 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  , Improvements to. manufacture of dummies.

   This invention relates to the production of dummies by treating unsaturated fats and fatty oils with sulfur.

   The well-known reaction between sulfur on the one hand and unsaturated fats and fatty oils on the other hand normally proceeds quite slowly at temperatures of 160 C. and above.

  The material known commercially as brown dummy, rubber substitute, or brown substitute is made by this reaction and is a dark brown sprayable solid which imparts certain desirable characteristics to vulcanized rubber compositions, but which in turn is at the same time, appreciably decreases their elastic limit in traction and their elongation at break and can increase their modulus.

   The aim of the present invention is to provide a satisfactory and efficient process which makes it possible to overcome the above defects.

 tees above by modifying the manufacturing process $ É4lÉhgces.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The invention comprises incorporating a relatively small proportion of iodine, for example from 0.05 percent to 2.0 percent, into the usual reaction mixture of fatty or fatty oils and sulfur from which to produce. the dummy by heating.

   The introduction of the low proportion of iodine allows the reaction to take place at temperatures appreciably lower than those normally employed, producing new results. Iodine can be used in conjunction with the accelerators described in English Patent No. 462992 of the Applicant Company further reducing the reaction time and therefore achieving economy.

   The present invention makes it possible to achieve savings in heating, driving force, time and manpower and this as a result of the powerful accelerating effect of iodine on the reaction. In addition, dummies are obtained which give, to the compositions which contain them, an increased tensile limit and elongation at break compared to the compositions containing the standard brown dummies. On the other hand, we thus obtain dummies containing less sulfur in the free state.

   The manner of putting the invention into practice is described below with reference to some specific examples.

  EXAMPLE 1.

   The reactive mixture:
Refined rapeseed oil ............... 100 parts
Sulfur ................................. 25 parts
Iodine ................................... 1 part is heated from room temperature to 160 C. and maintained at this temperature, stirring continuously until frozen (30 minutes). The reaction is characterized by its regularity, speed, chemical efficiency, and sharp end when compared to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 uncatalyzed reaction. The result is a dark brown rubbery mass containing 1.9 percent free sulfur (an uncatalyzed reaction contains 4.1 percent free sulfur).

   A rubber blend containing the new material exhibits lower modulus as well as unchanged tensile yield strength and elongation at break compared to a rubber blend containing the standard product resulting from the uncatalyzed reaction.

  EXAMPLE 2.

   The reaction mixture of Example 1 is heated at 140 ° C. until gelation (4 hours). The resulting sticky and almost black product is compounded into the base mix shown in the following table, which shows the tensile yield strength and elongation given by this product compared to the standard brown dummy.

 is maintained at around 160 ° C. until the freezing point, reached after 105 minutes. After slow cooling the result is a firm, dark-colored dummy containing 0.3% free sulfur.
