<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Lethal props for mining operations".
We know of metal mining props in several parts, the interior prop element of which is retained, with the possibility of yielding, by an enclosure or a lock frame applying to the exterior prop element. Between the inner prop element and the lock frame is inserted a wedging piece which is driven, when the prop is shortened, in the axial direction under the effect of the frictional contact in order to produce , by the work of deformation, a horizontal force which tightens the inner and outer prop against each other.
In these known props operating according to the so-called "Servo" principle, the deformation caused by the horizontal force consists of a plastic deformation of the crushing woods arranged inside the frame or of the lock enclosure and, optionally, of this if the timber is not sufficiently dimensioned. The consequence is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that the magnitude of the horizontal forces cannot be determined with precision and that these forces decrease rapidly in the event that no further deformation occurs.
Since the props always remain under load for several days, and the tightening decreases in the lock over time more and more, due to the plastic deformation as the thrust of the ground increases, there is the risk of see all the props of a logging site suddenly give way.
According to the present invention these drawbacks are avoided by causing the production of the horizontal force by the elastic deformation of the lock elements. It is therefore necessary to choose and limit the distance which is traveled by the driven jamming part and which causes the deformation necessary to produce the horizontal force, so that the force to which the lock elements are subjected does not exceed the limit of elastic deformation. In this way one is able to determine the horizontal force necessary for the bearing force of the prop with sufficient precision, and it will also retain the importance that it / it reaches, in the case considered even when, as by the The use of internal prop elements with parallel surfaces means that no further deformation takes place.
The elastic deformation can be of interest; to a large extent, the lock frame or also bodies inserted in the lock. Preferably, the lock frame is given such an arrangement on the outer prop and is composed of compression and tension elements so that they can easily be changed if the equipment gets tired over time or should have other elements. dimensions for another load-bearing capacity. The detached arrangement also has the advantage of allowing the use of equipment

very high stretch limit, which is not possible with lock frames welded to the props. To prevent the elasticity from decreasing during loading, the inner strut member can be formed into a low slope wedge shape or a low taper shape.
The deformation due to the wedge-shaped or conical shape must also be kept exclusively within the elastic limit.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Figures 1 to 3 show the prop at different mounting heights.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section, of the prop of Figure 1 on a larger scale.
Fig. 5 is a graph showing the variation in strut shortening as a function of pressure.
The steel strut consists of the outer strut element 1 and the inner strut element 2, these two elements being clamped and held against each other by a rotating clamping yoke. Both the outer and the inner strut element are made of a U-bar, these sections being guided one inside the other. In the direction transverse to the longitudinal axis, the inner sealing element carries grooves or grooves which help to increase the friction. The clamping bracket is formed by the pair of fish plates 8 joined at the ends by the distance bolts 4 and 9. The distance bolt 4 is retained in its working position by the lever 6 which rotates around the pivot 7 .
On the distance bolt is arranged the jam shoe 10 so as to be able to turn. The distance bolt 4 is, at both ends, housed in loops 3 fixed to the outer strut member 1, and at the same time serving to suspend the clamping bracket. 'A special friction lining 11 is interposed between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ribbed surface of the internal prop element 2, and the wedging shoe 10. The external prop element 1 carries, below the wedging shoe 10, a support or cleat 12.
As the inner strut member 2 descends, the friction lining piece 11 and the wedging shoe 10 are driven, the wedging stirrup (enclosure or lock frame) assuming an increasingly skewed position. This rotating movement of the lock frame is accompanied by deformation work which lengthens the lock frame when the friction lining 11 and the wedging piece 10 are compressed. After having traveled a deter- mined path. mined, the wedging piece 10 rests on the support or the cleat 12. At this moment the deformation work or the production of the elastic force in the lock ends, and the prop element interior 2 with parallel surfaces may yield under a load which does not change.
The distance traveled by the wedging part 10 depends on the deformability of the parts of the lock, which deformability, for its part, is properly adapted to the desired maximum load of prop. In accordance with the spirit of the invention, the distance to be traveled by the wedging piece 10 to its support or cleat 12 will be chosen so as to ensure that the force of the lock pieces does not exceed the limit of the deformation. - elastic mability.
If the elastic force (horizontal force) decreases, for example, as a result of the wear of the friction linings 11 and as a result of variations in the dimensions between the friction surfaces of the inner strut member 2, it is possible compensate for it by giving the inner prop element 2 a slightly conical shape (shape of an elongated wedge).
The prop is loosened by a hammer blow against the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lever 6 so that it is turned to the side. Under the load of pressure the bolt 4 yields downwards and the wedging piece 10 is released from the inner strut 2.
Figure 5 shows the load diagrams (pressure curves: descent) of props of different construction methods.
Curve a, in solid lines, represents the shape for a prop in which a movable body is moved laterally against an elastic force as a result of the conical shape of the inner prop member and produces a horizontal force who constantly believes.
Curves b, c and d relate to mine props with a so-called "Servo" effect, curves b and c relating to props with an internal prop element with parallel surfaces. As can be seen from curve b, the deformation manifests itself in the jamming lock by an elastic deformation. At the end of the deformation the load decreases because of the release of the tension.
Curve c indicates how the strut which is the object of the present invention operates at elastic deformation, while curve d indicates the operation of the same strut with an internal strut member having a slightly conical shape.
