 26 towards a motor 27 which is connected by a conductor 28 to terminal 1.
On the other hand from terminal 10 leaves a conductor 29 connected to the winding of the electromagnet 30 of the starting and ignition switch, from which it comes out to go to a circuit breaker 31, and end in a node 32.
From this same terminal 10 also leaves a conductor 33 which will be connected to one end of a resistor 34, the other end of which is connected to a conductor 35 which terminates at node 32. From this node 32, a conductor 36 is connected. directs towards the second mercury tube 37 of the pyrostat 8, where it is interrupted.
To terminals 10, 14 and 15 of the starting and ignition switch 11 are respectively fixed rods 38, 39 and 40 intended to come into contact respectively with bars 41, 42 and 43 secured by means of a plate 44 of the core of the electromagnet 30.
These bars correspond respectively to rods 45, 46 and 47 fixed to terminals 48, 49 and 50 of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
this switch 11.
Terminals 48 and 49 leave two conductors 51 and 52 which go to a transformer 53 to which is connected the ignition spark device 54 of the burner while at terminals 49 and 50 are connected two conductors 55 and 56 which terminate at terminals 23 and 24 of switch 4 for normal operation.
Into the mercury tubes 7 and 37 of the pyrostat 8 enter two wires 57 and 58 connected to a node 59 on a conductor 60 which goes to the mercury tube 61 of the thermostat 62 located on the boiler and where it is interrupted.
From the tube 61 finally leaves a conductor 63 which ends in an apartment thermostat 64.
The tubes. mercury 7 and 37 are arranged in the opposite direction so that when one of them establishes contact, the other cuts it.
The device thus constructed operates in the following manner.
For ignition, the chimney being cold, the mercury tubes of the pyrostat 8 perform the function shown in the figure. The mercury from tube 37 turns on the contactors 11, resistor 34, motor 27, transformer 51 and spark ignition device 52, while mercury tube 7 turns off the circuit. switch 4.
The current arriving at terminals 1, 2 and 3 goes to terminals 10, 14 and 15; from terminal 10, the current is divided: a part necessarily passes through conductor 33, resistor 34 and con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ductor 35 to node 32; the other part runs through conductor 29, enters the winding of electromagnet 30, from where it exits through conductor 30 'to pass through circuit breaker 31 and arrive at node 32; the two partial currents, united at 32, flow through the conductor 36 which ends in the mercury tube 37. The winding of the electromagnet being traversed by a current, the core enters the coil and by this movement establishes the contacts between the bars 41, 42, 43 with the rods 38, 30 and 40 on the one hand and the rods 45, 46 and 47 on the other hand.
Current is therefore established from terminal 10 to terminal 48, from terminal 14 to terminal 49 and from terminal 15 to terminal 50.
The current coming from the terminals 48 and 49 goes through the conductors 51 and 52 towards this transformer 53 and to the ignition device 54 while the current coming from the terminals 49 and 50 goes through the conductors 55 and 56 towards the terminals 23 and 24 from where the conductors 25 and 26 bring it to the engine 27. The engine starts to run and sends the fuel oil into the boiler, at the same time as ignition occurs. A pilot light indicates that the contactor is in service.
If ignition does not occur, the current flowing through conductor 33 and resistor 34, actuates circuit breaker 31 which cuts off the current in the coil of the electromagnet; therefore, the core falling and cutting off the communication between the bars and the rods of the contactor 11, the motor circuit is interrupted and the latter stops; the flow of fuel oil into the boiler stops.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
If ignition occurs, the fuel oil burns and the ignition spark no longer occurs. But this start of combustion produces hot gases in the chimney.
Thanks to this heat, the pyrostat turns and assumes the so-called hot contact position; mercury tubes occupy a position such that the mercury of the tube 37 aban gives the conductor 36 and 58, which switches off the contactor 11, while the mercury of the mercury tube 7 puts in communication the conductors 5 'and 57 , which switches on contactor 4.
From this moment, the current on terminal 1 flows through conductor 5 which leads it into the coil of electromagnet 6; leaving this winding, the current travels through the conductor 5 'which leads it to the tube 7 where the mercury passes it into the conductor 57. The coil of the electromagnet being traversed by a current, the core penetrates in the coil and by this movement establishes the contacts between the bars 18 and 19 with on the one hand the rods 16 and 17, and on the other hand with the rods 21 and 22. As a result, the current is established from terminal 2 to terminal 23 and from terminal 3 to terminal 24. From terminals 23 and 24, current flows through conductors 25 and 26 and arrives at motor 27. A neutral wire 28 connects this to terminal 1. The normal regime is thus established.
The mercury tube 61 of the boiler thermostat 61 'occupies the position where it is drawn when the boiler temperature drops to a minimum; at this time, the pyrostat is in the so-called cold position, and the ignition circuit is closed.
If, on the contrary, the boiler temperature reaches its maximum, the boiler thermostat turns
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
at a certain angle and with it the mercury tube 61, so that the mercury withdraws from the wires 61 and 62 and the circuit is cut; the boiler is not fueled by fuel oil.
An indicator lamp can be connected with the circuit of contactor 11 and another with the circuit of contactor 4.
The boiler thermostat can be attached in series with it an apartment thermostat, the temperature of which it will take and, according to needs, stop the burner or put it back into service.
