<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Mixer.
This invention relates to a mixer d.estined to ensure the desired temperature conditions of the magmas and massecuites before. centrifugation in the manufacture of sugar and other similar products and relates more particularly to a mixer comprising an improved heat-transmitting and agitating element mounted in the mixing tank so as to be able to turn therein, by means of an improved support and sealing device .
In the manufacture of sugar it has been found to be desirable, as disclosed in Stevens U.S. Patent No. 2,086,951., To provide heat to the massecuite under carefully controlled conditions as it passes through the turbines or centrifugal devices so as to reduce the viscosity of the material and maintain it uniform when it is admitted into the tubines, which has. the effect of promoting the centrifugation operation. ''
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Mixers of the known type are expensive and difficult to install and maintain efficient due to the construction and mounting of the heat transmitting and agitating elements.
The shaft of the conventional mixer is subjected to violent loads which tend to make it bend which has the effect of reducing the life of the bearings and of the mixer. To reduce this wear to a minimum, it was necessary to establish internal support bearings, inside the mixing tank between the bearings located at the ends of the agitator-heat transmitter element ;, except in installations of abnormally short length. When three or more bearings are used, the shaft will deform if the bearings are not exactly in alignment and thus cause detrimental forces in the device.
The load on the mixer supports also changes depending on the amount of sugar in the mixer and, if the foundation is not of uniform strength, the mixer may sag irregularly when this occurs and is used. three or more bearings, the shaft may deform due to the resulting misalignment of the bearings.
The end bearings in a conventional type mixer are subjected or exposed to the anchor yes is in it as well as the intermediate bearings, which gives rise to excessive wear of all the bearings.In addition, the intermediate bearings or internal, inside the tank interrupt the coils of the heat transmitting and agitating element and thus reduce the effective dimensions thereof.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a mixer having an easily installed heat transfer and agitator element, the support bearings of which have a long life, and where the need for internal bearings is avoided in many cases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Another object of the invention is to create an arrangement where there are no bearings to be placed exactly in the same alignment and where the bending or the change in length of the shaft as a result of temperature variations does not. does not damage the device.
According to this invention, it is not essential that the bearings are in exactly the same alignment as the axis of the mixer shaft. Further, as described herein, the alignment is not altered when the end walls of the mixer tilt one way or the other due to varying sugar loads, or when the shaft deviates transversely or otherwise from an end wall. By using the embodiment according to the. In the present invention, the accuracy of the alignment of the flanges of the system to which the shaft belongs also becomes less important.
In the method of construction of the mixer according to the invention, a rotary mixing coil system comprising a strong support shaft to which heat transmitting and agitating coils are attached is maintained at two suitably spaced points, at its opposite ends, in vertically fixed positions, near the planes of the adjacent end walls of a mixing tank intended to contain the massecuite which is to be conditioned for processing in the turbine.
This method of supporting the shaft is completed by support and sealing devices which allow the rotary group to receive an angular movement (lateral deviation) and / or an axial movement (longitudinal) with respect to the walls of the tank between the vertically fixed points as a result of variations in load, torsion, temperature, or other forces producing deformations or sagging encountered in the use of the apparatus. At the same time, the walls are kept completely airtight, as necessary.
Therefore, advanced mixers can
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Yet another object of the invention is to provide an elongated heat transfer coil which provides a substantially uniform temperature to the massecuite along the entire length of the mixer with increased heating efficiency.
These aims, characteristics and advantages of the invention. and still others will become apparent from the detailed description below of its preferred embodiment which is given by way of example only.

In fig.l, the mixing tank 10 is provided near its bottom with a shaft 11 which extends from one end to the other. This shaft has sufficient dimensions to effectively fulfill the functions of an exchanger element. as well as a support for a heat exchanger coil 12 and also serves as a conduit for the passage of a heat transmitting medium to and from the coil.
The tank itself can take any shape that is convonpble in cross section, such as a trough profile, or can have a U or V section, U.S. Patents Nos. 2,086,951 and Roberts 2,128,873 giving examples of mixtures to which the present invention can be applied.

creates a leaktight seal between the interior of the mixing tank and the exterior by pushing back the gasket 49 in the desired conditions to ensure the och0it0. with the surrounding rooms.
In the case where the shaft 11 tends to flex or
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
present a lateral deflection, the retaining ring 51 of the stuffed boot remains applied to the face 57 of the collar 54, sufficient clearance being left between the outer cylindrical surface of the retaining ring 51 and the inner cylindrical surface of the fixed nozzle 53 to allow the retaining ring 51 ', * to incline relative to the inner wall of the nozzle 53. The clearance 48a between the movable part 48 of the stuffing box and the inner cylindrical surface of the nozzle 53 allows a similar movement of the moving part 48.
Thus, the retaining ring 51 of the stuffing box and the movable part 48 can perform an angular movement with respect to the end wall of the reservoir when the shaft deflects laterally, so as to keep the retaining ring 51 in contact. with the face 57 of the collar 54. If the length of the shaft changes and therefore the collar 54 moves longitudinally with respect to the plane of the end wall of the mixing tank, the spring 41 still operates the movable part 48 for compressing the sealing rings 49 on the retaining ring 51, the latter in turn being maintained in contact with the face 57 of the collar 54.
In this way, the self-aligning shaft seal maintains a hermetic seal between the interior of the mixing tank and the exterior, despite lateral deformation or deflection and / or longitudinal displacement. of the tree.
Instead of the rollers 64 in fig. 2 a type of self-aligning roller bearing can also be used, as shown in fig. 4, the same reference numbers indicating the parts in this figure which are similar to those of 13 fig. 2.
The guide ring 36 carries the outer raceway 81, which has a spherical surface for guiding rollers 82 arranged obliquely. The internal raceway 83 is mounted on the extension 30 of the shaft and a cage can be used. conventional type 84. It is obvious that the bearing
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The self-aligning roller in fig.4 tends to minimize the so-called bending forces of the shaft ;, because the bearing automatically adjusts to compensate for the lateral deflection of the shaft.
The bearing 21 at the opposite end of the shaft (fig. 3) can be a self-aligning type hermetic bearing. It has two conical bearing surfaces of opposite inclinations 60 and 61, formed respectively on parts of a fixed box comprising a mounting plate 59 and a cap 62.
The mounting plate 59 which has the surface 60 shown in Fig. 3 is secured to the extract wall of the mixing tank by bolts 65. The cone-shaped bushing 61 may be integrally formed with the mixing cap. closure 62 yes is fixed by means of bolts 63 to the plate 59. The bush sleeve 66 which surrounds and supports the journal 74 of the shaft 11 so as to allow rotation, has spherical shaped surfaces 67 and 68 set to match their tapered surfaces 60 and 61. Sleeve 66 can be prevented from rotating by a pin 68 'which engages a groove 69 in plate 59.
The pad can be adjusted by allowing it longitudinal play and by clamping it in place by the use of furring strips 70 'between the face 70 of the closure cap 62 and the face 71 of the plate 59 in a well known manner. A lubrication passage 72 communicates with a groove 73 formed in the journal 74 and can receive lubricant which is supplied thereto by a pipe 75. The journal 74 may be provided with a flange 76 which is welded thereto and is disposed in such a manner. to povvoir be fixed by bolts 77 to a flange 78 of the hollow shaft 11. The end turn 79 of the coil 12 communicates through an opening 80 with the interior 28 of the hollow shaft II-.
In the event that the shaft 11 tends to flex between the bearing 21 and the bearing of the opposite end, the tapered surfaces of the bearing 21 together with the spherical surfaces of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
bearing sleeve allow the bearing to align automatically, a hermetic seal being maintained in substance and massecuite or other liquid thus being prevented from reaching. running surfaces.
If desired, the bearing 21 can be supported inside the mixer on supports 85 (fig. 5)
In short, the rotating mixer coil system comprising a strong supporting shaft 11 and its agitator and heat transmitting coils 12 is held at two suitably spaced points by bearings placed at its opposite ends in vertically fixed positions close to the planes of the adjacent end walls of the mixing tank
10.
This method of supporting the shaft is completed by the support and sealing devices, as shown at 13 and 21, which allow the rotary system to perform an angular movement (lateral deflection) and / or axial (longitudinal) with respect to the walls of the tank between these vertically fixed points, and, at the same time, the par.rois ends are maintained in conditions of complete sealing. As a result, the improved mixers can be constructed and used without the need to keep the axis of the rotary system shaft in a straight line or to resort to internal bearings.
An example of the use of two mixers 86 and 87 mounted end to end is shown in fig. 5 where a battery of six turbines is served by ducts 88, the massecuite being brought into these mixers from a vacuum tank or another device in a well-known manner. These mixers 86 and 87 are similar to the mixers of FIGS. 1 and 4 except that the pad 21 is supported within the mixing tank 10, although it is evident that mixers constructed according to Figs. 1 and 4 could advantageously be arranged end to end or otherwise.

maintain the mass, and therefore the lower temperature of the bulb 100 has the effect of causing the regulator 89 to deliver a sufficient quantity of air in the line 103 to open the steam valve and supply more steam to the heater water The thermostatic bulb 101 acts when the temperature in the latter rises above a predetermined value to cause the operation of the relay, 102 and prevent the admission of more steam into the tank of water.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the relay 102, when actuated by the bulb 101 due to too high a temperature in the water tank, discharges the air line 104 into the water tank. atmosphere and thereby reduces the pressure of the control air on the membrane of the steam valve 91 to shut off the supply of steam to the water heater tank.
In the implementation of the invention, shafts of large dimensions can be used, so as to obtain a larger heating surface and better characteristics of speed and flow rate of the heat transmitting agent when it circulates inside. of the tree and in the coils. This helps to maintain a substantially uniform temperature throughout the length of the mixer.
The absence of internal supports or bearings eliminates the need to interrupt the coil, so that the active surface can be increased in the coils themselves.
Of course, modifications can be made to the construction details without departing from the invention.
