 EMI2.3
 amino-hydroxybenzene-o-carboxylique (R1-NH 2).

 EMI3.1

 EMI3.2
 les dérivés suivants des acides 1- et 2-amino-5-hydroxynaphtalène-7-sulfo- nique s : l'acide 1-(4' -aminophényl)-amino-5-hydroxynaphtalène-7,3' -àisulfonique , l'acide 2-(4' -aminophényl)-amino,5-hyàroxynaphtalène-7-sulfonique , l'acide 2-(3'-aminophényl)-amino-5-hydroxynaphtalène-7-sulfonique, l'acide 2-(3' -awinobenzoyl)-amino-5-hyàroxynaphtalène-7-sulfonique , l'acide 2-(4'-aminobenzoyl)-amino-5-hydroxynaphtalène-7-sulfonique, le dé- rivé asymétrique de l'urée, de formule :

 EMI3.3

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

NEW TRISAZOIC DYES AND PROCESS FOR THEIR PREPARATION.

According to the present invention, new valuable trisazo dyes are obtained by coupling, with coupling components, suitable in themselves for the formation of complex metal compounds, diazodisazo compounds of amines of the general formula ( 1) R1-N = N-R2-N = N-R3-NH2, in which R1 denotes the residue of a hydroxybenzene-o-carboxylic acid.,
R2 an aromatic residue of the benzene or naphthalene series, in which the two azo groups are in the para position relative to each other, preferably a residue containing, in a position close to the azo group connecting R2 to R3, a group capable of participating in the formation of metal complexes, and R3 the remainder, linked in position 6 to the azo group, of a 5-hydroxy-naphthalene-7-sulfonic acid,

said remainder being linked to the group -
Diazotizable NH 2, in at least one of poisitions 1 and 2, directly or, preferably, by a connecting element.

In the above formula, the residue R2 denotes an aromatic residue of the benzene or naphthalene series, preferably a residue containing not more than 10 aromatic bonded carbon atoms. The two azo groups linked to R2 are in the para position with respect to each other and valuable trisazo dyes are obtained, in particular from diazodisazo compounds of the genus indicated, containing, in the neighboring position of the group an azo connecting R2 with R3, a group capable of participating in the formation of metal complexes, ie, for example, a carboxylic group, a hydroxyl group or a low molecular weight alkoxy group.

Aminodisazo dyes of the composition given at the start can be prepared by coupling with 5-hydroxynaphthalene acids.

Aminmonoazoic rants of formula: (2) R1-N = N-R2-NH2 (in which the meaning of R1 and R2 emerges from what has already been said).

The aminomonoazo dyes of formula (2) can, for example, be obtained by coupling with a couplable hydroxybenzene-o-carboxylic acid, a diazo compound containing, in the para position relative to the diazotized aminogenic group, a substituent convertible into an NO2 group or acylaminogen, and then transforming the mentioned substituent into an amino group. In this way, for example, 4-amino-4'-hydro- acid can be prepared.

xβhl'-azobenzene-3,3'-dicarboxylic will start from diazotized 2-nitro-5-amino- 'benzene-1-carboxylic acid and 1-hydroxybenzene-2-carboxylic acid, as well as .-Amino 3,4'-dihdroxy-l, -azobenzene 3'-carboxylic from diazotized 6-amino-2-methyl-benzoxazol and 1-hydroxybenzene -2-carboxylic acid.

Many aminomonoazo dyes of formula (2) can be obtained by coupling, with a middle component of the composition H-R2-NH2 (R1 and R2 also have the meaning indicated here) an acid
 EMI2.3
 amino-hydroxybenzene-o-carboxylic (R1-NH 2).

As am.no hdroxybenzèae-o-carboxylic acids, there are in particular considered 4-amino 1-hydroxy-benzene-2-carboxylic acids, such as, for example, 6-chloro- or 6-methyl-4 acid. -amino-1-hydroxybenzene-2-carboxylic acid, 4-amino-1-hydroxrbenzene-2-carbox-b-sulfonic acid, preferably however 4-amino-1-hydroxybenzene-2-carboicylic acid which does not bear d other substituents.

Amines of the formula H-R2-NH2, serving as middle components. in the preparation of the aminomonoazo dyes of formula 2, may, for example, belong to the naphthalene series or, preferably, to the benzene series. The substituent capable of participating in the formation of metal complexes may be a hydroxyl group or, in particular, an alkoxy group; among the alkoxy groups, the ethoxy group and above all the methoxy group will be preferred.

As middle components, the following compounds are considered, for example: aminobenzene,
 EMI2.4
 1-amino 3 methylbenzene, 1-aminonaphthalene, 1-amino-2-methoxynaphtarene, 1-amino-2-methoxynaphthalene-6- or -7-sulfonic acid, 1-amino-2-methoxy- or -2-ethoxybenzene,
 EMI2.5
 1-amino-2-methoxy- or -2-ethax 5 n.ethlbenzene, 1-amin0-2,5-dimethoxy- or -2,5 - diethoxybenzene, 3.-amino-2-ethoxy methoxybenzene, 1-amino-2ox-5-ethoxybenzene, 1-amino-2 proploxy-5-nethoxybenzene, 1-amino-2-hydrozy-5-methylbenzene.

During the preparation of the aminomonoazo dyes of formula (2) according to the method described last, coupling is generally carried out advantageously in a weakly acidic medium, for example in an acetic medium. If the middle components H-R2-NH2 have only a reduced coupling power, then they are generally advantageously coupled under

The diazotization components, of formula H-R3-NH2 are derivatives of naphthalene which contain in position 5 a hydroxyl group, in position 7 a sulphonic group and which contain the group -NH2 diazotizable connected to the naphthalene ring, ie directly in one of positions 1 and 2, or at least in one of these positions 1 and 2 by means of a connecting element, As compounds of this kind, directly containing the group - NH2 on the ring naphthalenic acid, for example
 EMI3.1
 1-amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid, 2-amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid, 2-amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-1,7-disulfonic acid and 1 -chloro-2-amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid.

As compounds of the composition H-R3-NH2, bearing, in position 1 or 2, the -NH2 group outside the naphthalene ring, that is to say via a connecting element, mention will be made, by example,
 EMI3.2
 the following derivatives of 1- and 2-amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid: 1- (4 '-aminophenyl) -amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7,3' -àisulfonic acid, 2- (4 '-aminophenyl) -amino, 5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid, 2- (3'-aminophenyl) -amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid, 2- (3' -awinobenzoyl) -amino-5-hyàroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonique, 2- (4'-aminobenzoyl) -amino-5-hydroxynaphthalène-7-sulfonique, the asymmetric derivative of urea, of the formula:

as well as compounds derived from 2-amino-5-hydroxy-naphthalene-7-sulfonic acid and which are linked to the diazotizable NH 2 group, outside of position 2, also in position 1 of the naphthalene ring, therefore by a ring condensed with the naphthalene ring, such as, for example, compounds of the formula

 is particularly valuable.

The diazotization of aminomonoazoic dyes of composition R1-N = N-R2-NH2 can be carried out according to usual known methods, for example using hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite. The diazomonoazoic compounds thus obtained are then copulated with the coupling components of composition H — R3 — NH2, in an alkaline medium, for example alkalinized with an alkali carbonate.

According to the present process, the diazodisazoi compounds are copulated.

ques of formula (1) given at the start with coupling components suitable for the formation of complex metal compounds. In this case, one considers, for example, the compounds containing a salicylic group, insofar as they are still copulable with the compounds diazodi-

 corresponding sazoics.

The 1-hydroxybenzene-2-carboxylic acid proper and substitution products of the latter, still copulable, such as 6-methyl-1-hydroxybenzene-2-carboxylic acid, can only be copulated with a part of the diazodisazo compounds considered in the present process, preferably with those which are free, in the position near the diazotized aminogenic group, of substituents which make coupling more difficult, such as sulfonic groups.

As particularly valuable coupling components, 8-hydroxyquinolines, such as, for example, 8-hydro- acid, will be considered here.
 EMI4.2
x-quinoline-7-sulfonic acid and above all 8-hydroxy-quinolein proper.

The aminodisazo dyes are advantageously diazotized according to the so-called indirect method, by uniting, for example, with an excess of dilute hydrochloric acid, a solution or a suspension containing the aminodisazo dye in the form of an alkali salt and advantageously still a minimal excess of free alkali, as well as the necessary amount of nitrite.

The coupling of the aminodisazo compound with the coupling component of the kind indicated is advantageously carried out in an alkaline medium, for example in a medium alkalinized with an alkaline carbonate or with an alkaline earth hydroxide, adding if necessary substances which acti = vant the coupling, such as pyridine.

In general, it is recommended to choose the starting substances in such a way that two sulphonic groups are present altogether in the trisazo dye,
The new trisazo dyes obtained by the present process correspond to the general formula:

 EMI4.3
R 1-N = N-R2-N = N-R3-N = N-R4, in which R1 denotes the residue of a 1-hydroxybenzene, 2-carboxylic acid, R2 an aromatic residue of the benzene or naphthalene in which the two azo groups are in the para position with respect to each other, preferably a residue containing in a position close to the azo group connecting R2 with R3, a group capable of participating in the formation of metal complexes , R the residue of a 5-hydroxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid carrying the azo group connecting R2 with R3 in position 6, and connected at least in one of positions 1 and 2, directly or preferably.

by means of a connecting element, to the azo group connecting R3 with R, and R4 designating the remainder of a coupling component capable of forming on its own metal complexes.

These dyes are suitable for the dyeing of the most diverse materials, such as, for example, animal fibers such as wool, silk and leather, in particular however for the dyeing and printing of cellulosic materials such as cotton, flax, rayon and fibran in regenerated cellulose. The dyes can advantageously be treated on the fiber and partly in the dye bath with metal-shedding agents, according to generally known methods. It is advantageously possible to use the process of French Patent No. 809,893, dated April 6, 1936, by the Applicant, and having the title: "Solid shades on cellulosic fibers.", A process according to which dye is dyed. first and then undertakes the treatment with the metal-releasing agents in the same bath.

As agents capable of shedding metals, preference is given here to those which are stable in alkaline solution, such as complex copper tartrates.

In many cases, specific dyes can be obtained.

such as, for example, dicyanodiamide and dicyanodiamidine, or products which, such as cyanamide, can easily convert into such compounds.

Such processes are for example described in the French patent No. 929,599, dated June 21, 1946, of the applicant, and entitled: "Process for improving the fastnesses of dyes and prints obtained with water-soluble dyes ".

7 parts of sodium nitrite are added, in the form of a tetranormal solution, and after cooling to a temperature of 10 - 12, nitrogen is added by pouring in dilute hydrochloric acid, consisting of 35 parts of hydrochloric acid at 30 % and per 100 parts of water. When the diazotization is complete, one copulates, at a temperature of 0 - 5, with a solution of 41 parts of 2- (4'-aminophenyl) -amino-5-hydroxynaphthalene-7,3'-disulfonic acid, alkalized with sodium carbonate. Stir a few hours, heat to 50, neutralize with hydrochloric acid until the bright yellow paper shows an almost neutral reaction and precipitate the dye formed by adding 20 parts of chlorine. sodium chloride per 100 parts by volume of the coupling mixture.

After cooling, the whole is filtered and the collected dye washed with 25% sodium chloride solution. This is dissolved in 1500 parts of water by adding 12.5 parts of a 30% solution of sodium hydroxide, 7 parts of sodium nitrite are added in the form of a tetra-normal solution and the mixture is added. dinitrogen, at a temperature of 10 - 15, pouring 60 parts of 30% hydrochloric acid, diluted with 120 parts of water. Stir a few hours, destroy the excess nitrite with sulfaminic acid, add a solution of 14.5 parts of 8-hydroxy-quinoline made weakly acidic with hydrochloric acid, then a solution of 60 parts of sodium carbonate in 250 parts of water. The temperature is maintained at 5-10 by adding ice.

When coupling is complete, the whole is heated to about 70, 10 parts of sodium chloride are added per 100 parts by volume of the mixture, and the dye is filtered off. When dried, it forms a blackish powder which dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid, giving dirty blue solutions, and in water giving blue-violet solutions. After copper plating, the dye on cotton is a navy blue tending to green, of good fastness to light and of remarkable solidity in washing.

A dye is obtained which gives shades which are even more green, by replacing the 2-methyl-4-amino-5-methoxy-4'-hydro- acid.
