<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Process for the preparation of unsaturated aldehydes and carboxylic acids and of intermediates obtained in this preparation".
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of unsaturated aldehydes and carboxylic acids and of intermediates obtained in this preparation. The method consists in reacting carbonyl compounds or functional derivatives thereof with oxaloacetic acid or functional derivatives thereof, after which the resulting condensation products are efficiently broken down, if desired.
The reaction according to which the mentioned condensation products are prepared can be represented by the following scheme:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
where RÚ = an optionally substituted hydrocarbon residue,
Rê = hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical, also optionally substituted.
This reaction had not yet been described in the literature.
Instead of carbonyl compounds, it is also possible to react functional derivatives thereof, for example an acetal or a semicarbazone, with oxaloacetic acid, it being necessary to select conditions under which the carbonyl compound itself can be formed from the functional derivative. One then works, as it were, with a carbonyl compound in statu nascendi; the character of the invention is not changed here.
The oxaloacetic acid can also be reacted in the form of a functional derivative, for example an ester, the acid amide, the acid anhydride. Instead of condensation products of the general formula I, compounds will usually be obtained in which the right-hand half of the molecule is still present in the form of the functional derivative.
A functional derivative of oxaloacetic acid, which is particularly suitable for carrying out the present process, is the internal anhydride.

The process according to the invention thus makes it possible, inter alia, to prepare unsaturated aldehydes of the general formula III or unsaturated acids of the general formula IV in a simple manner, starting from ketones having two carbon atoms less. Some of the unsaturated aldehydes obtainable according to the invention have already been prepared earlier by other, more elaborate ways, while many new unsaturated aldehydes hitherto not described in the literature can also be prepared according to the invention.
Thus, starting from acetophenone, the ss-methylcinnamic aldehyde not yet described in the literature is obtained.

Example 1 PREPARATION OF HYPNYLIDEOXALACETIC ACID
EMI6.1
62 g of the pyridine salt of oxymaleic acid anhydride are suspended in a mixture of 124 ml of anhydrous glacial acetic acid and 36 ml of acetophehon, and then 11.5 g of hydrochloric acid gas are introduced. The salt dissolves completely.
It is left closed at room temperature for 8 days and then poured into 1/2 L water. The oil which separates out is taken up in ether. The ether layer is shaken (optionally while cooling) several times with sodium hydroxide solution until no more color penetrates the caustic layer (A), then washed with water and dried over sodium sulfate. When the ether is evaporated, the unchanged part of the acetophenone is recovered (+ 20 g). Sometimes this contains some acid again after standing for some time. A small amount of the anhydride of hypnylidene oxalacetic acid is presumably present, which slowly hydrolyzes to the acid. At least some more hypnylidene oxaloacetic acid can then be recovered by extracting with alkali and acidifying the extract.
The alkaline extracts A of the crude reaction product are acidified with cooling and shaken out with ether. The aetheric extract is washed thoroughly with water (at least 5x) to remove acetic acid, then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and gently evaporated on a steam bath. The residue should not be overheated (otherwise CO2 cleavage,) The residue is allowed to stand at room temperature. Soon a crystalline mass of hypnylideneoxalacetic acid begins to form. After 1 or 2 days, it is stirred with a mixture of equal parts of dry ether and petroleum ether, filtered with suction and the same mixture cooled to zero is washed. Yield 6-8.8 g of colorless crystals.

This substance can be prepared by heating hypnylidene oxaloacetic acid with aniline on a water bath or similarly from hypnyidene pyruvic acid. The mother liquor is mixed with 10 ml of distilled aniline and heated in a dish on a steam bath. CO2 splits off. When gas evolution has almost ended (after 10 minutes), it is cooled, ether added and extracted with 2N sodium hydroxide solution (2 x 50 cm3). The etheric solution is then washed with water until no more color is absorbed into the water, and then twice with 25 cm3 of N hydrochloric acid. After neutral washing with water and drying, the ether is carefully evaporated. The residue, a red oil, gradually crystallizes completely through; can take days. After complete crystallization, it is stirred with a mixture of 55% aether and 45% petroleum ether and rinsed with it. Colorless crystals. Mp 80 C yield 3-6 g.
Recrystallization can be done by dissolving in a little methanol and adding a little water, or from ligrotne. M.p. after recrystallization twice 84.5-85.5 C (c.).
It is remarkable that the anil, although it has a carboxyl group, does not dissolve in 2 n lye.
In preparing the anil from piston hypnylidene pyruvic acid, a modification with mp 96-97 C (c.) Is obtained. By rubbing an amount of the above modification m.p. 84.5-85.5 C with a small crystal m.p.

550 mg of the anil obtained according to Example 6 is heated in 2 ml of quinoline in an oil bath. At 150, the gas evolution becomes so rapid that a further increase in temperature is unnecessary. After 15 minutes, 37 ml of CO 2 has been cleaved (theor. 36 ml). The color of the mixture is very dark. After rapid cooling, ether is added and shaken 3x with 2N hydrochloric acid to remove quinoline, etc. It is then washed twice with water and evaporated. This residue is a red non-crystalline oil. This is taken up in some alcohol and steamed with 1N sulfuric acid. Droplets of a pleasant, soft, Jonon-smelling oil are deposited in the distillate.
A solution of 1 g hydrochloric acid semicarbazide and 1 g sodium acetate in water is now added and then enough alcohol that everything dissolves at boiling heat.
The total volume is # 75 cm3. The solution is stored in the refrigerator. After 1 night crystals of the semicabra sun of ss-ionylideneacetaldehyde have deposited (warts). These are filtered off with suction (100 mg) and recrystallized 1x from methanol.
