<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Apparatus for indicating the penetration of an object in a magnetic field, or a variation of this object.
The present invention refers to apparatus indicating the penetration of an object into a magnetic field or a variation of such an object. The apparatus comprises a high frequency electron tube generator, and an oscillator circuit connected to the antenna. It is therefore the capacitance between the antenna and the earth which varies when the object varies. The indicating device in such apparatus usually consists of a relay connected in such a way that

that a change occurs in the current through its winding when the circuit is Influenced, for example, when its frequency or amplitude of oscillation is changed. a very important field of application of such devices is constituted by the protection against theft and especially by the indication of burglaries.
Heretofore, however, no apparatus of practical use had been realized. This is due to the lack of stability of the devices.
In alarm or guard devices which have to function from day to day without care in an absolutely safe manner, it is essential that they be stable, that is to say practically independent of variations in temperature or network.
According to the present invention, this stability problem has been solved by an oscillator circuit, included in the high frequency generator. electron tube, connected in the usual way between the grid and another electrode, preferably the cathode of an electron tube. According to the invention the coupling elements on the grid side of the circuit are arranged so that their resulting capacitance is generally constant with normal temperature variations and the impedance between the earth side of the circuit and the earth. is small in comparison with the impedance between said earth side and the network.
The way in which the two sides of the oscillator circuit should be connected in order to obtain full stability will be explained at greater length with reference to the accompanying figure which shows an exemplary embodiment of the invention.

at three points of known type. The antenna A is connected to the grid circuit of the tube, by the capacitor C1 and the resistor R, to function as a seeker. In the plate circuit of the tube, a relay R, adjustable in its limit position, is connected to function as an indicating device. The apparatus is supplied by an AC network V by the transformer T, a rectifier L and a filter capacitor 04.
The given diagram of the apparatus, is in principle known, it works in such a way that when an increase in the capacitance of the antenna 03 occurs, for example, when an object enters the field of the antenna , the high frequency voltage between the grid and the cathode of the tube is shunted so that, thanks to the high resistance R1, a decrease in the high frequency amplitude occurs. As a result, the anode current through the tube is reduced so that the relay, which has an adjustable limit position, operates. If the relay is adjusted to the middle position, it naturally works for a decrease in the anode current i.e. a decrease of 03.
As will be explained in greater detail in the following, according to the invention, the coupling elements connected to the circuit C, as well as the circuit itself, must be arranged in a special way if the apparatus is to be stable. The grid side will be considered first.
A good instrument will give an indication of a change of 0.1 pf or less in 03, preferably 0.01 pf.
It should follow from the diagram that if the capacitance between the grid of the tube and the cathode or the grid and anode changes, there will be almost the same change in current in the anode circuit of the tube as if a variation in capacity
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
produced between the antenna and the earth. For normal temperature variations (¯ 20 C), such a change in capacitance is normal in electron tubes. Therefore, the electron tube must be specially constructed for the intended application. A first precaution to take is to build the tubes with the least possible capacity between the grid and the anode and the grid and the cathode. This is achieved by, among other things, the direct exit through the tube wall of the grid terminal with the shortest possible connections.
These should not be parallel to the connections of the other electrodes. In addition, the electrodes in the tube should be secured by a material having a small coefficient of thermal expansion such as, for example, steatite or the like. Special care should also be taken regarding the connection between the grid and the antenna just as well as the antenna itself, so that a stable capacitance is produced in the grid side of the circuit which will not be variable for changes in temperature or humidity. All of this naturally also concerns the oscillator circuit itself. A compensation device can also be used.
In the event of temperature changes, there should be such changes in capacitance that changes in capacitance in other elements connected to the grid circuit are compensated for.
Such a compensation device can be implemented, for example, by means of a capacitor C1, which, in the usual way, is constructed so that its capacitance varies with temperature, or by giving the relay R an input. opposite bearing, connected in series with resistor R de-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
during the temperature, the winding being thus supplied by the rectifier. The insulating material has a dielectric constant which rises with an increase in temperature, while the capacitor C1 decreases with an increase. temperature and the value of the aforesaid resistance also decreases with an increase in temperature.
Regarding the earth side of the circuit, it is necessary that the impedance Zl of the element, pure example, the earth coupling capacitor which forms the capacitor C3, together with the antenna, has a small impedance. Since the distance between device ground J2 and antenna ground J1 can usually be short, a suitably small and stable impedance can also be obtained for this connection. On the other hand, the impedance between the earth side of the circuit and the network must be large for high frequencies. This is due to the fact that the impedance of the network to earth J3 can vary considerably, and thereby the resulting influence that the network earth exerts on Z1 through Z3 can vary, which in turn influences the circuit. LC and occasion do wrong indications.
In this case Z3 includes partly the impedance of the device and partly the impedance of the network to earth. The way in which the impedance of the network can be varied can be clearly understood in the figure. It is assumed that the network connections have a certain length, this is the case for example with overhead pipes, so that the impedance Z3 can be arranged in series with these connections. If therefore a load B2, of relatively high capacitance C2, is connected to the earth, the impedance is naturally reduced between the network side of the device and the earth, which means that! It is more
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
shunted stage.
When the device is connected to the grid by a transformer having electrically separate primary and secondary windings, or even a screen connected to earth between the windings, a fairly high impedance is produced between the two windings. In the case of alternating current or direct current devices, a suitable impedance must be connected between the device and the network. This can be of the anti-parasite type. In order to obtain a strong enough impedance, it is necessary to connect several anti-interference filters to it, possibly with their capacitors.
What has been said above will be better understood by an example of an alternating current apparatus. Suppose 03 is 50 pf. The sensitivity of the device, i.e. the variation of 03 under the influence of the relay is 0.01 pf or 2.10: 4 of C3.1 is a capacitor of .uuU pf. The example shows that the same variation in the circuit as under the influence of the relay (U.Ul pf) can be obtained if 21 varies by approximately 0.75 mf and a variation of the impedance Z2 between, for example, infinity and 50,000 chms can also cause this variation in Z1. It follows therefore that a filter of high efficiency should be connected between the network side of the apparatus and the network, and that Z1 should be chosen as low as possible.
The usual value of Zl (C = 5.uOü pf) is usually too small and should be increased at least ten times *
By connecting the transformer between the device and the network, an electrical separation of the device from the network is obtained in the known manner. For this reason the LC circuit can be connected directly to the earth pipe J2, which in turn, by means of a pipe with
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
low impedance, is extended to the earth Jl of the antenna, whereby a connection is obtained between the earths J2 and Jl with a resistance so low that the capacitance 05 of the transformer T, that one must be able to maintain at around 100 pf or even lower, constitutes sufficient decoupling between the network and the device.
In some circumstances, the impedance between the earth side of the circuit and the network should be 100 times greater than the impedance between the same side of the circuit and earth.
