Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   La Fig. 1 est une vue frontale de la presse ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURING OF WOOD FIBER PANELS.

     Several methods of manufacture have already been proposed. from wood fibers obtained by different methods, molded panels suitable for various applications in construction and for functional or ornamental purposes in cabinet making.

   Most of the panels obtained by the manufacturing processes known heretofore have the disadvantage that their intrinsic resistance does not match an appearance and a finish such that they can be used directly, especially for decorative purposes in furnishings and interiors.

   The Applicant has found that it is possible to obtain, from waste woody materials, attractive panels of lig fibers, with high mechanical properties, which can be used directly without further treatment.

   This invention provides a method and apparatus for the manufacture of such panels.

   The process according to the invention consists essentially in molding the surface of the panels while hot in a multiple press comprising shaped metal plates.

   The invention is more particularly useful for the manufacture of boards of waste wood material, preferably cellulose residues resulting from the practice of other processes, such as, for example, the residues of wood. extraction of tannin from chestnut wood.

   According to the invention, the wet panels of lign fibers, obtained by the treatment of waste woody material, are molded in a press which gives them a polished molded surface, the panels thus being able to be molded.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 used directly without any further processing.

   Wet panels are obtained by first subdividing the wood into fragments using a crusher, such as is employed for the production of cellulose, which cuts the wood in a direction parallel to the axis lon - gitudinal of fibers, and then processing it in boilers to extract the tannin. The hot depleted woody material is treated with a mixture of sodium monosulphite and sodium carbonate to neutralize it and to allow a low attack of lignin in the plant material, limiting the removal of the lignin. hemicellulose, serving as a binder for the panels to be manufactured, at about 20% to 30% relative to the total weight of plant material and, what is essential, without destroying the fibers.

   It has been found suitable to use the following mixing proportions, based on the amount of anhydrous wood: sodium monosulfite 7% sodium carbonate 0.7%
The chemically treated material is broken up in a bar mill and the fibers are selected to ensure sufficient uniformity of size. The fibers are then fed into an aqueous slurry consisting of 2% anhydrous wood and 98% water, and treated in a perforated bottom press to produce wet panels, which are introduced into a press. reheated multistage, in which the panels are molded into their final shape.

   The invention is also directed to a particular multiple press, comprising multiple steam-heated platens, to the lower surface of which the shaped mold plates are applied. The plates can be made of aluminum and be secured to the. by means of angles which fix them to their respective hot plates to prevent them from sagging in the pressure.

   A chestnut wood, with a natural moisture content of 45%, was treated to extract about 0.15% tannic acid, the spent woody material having been made into panels as mentioned above.

   Panels molded to a dimension of 3.05 meters x 1.30 meters with a thickness of 2 to 7 millimeters exhibited a breaking load of 250 to 300 kilograms per square centimeter. The specific weight of the panels is 0.850 to 1.100. 3 kilos of wood gave 1 kilo of finished panel.

   The accompanying drawing shows, by way of non-limiting example, the multi-stage hot press and shaped metal plates for said press.

   Fig. 1 is a front view of the press;
Figs. 2 and 2a are detailed views showing the connection of a shaped plate to its respective hot plate, and Figs. 3, 3a, 4.4a and 5.5a are elevations and corresponding partial sections of embodiments of shaped plates.

   The hot multiple press shown in FIG. 1 comprises a frame 1 and hydraulic pistons 2 for lifting the plate 3. 4 indi- cates the hot plates, to which the shaped plates 5 are fixed by means of angles 6 and bolts 7. The angles 5, 6 fixed to the hot plates and shaped plates, prevent the plates from sagging when the press is open. 8 indicates the steam tubes to heat the trays 4.

   The metal plates 5 are shaped to give the panels the desired shape. Fig. 4 shows a metal plate shaped to manufacture panels with grooves 9 in an arc of a circle with a large radius of curvature, FIG. 4 shows a plate for making diamond panels.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

  In the plate, the diamonds 10 are engraved to form a recessed bottom with inclined side walls, for example, at an angle of 60 from the vertical.

   Fig. 5 shows a ribbed metal plate 11 for making wedge-shaped grooved panels with an angle, for example, of 100.

   The multiple press according to the invention has the particular characteristic that the plates are applied to the underside of the hot plate. It is not essential that the metal plates are made of stainless steel. The plates can be made, for example, of aluminum.

   The panels obtained all have the same specific weight uniformly and can be made of non-waterproof, waxed or waterproof material. Their physical and external properties are perfectly uniform due to the manufacture in the special press described above. The surface treatment considerably stabilizes the panels and eliminates any subsequent mechanical treatment, the panel remaining indefinitely polished and elastic.

   It remains of course that the method and apparatus according to the invention can be modified according to requirements, without departing from the scope of the invention.
