<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

DOUBLE SHUT-OFF VALVE FOR COMPRESSED AIR BRAKE :, DIRECT AND AUTOMATIC.
The present invention relates to the so-called double shut-off valves, which are used in compressed air brake installations for railway or other vehicles, equipped with both direct compressed air brake and compressed air brake. automatic, the first being used normally in service and the second as an emergency brake.
The double shut-off valve is, in a way, an automatically operating three-way valve, one way of which is connected to the direct brake line, another to the automatic brake line, and the third to the brake cylinder, the communication between one or the other of the brake lines and the brake cylinder being established by the play of a distributor piston which is actuated in one direction by the compressed air supplied by the operation of the direct brake and in direction reverse by the compressed air supplied by the automatic brake operation.
To remedy the drawback that these stop valves have of compromising the release of the automatic brake in the event that it is applied after a direct brake operation or if the direct brake line is not permanently connected to 1 'Atmosphere after the release of the direct brake, a fourth track is provided controlled by a spool integral with the distributor piston and serving to vent the automatic brake line when the direct brake is applied. However., applied without more, this arrangement in turn offers the drawback of leaving the vehicle without automatic braking in the event that the auxiliary compressed air tank of the vehicle, which supplies the automatic brake line,
has been completely drained by venting it to the atmosphere
The present invention relates to a double shut-off valve which, while allowing the automatic brake line to be vented, prevents accidental emptying of the auxiliary reservoir.

To this end, according to the invention, the fourth channel of the stop valve, controlled by the slide secured to the distributor piston to bring the automatic brake line to atmosphere, comprises an automatic shut-off device downstream of the slide which operates under the action of the pressure prevailing in the automatic brake line and cuts off communication with the atmosphere, to prevent the auxiliary reservoir from emptying, when this pressure reaches a determined value.
Below this value, for example when the pressure which builds up in the automatic brake line does not result from a deliberate application of the automatic brake but from an auxiliary maneuver, such as a coupling maneuver. hoses when coupling vehicles, the automatic brake line remains in communication with the atmosphere and the release of the direct brake is not compromised.
The appended drawing represents by way of example an embodiment of the invention, the single figure being a view in longitudinal section of a double shut-off valve according to the invention.
This double valve comprises a body 1 closed by a cap 2 and containing a sheath 3 pierced with slots 4 in which can slide a distributor piston 5 driving a slide 6 held on its mirror by a spring 7
In the position shown, which is that of direct braking, the piston 5 puts in communication, through the slots 4, the track 8 connected to the direct brake line, with the track 9 connected to the brake cylinder, while the track 10 connected to the automatic brake line is cut from the brake cylinder by the piston 5 and vented to the atmosphere by the spool 6 which discovers the slot 11 opening into the fourth channel 12 of the double valve.
The track 12 has the shape of a cylinder in which a shutter piston 13 can slide by compressing a spring 14 which tends to keep it at the bottom of the cylinder, where it discovers a calibrated leak groove 15 through which the track 12 communicates with the 'atmosphere through openings 16 leading to a central duct 17 of the piston rod 13 and a port 18 of the stopper 19 screwed into the cap 20.
If a low air pressure builds up in the automatic brake line 10, for example as a result of a coupling operation of the hoses, the compressed air escapes to the atmosphere through the escape groove. 15 without moving the shutter piston 13.
On the other hand, if this pressure comes from an automatic braking maneuver simultaneous with direct braking, for example the opening of an alarm signal, the value of the pressure in line 10 will be high enough to cause the piston to descend. shutter 13 which is applied to the seal 21 by cutting off communication with the atmosphere and thus preventing the draining of the auxiliary compressed air tank which supplies the line 10. When the automatic brake line is drained by the triple valve, actuated by the mechanic, the spring 14 will return the piston 13 to its initial position.
