<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The Applicant has found that valuable metallizable monoazo dyes are obtained when the following procedure is carried out: - an aryl diazonium compound is copulated, which bears in position ortho relative to the diazo group a metallizable substituent or a group capable of be transformed into such a substituent, and may have for the remainder other usual substituents azo dyes, with a 1-acylamino-8-hydroxynaphthalene compound, devoid of a group which dissociates with an acid reaction and capable of rendering the molecule soluble in water and bearing an R-SO2 group in position 6 of the naphthalene ring.
The symbol R denotes an optionally substituted hydrocarbon residue, belonging for example to the aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic series, or else the ammonia residue or the residue of a primary or secondary organic amine, which may bear all of the following. hydrocarbon residues, optionally substituted, on the nitrogen atom, for example of the aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic series, these residues can be linked to each other and form, with the nitrogen atom, heterocycles, for example piperidine or morpholinic nuclei.
The new metallizable monoazo dyes differ from analogous dyes by better fastness properties, by their pure colors and by their beautiful shades in artificial light. when they are in the form of metal complexes, in particular in the form of chromium and cobalt complexes.
The coupling components used for the preparation of the monoazo dyes according to the invention are also new and form part of the invention. We get them

from known 1-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene-6-sulfonic acids. or their salts, by protecting the amino and hydroxyl groups, for example by reaction with phosgene to obtain the corresponding peri-naphthoxazinone-sulfonic acids or their salts, then transformation of the sulfonic group into a sulfonyl halide, for example with the aid of phosphorus halides.
The compound obtained is then reacted either with ammonia or with primary or secondary organic amines, or it is reduced to sulfinic acid, which is then alkylated - or finally it is reacted with reactive aromatic hydrocarbons or their inert derivatives bearing positive substituents, in the presence of Friedel Gratis condensing agents. The compounds are then saponified in aqueous or organic aqueous solution with the aid of alkalis and the 1-amino-8-hydroxy-6-sulfonyl-naphthalene compounds are obtained, which are then acylated. Examples of acyl residues include organic carboxylic and sulphonic acid residues, carbaminic acids and. semi-esters of carbonic acid.
The acylation takes place in aqueous or organic solution with the aid of anhydrides or acid halides, for example acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride, phenoxyacetyl chloride, sodium chloride. benzoyl, p-toluenesulphonic acid chloride, methanesulphonic acid chloride, ethanesulphonic acid, sodium cyanate, phenyl isocyanate or alkyl esters of chloroformic acid.
The sulfonated monoazo dyes according to the invention, which preferably contain a sulfonic group in the diazo component, are suitable for dyeing wool.

A particularly valuable group of monoazo dyes according to the invention is obtained when diazotization components are used which do not contain a group which dissociates with an acid reaction and which is capable of making the molecule soluble in water and coupling in which the R-SO2 group promotes solubility in water, that is to say compounds in which R denotes an alkyl or alkenyl group of low molecular weight, for example a methyl or chloromethyl group, ethyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl or vinyl, preferably however an amino residue derived from ammonia or from an organic amine of low molecular weight, preferably primary, for example from a methylamine, ethylamine, isopropylamine,
monoethanolamine or 2-hydroxypropylamine.
As diazotization components, we will preferably use:

These dyes are particularly suitable for dyeing natural or synthetic polypeptide fibers in an aqueous bath in pure colors, ranging from blue-violet to blue-green, when they are in the form of their complex compounds of chromium or cobalt. By a judicious choice of the components of diazotization and of the substituent R, as well as of the acyl residue of the component of coupling, one can favorably vary the color properties of the dyes, in particular their affinity for the fibers and their solubility.
The metallization of the monoazo dyes in accordance with the invention is advantageously carried out in aqueous solution or suspension at high temperature, in an open container or under pressure, where appropriate in the presence of organic solvents such as ethylene glycol or dioxane, at using chromium (III) or cobalt salts.
For the chromating it is advantageous to use the alkali salicylatochromiates, for the cobalting of the cobalt salts in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
aqueous solution The dyes having an alkoxyl group in the ortho position will preferably be metallized in formamide or in ethylene glycol with chromium (III) salts at a temperature exceeding 100; the alkoxylic group is. transformed into a hydroxyl group. Complexes of chromium and cobalt which have two dye molecules bound to a heavy metal atom are particularly suitable for dyeing natural or synthetic polypeptide fibers, such as wool, silk, lanital, superpolyamide fibers and superpolyurethanes, in weakly alkaline, neutral or weakly acidic bath.
For the dyeing of polypeptide fibers, use is made in the form of alkaline salts, for example lithium, sodium, potassium or ammonium salts, preferably in the presence of wetting agents and of dispersing active by their anions. For the coloring of acetyl-cellulose solutions ready to be spun and varnishes, it is advantageous to use them in the form of alkali salts, free of mineral salts. Mixtures of dyes according to the invention or mixtures of these dyes with other similar metallizable dyes can also be metallized.
Finally, it is also possible to prepare monoazo dyes according to the invention which do not contain groups which dissociate with an acid reaction or groups which promote solubility in water and then convert them into organic solutions, for example. using metal salts, in complex compounds of heavy metals. It is thus possible to prepare complex compounds of copper, vanadium, manganese, chromium, nickel, cobalt or iron, which are suitable for the coloring of nitrolacs or acetylcellulose lacquers, as well as for coloring. of silk acetate solutions ready to be spun.
