 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

CLOTHING PRESS FOR USE ESPECIALLY IN DYES AND CLOTHING FITNESS WORKSHOPS.

The present invention relates to presses used for clothing and relates more particularly to a number of improvements made to mechanical presses actuated by a source of force and intended mainly for commercial use.
Given the arduous conditions in which this type of work is carried out, it is essential that the press or the machine used reduce the operator's fatigue to a minimum and allow him to speed up his work rate. Requirements, many types of presses actuated by mechanical force have been proposed heretofore. However, although these machines reduce the fatigue of the operator and allow an increase in the output, it is observed on the other hand that the result is a notable reduction in the quality of the finished work.

The main cause of this drop in quality is that the closing pressure of the elements is not adjustable and that all clothes are therefore pressed the same way, regardless of the texture or the quality of the fabric. As a result, once the operation is completed, the appearance of certain types of clothing is altered.

When pressing a garment, it is necessary to steam it so as to soften the fibers of the fabric before applying the head to the box spring. Similarly, after having opened the pressing elements, it is desirable to inhale the moisture or partially dry the garment. Until now, this operation has been carried out by the operator who for this operates a certain number of hand and foot levers. This frequently results in wasted steam because the pressing elements are too far apart from each other and the steam is not trapped in a fairly limited space above the garment after passing through it but can be trapped. immediately escape to the atmosphere, so that the vapor does not act quickly on the exposed surface of the garment.

Likewise, when drying the garment, the pressing elements are generally separated by a large gap, so that the heat from the head of the press-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

is not usefully used to preheat the dry air sucked through the garment and thus increase its ability to absorb moisture. Also, in order to steam and effectively dry the garment, the pressing operation must be prolonged, which thereby increases the cost of the operation.

One of the aims of the invention is to allow the production of a press or pressing machine actuated by a mechanical force and comprising a device thanks to which the operator can vary the closing pressure quickly and easily, with his fingertips. pressing elements, of any desired value, within the limits of the machine's capabilities.

Another object of the invention is to allow the production of a pressing machine actuated by a mechanical force with which the garment to be pressed can, if desired, be automatically steamed before the closing of the pressing elements when these The elements are relatively very close to each other and be automatically subjected to suction as soon as the garment has been pressed, while the elements are likewise relatively little apart from each other.

Another object of the invention is to reduce the quantity of steam necessary for the softening of the garment before its pressing as well as the time required for its drying, once the pressing has been carried out.

Yet another object of the invention is to allow the adaptation of accessories which can be mounted on any common type of mechanical press for clothes making possible their actuation by mechanical force and thanks to which the operator will be able quickly. and easily vary the closing pressure of the pressing elements, automatically steaming the garment before pressing and automatically sucking up moisture therefrom after pressing.

Finally, another object of the invention is to enable the production of a pressing machine capable of performing this pressing quickly and efficiently without altering the quality of the fabric while reducing operator fatigue.

Other secondary objects will become apparent on reading the description which will follow, made with reference to the accompanying drawings.

According to one of the embodiments of the object of the invention, the pressing machine comprises a pair of conjugate pressing elements mounted on a suitable frame, one of these elements being intended to be moved by hand up to to a preliminary closed (or half-closed) position located at a predetermined distance from the other element and at which it stops temporarily While the pressing elements are held in this preliminary closed position, the garment is automatically steamed. By the simultaneous operation of control and safety levers, mounted on the mobile pressing element, this mobile element is applied mechanically against the fixed element. The pressure with which it is applied can be changed by the operator by means of the control lever.

Once the two elements are applied against each other, the control and safety levers are released and the elements assume a preliminary open position and remain there temporarily. While the pressing elements are in this position, the garment is automatically freed of moisture or dried by dry air passing through the pressed garment. Finally, the operator, by pushing the movable pressing element or by operating a release pedal, can raise this element to its position of maximum separation or opening in order to be able to remove the finished garment from the machine.

As shown in particular in Figs 1 and 2, the clothes pressing machine in question here comprises the usual frame 20 on which is fixed a base 21 forming the fixed pressing element. EMI5.5
The pin 66 which connects the links and 65, is engaged in the lower end of the arm 61 of the crank lever 220 The other end of the longer link 65 is articulated to a pedal 67 for mechanical actuation (see figso 1 and 2)

fig. 1, that is to say in the horizontal position or so, the pneumatically operated mechanism is put to rest, and the pressing elements 21 and 22 must be controlled entirely by hand by the operator. This makes it possible to operate the machine even in the event of failure of the mechanical actuation mechanism. The mechanical actuator pedal 67 is articulated around

When the control lever J ± is pressed, the pull rod ± rises, thereby imparting an anti-clockwise movement to the lever 83, which determines the opening of the valves 28 and 36 and keeps the valve 30 closed. On the contrary, when the control lever 74 is released, the head 22 of the press comes to occupy the position shown in fig.2, and the lever moves in a clockwise direction, which forms the valves 28 and

6 and opens the valve Oo This allows the escape of the air which is in the swivel cylinder 26.

The swivel cylinder assembly shown in fig. 5 is linked
 EMI6.5
canically to the fiL orifice of the distributor 25. by a flexible pipe 2li :. secured to the base of the cylinder body 94 In this body 94 is mounted so as to be able to slide therein a piston 95, the rod 6 of which protrudes outwardly.
 EMI6.6
The cylinder body 94 pivots on the frame about an axis 91. On the opposite end of the piston rod 96 is mounted a locking cam 98.

As shown in fig. 6, the cam 98 is formed of two parallel flanges 100 and 101 placed face to face at some distance from each other. Between the flanges 100 and 101 of this cam is a locking plate 102 articulated on them by means of a pin 103 passing through appropriate orifices 104 made in said flanges and in said plate 102.
 EMI6.7

In these flanges are also formed slots or slots 105 and 106.

Each of these slits is provided with an edge 107 provided with a lip 108. The locking plate 102 is itself cut with a slit z0 having substantially the same shape. But the edge 111 is not provided with a slit z0. a lip as in the case of the slots 105 and 106.

On the body 94 of the cylinder is mounted approximately parallel to the piston rod 96 a post 112 which rises above it and on the upper end of which is screwed a nut 113 for adjusting the worm.

rou. This nut abuts against one of the angles HZ. of the plate 102 and varies its position relative to the flanges 100 and 101. The effect of changing the relative positions of the plate 102 is to modify the retaining effect of the lip 108 as described below.
 EMI6.9
In the slots 105, 106 and 110 is engaged an axis hlr fixed at each of its ends to arms 116 which are themselves rigidly connected to a push rod 118 around an axis 120.

This push rod 118 is articulated at one of its ends to a rear lever 121 around a

pin 122 and at its other end to an anterior articulated member 123. The posterior lever 121 is articulated to the base .72. of the frame 20 around the axis 11 and at its other end to the rear link 124 around an axis in. The link 124 is connected at its other end 126 to the Y-shaped arm .6l. The rear lever 21 and the rear link 124 cooperate with each other to form an articulated system. It follows that when the
 EMI6.11
vier 121 and the connecting rod 124 form substantially a straight line, the pressing elements 21 and 22 are closed.

The push rod 118 is designed so as to pivot around the axis 122 and to exert a push against a cup-shaped buffer 127 mounted on the lever ¯ ± La A conjugate cap 128 also forming a buffer is provided on the rod thrust 118; it can be adjusted in order to come better to bear against the damping cup 127.

The front member 123 of the articulated system is pivotally connected to the frame 20
 EMI6.12
around an axis ¯12o The other end 130 of this member 123 is arranged to

actuate the automatic steam admission and suction mechanism which is described in more detail below.

When the axis 115 is against the edge 107. as shown
 EMI7.1
fig. 59 the pressing elements 2 and I2 are held in the preliminary closed position or in the locked position, i.e. approximately 1905 mm from each other., As shown in figo 2, and the head 22 cannot be brought into contact with the base 21 by the pneumatic pressure as long as the control lever 74 has not been actuated. When the lever
 EMI7.2
control 74 is lowered, piston .2i rises in the cylinder body and locking cam 9¯8 and pin 112 occupy position A (Fig. 5).

Lip # and a spring 7, tending to pull cylinder 26 and rotate it clockwise, hold pin 115 against edge ¯1.02.

When the control lever 74 is released, the head 22 is returned to the preliminary open position or locked position, which is the same as the preliminary closed position shown in Fig 2 by a res-
 EMI7.3
balancing spell 132 attached to the Y-arm. To release the head 22 from this preliminary opening position and to bring it to the fully open position shown in pin 1, an L-shaped lever 133, connected pivoting to the frame at one point 134, rotates cylinder 26 counterclockwise

to laugh. The shorter arm 135 of the lever 133 is slightly curved and attacks a roller Lµmounted on the body 4 of the cylinder at a point located below the axis of rotation 37 of this cylinder body.

The other arm read, that is to say the longer arm of lever 133, carries at its end a
 EMI7.5
ball joint 138 for the release pedal! 0, which is pivotally mounted on the z-base of the frame 20 at a point 141 Lowering the HO pedal causes the L-lever 133 to rotate clockwise around the point 134 and causes roller 136 to move counterclockwise around point 97. When cylinder assembly 26 moves

counterclockwise, the axis] ,, moves away from the edge 107 and the head can be brought to the fully open position with the help of the compensating spring 132. The relative position occupied by the cylinder by relative to the frame when the head 22 is in the fully open position is indicated by position B on pin 5.

As long as the release pedal 140 is kept lowered, the head can be moved from the closed position to the fully open position without being stopped by the locking device. Likewise, when turning the locking device adjusting nut 113

safety lever 142. (Figs. 12 to 15). The lever is fixed at one end to a shaft 143 about the axis of which it can pivot.

A coil spring j.4, surrounding the shaft 143, in the vicinity of the lever 142. normally maintains this lever in a vertical position, as visible in figs 13 and 15. The ends of the shaft 143 are journaled in the flanges of the

handle 145 .. which are attached to the Ygl arm. The control lever there is pivotally mounted on the shaft 143 and is located such a distance from the safety lever 142 that the operator cannot operate both levers with one hand. This arrangement of the levers eliminates any possibility of accident that may be caused to the hands of the operator by the pressing elements. Control lever 74 pivots independently of the shaft

 146. The plate 150 is provided with an orifice 151 through which passes a pin 152 mounted on the shorter arm 152 'of the control lever 74. On

the plate l.0 are arranged locks 153 and 154 placed on each side of the hole a The tabs 155 and 156 of the locks 153 and pass through the hole 151 and allow the axis 152 to move in only one direction around the periphery of this orifice.

The latch 153 which is arranged at the bottom of this orifice can only move in the counterclockwise direction due to the presence of a stop 157 mounted on the plate 150 and attacking a shoulder 158 provided on this latch. Shoulder 158 is normally
 EMI8.2
applied against the stop 157 by a spring 160. The lock z which is placed above the orifice 151 can also only move in the anti-clockwise direction due to the presence of a stop 161 mounted on the pla-
 EMI8.3
150 and attacking a shoulder 162 of this lock 154.

A spring 163 keeps the shoulder 162 applied against the stop 161. It will then be understood that the pin 152 must make a complete turn around the periphery of the orifice.
 EMI8.4
151 before returning to its starting position. A spring 164. fixed by one of its ends 165 to the housing and by its other end to the plate 150, constantly ensures the positive engagement of the cam 147 with the plate.

When the operator wishes to actuate the head 22 to perform the pressing operation by bringing into contact with the base 21, he presses the safety lever 142, thus turning the cam 147 in the anti-clockwise direction in looking at fig. 14, which has the effect of lifting
 EMI8.5
worm plate .12Q, so that the pin 152 remains at the bottom of the hole 151. The control lever 2,1 which functions as an elbow lever can then be lowered causing the pin 152 to pass through. above the lock 153 The head and the base are then in the closed position.

To open or spread the pressing elements ;, release the safety lever and return it to its normal vertical position., Which lowers the
 EMI8.6
plate 110 which comes to rest on the flat 167 of the cam 142. The axis 152 then moves along the upper edge of the orifice 151 when the control lever 74 is released and passes over the latch 154.

It can therefore be seen that any command from the operator tending to avoid using the safety lever while he actuates the control lever to close the pressing elements results in making these pressing elements inoperative. For example, immobilizing the safety lever in its lowered position locks the pressing elements in the closed position. Furthermore, if the safety lever is kept continuously in its vertical position, the pressing elements can no longer be closed.

When the base 21 and the head 22 are in the preliminary closed position, as shown in FIG. 2 The garment placed on the box spring is automatically steamed in order to soften the fabric fibers so that this garment can be pressed effectively.

In this case, the steam which saturates the garment is brought to the bed base by a nozzle or a diffuser 168 disposed below the exposed face of the bed base and connected to a steam valve itself mounted inside a housing 168 'indicated by broken lines in figs. 1 to 3. A suction valve, which will be discussed later, is fitted in the same way.

in the housing 168 '. However ;, if desired, the adduction of the steam can be ensured by the head 22. The head being applied to the bed base and the safety and control levers 142 and% being released, the head normally comes to the open position. preliminary position which corresponds to the preliminary closure, and the pressed garment is automatically subjected to suction effect or dried.

This is done using dry air drawn through the garment. arriving through the nozzle 168 and exiting through the suction valve of the housing 168 '. The van-

The steam treatment and the aspiration which occur automatically, are triggered by means of a system of levers which will be

The lever 178 is lowered and the arm 173 is not affected by this displacement, while the lever 191, which is prevented from rotating counterclockwise by the stopper 192, deflects the arm 188 to the left or in clockwise around the shaft 177. The other arm connected to the arm 188 by the differential bolt 187, likewise turned clockwise and, the lever 193 is driven in the counterclockwise direction

The edges 203 and 2U of the buttons 170 and 171 have appropriate graduations 205 and 206o The graduations 205 of the button z0 indicate the vapor pressure (very high, medium or relatively low) which is applied to the garment.

The pressure corresponds to the number 205 arrived in front of a mark fixed on the frame just above the button. A benchmark is also provided for cooperation

rer with button 171. The graduation 206 placed on button 171 indicates the value of the vacuum created or the force of the suction applied to the garment. The two buttons have a "stop" position in which the arms

173 and 188 are separated from the levers 182 and 190, so that the axis 200 connecting the rods and located on the front member 123 cannot

not come into contact with the snap-release levers 178 and 191 when this member is moving. In this case, therefore, neither automatic emission of steam nor automatic suction will occur.

The pedal 186 controlling the arrival of the steam at the bed base, the

Furthermore, the pressing operation can also be semi-automatic, that is to say that the displacement of the head to bring it into contact with the base for the pressing is carried out by hand, but the treatment with the steam and the suction taking place respectively when the elements are in the preliminary closing and preliminary opening position and are always done automatically.

  OPERATION.

It goes without saying that certain modifications can be made
 EMI10.12
in the field of mechanical equivalences to the specific embodiment described and shown, without departing from the invention. For example, as shown in Figs. 16, 17 and 18, an electrically operated mechanism can be used instead. of the distributor 25 and of the pivoting cylinder 26 to open and close (or move aside and bring together) the elements'

The gas brake shoe is normally maintained in its braking position.
 EMI11.7
As visible in the connection diagram (Figo 18),!) There is provided a main contactor 228 with two positions of the current type (not shown in figs. 16 and 17) A locking switch 230 shown near the main switch 228 on fig. 18 is fixed to the outer face of one of the support plates and is not actuated until the movable pressing element 22 is in the preliminary closed position. When the head 22 reaches the preliminary closed position, the arm 231 of contactor 230 attacks frame 20 (fig.17) and closes contactor 230. When the locking contactor is closed, the mechanism is ready to operate.

First, the operator pulls the rack 224 by making
 EMI11.8
turn the pinion 221. which lowers the control lever 7, and turns the limit switch 222. The blade D2 of this switch comes on the contact 233 thus closing the circuit going to the relay 23. The motor 20 and the brake 226 are then actuated. The motor -PU shaft rotates by driving the shaft 215 through the worm 213 and the pinion 21 so that the actuating arm 223 follows the limiter switch 222.

When the operator considers that the pressure of the head on the bed base is sufficient, he stops pressing the lever.
 EMI11.9
control 7 and the limit switch 222 stops rotating while the motor continues to run by driving the actuating arm 223 until the 3 ± µ stud mounted at the lower end of this arm hits the blade 232 and breaks the circuit by stopping the mateuro The control lever 74 being released, the rack 224 is returned to its initial position by springs 236 which themselves turn the limit switch 222 in the opposite direction by bringing the cam 232 on the contact 237 of the relay in thus reversing the direction of rotation of the motor.

The actuating arm 223 then moves the limiter switch slightly until the latter returns to its starting position (as shown in fig. 16) and comes against an adjustable stop 238 fixed to the
 EMI11.10
support plate 216. By striking the stop gâ8 =., the blade 232 separates from the contact 237 and opens the motor and brake circuits.

tUT When the head 22 lowers to reach the preliminary closing position (Fig. 2), the roller 218 mounted on the lower side of the
 EMI11.11
read push rod moves along a recess 2.0 in cam 217 and then moves away from the periphery of the cam so that spring 217 'of the cam expands clockwise to take its position of work, so as to form a rim on which the roller can rest when the head is released by the operator. The spring 217 'prevents

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

che the roller 213 to fall back into the recess 240.

When the operator presses the control lever 74, the shaft 215 turns clockwise and the roller rolls over the irregular periphery of the cam 217, so that the rear lever 121 under the resulting thrust, is brought to its vertical position when the roller approaches the highest point of the periphery of the cam.

When the operator releases the control lever% the cam 217 turns in the opposite direction and the roller 218 again comes to rest on the edge of the elastic member 240 of the cam, which corresponds to the preliminary opening position of the cam. head. When the operator lifts the head, the component of the forces exerted on the spring by the roller deflects this spring counterclockwise and the roller can fall back into the recess 240. When the roller is at the bottom of the Obviously, the head is in the maximum open position.

The magnetic brake 226 visible in the assembly diagram shown in fig. 18, is energized when the engine starts and lifts the brake shoe 227 away from the disc 212, allowing the shaft 211 to rotate freely.

It can thus be seen that the clothing press actuated by an energy source in accordance with the invention allows the operator to modify easily, quickly and with the fingertips the pressure applied by the head to the bed base. within the limits of the machine's capabilities, depending on the type and texture of the fabric of which the garment to be shaped is made. The machine also includes a safety device intended to prevent false maneuvers which the operator could accidentally perform, by requiring that he remove both hands from the pressing surfaces of the. head and the base in order to manipulate the control and safety levers of the pneumatic device causing the head to be raised or lowered onto the base in the pressing position.

In addition, the machine automatically provides steam treatment and suction of moisture from the garment during the pressing operation.

Finally, the machine that is the subject of the invention enables the pressing operation to be carried out quickly and efficiently without impairing the quality of the fabric and it also reduces operator fatigue.
