On débrayera.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  .CLUTCH CONTROL DEVICE FOR MOTOR VEHICLES.

   This patent relates to various modifications and improvements made to the clutch control device for motor vehicles which has been described and placed under the protection of main patent No. 495,719 of May 13, 1950 and by the related improvement patent No. 497,015 of 15 July 1950. '
These improvements will be described below purely by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

   In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings and as in the main patent, the numeral 10 denotes the distributor cylinder and 27 the solenoid surrounding one end of this cylinder.

   In this cylinder can move a piston formed of two parts: a part 16 located on the left in the figure shown and with gentle friction with respect to the wall which surrounds it and a part 16 ', located on the right. with some tolerance. Part 16 is for example made of copper so as not to be subject to magnetization and not to retain metal particles which could block it and part 16 'is made of soft iron and is subjected to the attraction of the solenoid. A return spring 231 is interposed between part 16 'of piston 16 and a locking nut 181 which is screwed into one end of the cylinder.

   . At 12 is the projection with duct 13 serving to place the inside of cylinder 10 in communication with the engine intake pipe, at 14 is the projection with duct 15 to which the connecting pipe with the bellows is connected or another actuator of the clutch plate; in 25 the air intake duct with adjustment needle 26.

   As provided for in the improvement patent of July 15, 1950, means are provided which allow rapid operation of the clutch during its dead travel and very progressive as soon as the plates and dis-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 ques begin to make contact, but in accordance with current development the variations in the re-entry of air are determined by the movements and by the mechanical control of the piston itself and of the distributor.

   The cylinder 10 comprises at 61 a large external air inlet hole and at 611 a third air inlet in communication with the interior of a pipe 62 terminating in a shutter formed by two pellets 63. and 64 each pierced with orifices 65-66 and one of which 65 is fixed while the other 66 is mobile. These holes are only brought into coincidence outside the starting speeds so that at these speeds the hole 61 cannot be supplied with outside air.

   As soon as the piston 16 has returned to the left after having placed the conduits 13 and 15 in communication and having placed the bellows in connection with the engine intake, it uncovers the orifices 25 and 61 and causes an abundant inflow of air. The bellows thus quickly returns to its initial position, but at a desired moment, as soon as the clutch disc comes into contact with the plate, the lever 67 is activated which extends the piston 16 towards the end. outside by a cam 68 or by any other suitable member attached to the rod (reference 5 of the main patent) connecting the bellows to the clutch lever $) As a result, at this moment, the piston 16 moves towards the straight just enough to cover hole 61 and allow air to enter the bellows only through hole 25.

   When the vehicle is moving, the hole 611 will allow more rapid re-entry of air in the intermediate gears as soon as 61 has been closed, which makes it possible not to waste time during gear changes.

   However, it is ensured that this hole 611 does not allow this additional re-entry of air during start-up and it is for this purpose that the pellets 63 and 64 are provided and that the distributor 63-64 is controlled appropriately so that the holes 65 and 66 do not face each other when placing the gear shift lever in the start positions. The flow rate of hole 611 can be regulated by an interchangeable nozzle.

   The pads 63-64 can be replaced by any other device capable of fulfilling the same function and it is for example possible to provide an electrical control comprising a needle controlled by a solenoid.

   FIG. 2 relates to a variant in which the shutter comprises a cylinder 70 which is placed in communication in its middle by a connection 71 with the bellows and at one end with the suction of the motor (pipe 72 and connection thread 73 taking on the cylinder 70).

   At each of its ends, the cylinder 70 is closed by fixed pellets 74-75 with each of which cooperating rotating pellets 76-77 wedged on a rod 78 passing through the pellet 74 and which can be controlled from the outside by means of solenoids 271 and 551 by means of a lever 79. These solenoids can be assimilated from the point of view of their function to the solenoids 27 and 55 of the first patent no. 497,015 of July 15, 1950.

   The pellets 75 and 76 each comprise a hole 79-80 and its holes can come into coincidence so as to put the suction in communication with the bellows (duct 72 - holes 79-80 - inside the cylinder 70 - connection 71) .

   The movable pellet 77 is pierced with a single hole 81 while the fixed pellet 74 is pierced with a relatively large diameter hole 82 and a small hole 83.

  It can be seen from Figures 4, 4A and 4B and 5, 5A and 5B that when the solenoid 271 rotates the pads 76-77 from left to right, the hole 82 of 74 will no longer correspond to any hole of 77. By However, at this time, the hole 80 of 76 will be superimposed on the hole 79 of 75 and communication will be established between the suction and the bellows by the connection 71 (position of FIGS. 4A and 5A). We will disengage.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   For the return of the quick clutch, the current no longer passing through solenoid 271, pin 78 will return to its original position and the outside air will enter through the large hole 82 superimposed on 81 (fig. 4) while the shaft munication ceases between holes 79 and 80. The connection between Inspiration and the bellows is therefore cut.

     At a desired time, and as provided in the first improvement patent, when solenoid 551 receives current through the return of the clutch lever, the pads 76 and 77 will be rotated from right to left so that the hole 81 will be put in coincidence with the small calibrated hole 83. At this moment, the air intake towards the bellows will be done slowly.

   The operation is therefore the same as that explained above.

   The solenoid 551 could be replaced by a mechanical device, for example of the type shown in FIG. 1.

   It is easily understood that one could order the return of the clutch plates in more than two stages if desired; for example by adding a complementary solenoid controlling another calibrated needle which could cause a return of the clutches and therefore of the bellows, according to a determined speed in a determined time at the moment desired. According to these systems, all kinds of combinations are allowed taking into account the starting softness, the progressiveness of the operating speed of the clutch, controlled or not, between the intermediate speeds in order to use the clutch. in its multiple forms of operation, in the most appropriate way.

   In another order of ideas, the possibility of automatic disengagement at a determined speed close to idling may be provided for, in addition to what was indicated in the improvement patent by placing the solenoid in the circuit. 27, fig. 8, of an electrical contact 91 controlled by the oil pressure of the engine, so that this contact establishes the passage of current at low engine speed (lowest oil pressure) and the cuts as soon as it exceeds a determined speed (500) approximately 10,000 revolutions as the case may be) as soon as the oil pressure increases. This contact can be adjusted by a calibrated spring.

   It is even possible to envisage an adjustment by thermostat to avoid the pressure changes caused by the difference in oil temperature.

   In the case of the use of this system with the oil flow or of that which was previously exposed by the tension of the generator (contact 89 placed in the same place as in figure 6) or by a system with flyweight (in direct relation to the engine) and to prevent disengagement in neutral, additional contacts can be provided at speeds other than the starting speeds so that the automatic switch cannot be switched on. be made only through these new contacts and that. the current flow is cut in neutral, no contact being provided in this position.

   The devices operating by the current flow of the generator and by the oil pressure have the advantage of allowing, for different speeds, an automatic disengagement at a perfectly determined low speed of the engine and consequently at an absolute speed of the car that differs according to the engagement of the lever in the various intermediate gears of the gearbox. This disengaging will be caused for example in a four-speed car at an absolute vehicle speed greater for the 4th, less for the 3rd, and smaller for the 2nd.

   This way of proceeding will make it possible to use the engine brake in intermediate gears at a pure speed of the vehicle gradually approaching the total stopa In addition, these devices are easy to install and inexpensive) / while in order to obtain the same result with the weight device in question, it would have to be controlled by the motor, which would create substantial placement complications.

   If desired!) The disengaging in the starting gears.,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 could simply be provided using only the contactor 91 which
 EMI4.1
 establishes the flow of current at low speed in the electro'1 "6: ima.nt 27 either by the current flow of the generator or by the oil pressure because at these speeds also, when the engine is idling , contact 91 will have established the circuit to solenoid 27 and the car will be disengaged.

  When accelerating, the contact 91 will be cut and the clutch will be started for departure.

   In this form of assembly, the automatic contact operating at oil pressure or by the generator, could possibly replace for the start the mechanical contact of the accelerator.

   In practice, however, it will be preferable to keep the contacts provided at the origin of the starting and acceleration speeds for reasons of ease of gradual and smooth starting and rapid change of intermediate speeds and this all. by applying automatic disengagement at low engine speeds in speeds other than the starting speed (see fig. 7, without taking into account references 92-93 which will be discussed later).

   It is also possible to envisage when this automatic disengagement at a low engine speed is planned to place a switch within easy reach of the driver to cut the circuit when the engine is stopped, the gear lever being in neutral, so as not to be disengaged in this position. The additional contacts at each start-up mentioned above would then be deleted.

   In the case of the application in the assembly of the automatic contact 91, the contact 30-36 of the gearshift lever is retained, because when changing the gears when the engine is running above low speed chosen for automatic disengagement, contact 91 has cut off the current flow to solenoid 27, which must be controlled by contact 30-36 for disengagement.

   Another possibility of not being disengaged when the engine is running at a standstill consists in providing on the cable socket of the car speedometer - therefore on the transmission - (figure 7) a system of weights shown schematically at 92 ( or any other suitable means) which cuts off an ignition 93 when the car stops.

   The start will normally be via contacts 40-41 of the accelerator lever 22 (fig. 3 of the main patent) in conjunction with the usual contacts of the starting speeds 32 (39: forward terminal - 391: reverse terminal ).

   It will be understood that when the vehicle sets off, the means 92 being set to immediately establish the contact 93, the current will pass through the automatic contact 91 only when the car is moving. The engine will therefore be able to run when the car is stationary in neutral without being disengaged.

   A greater progressiveness could be provided in the departures by providing, instead of the small air intake 25 (fig. 1), another complementary air intake opening into the duct 62 operating for the starting speeds and the flow of which would be regulated by a variable needle controlled by a regulator actuated either by the engine or by the transmission of the car, so that the air intake is very small when the plates are attacked. clutch and progressively larger with increasing speed. This arrangement could be provided for the various types of shutters described.
