Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 à l'intérieur du carter est maintenue.

   This invention relates to devices for supplying a solid material in a granular or pulverized state from a region containing a gaseous or / and vaporous fluid under one pressure, to a region containing a gaseous or / and vaporous fluid under another pressure. For example, it may happen that a solid material has been brought from a region of low pressure to a region of higher pressure of a combustion apparatus comprising burners arranged to receive a stream of primary air under superatmospheric pressure and pulverized or granular carbon.

  Various devices have been proposed for forming a tight seal at the location where the cha.rbon enters a primary air duct operating under internal pressure. Operation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Appropriateness of many of these devices depends on the tightness of the mechanical arrangements intended to reduce air leakage to a minimum. This is true both for the various types of "star" wheel and "cell" wheel feeders and for several types of paddle and belt feeders.

   To obtain a tight mechanical arrangement, it is necessary to carry out precise and expensive machining of the working members and, as these members are subjected to continuous abrasion by the friction of the carbon and cannot be lubricated, the use of special metals and the careful execution of readjustment of the clearances which occur is frequently necessary. In addition, even very small hard foreign bodies which may be in the fuel can cause disturbances requiring repair work.

   The operation of other devices depends on the shutter action exerted by the material, as occurs in screw conveyors or flow chutes in which a vertical column of material which can reach several meters in height is stored. In the case of downspouts, each particle is held in place only by the force of gravity acting on the particle and by the forces exerted on it by other particles. In the case of a screw conveyor the force of gravity exerts only a weak closing action or often does not exert any, with the material being subjected to the action of the screw so that each particle is held in place by the force exerted by the screw itself or / and by the pressure exerted there by neighboring particles.

   The present invention relates to a device for bringing a solid material in the granular or pulverized state from a region containing a gaseous or / and vaporous fluid under one pressure to a region containing a gaseous or / and vaporous fluid under another pressure, characterized in that it comprises a hollow rotor with a central inlet device for receiving material from one of the regions and a material outlet device remote from

 the axis of rotation of the rotor, intended to discharge the material from the rotor into the other region and capable of being substantially or completely closed to the flow of gaseous or / and vaporous fluid between the regions by the material packed in the rotor by centrifugal force.

   The rotor is intended to rotate around a vertical axis.

  It comprises a flat annular upper plate 6 coaxial with the axis of rotation, a circular lower plate 7 also coaxial with the axis of rotation and of which. upper surface 8, except for the hub and the peripheral parts is slightly inclined downwards in all radially external directions, and an annular cylindrical peripheral wall 9 also coaxial with the axis of rotation and externally delimiting the internal space of the rotor.

   The upper and lower peaks 6 and 7 of the rotor are held at. a fixed distance from each other by a series of circu-

 also the annular wall in the desired relative position by fixing to the upper plate 6 of the rotor an annular flange 11 extending radially towards the interior of an upper part of the annular wall.

   The annular wall 9 descends beyond the lower rotor plate 7 and the lower edge of the latter is the space of the annular wall, so that an annular gap 12 opening downwards is formed between the lower plate of the rotor and the annular wall, that is to say laterally with respect to the rotor.

     - The housing 1, inside which the rotor is placed comprises upper and lower flat annular plates 13 and 14 respectively and an annular cylindrical peripheral wall
15, concentric with the top and bottom plates and secured thereto at or near their outer edges, the plate 13 being removably secured in place by a flanged joint. The air inlet pipe 2 sends the air radially inwards into the casing 1 through an opening 16 in the annular wall of the casing and the air outlet pipe 3 sends the air radially towards the housing. exterior of the casing 1 via another opening 17 in the annular wall of the casing, diametrically opposed to the opening 16.

   The upper plate 13 of the housing has a central opening 21 and a vertical collar 22 is fixed thereto around the periphery of the opening 21. At the upper edge of the collar 22 is fixed a support 23 carrying a carbon sealing ring 24 for form a carbon seal.

   The upper plate of the rotor is also provided with a central opening 25 and a vertical collar 26 is fixed to this plate on the periphery of the opening 25. At the upper edge of the collar 26 is fixed a support 27 carrying a plate of. metal seal 28 for the carbon seal.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   The carbon sealing ring 24 occupies a ballast 29 formed in the support 23 to receive it and it is biased downwards by a spring, so that its lower face is pushed into contact with the upper face of the metal sealing plate 28; a plastic sealing ring 30, introduced into an annular housing formed in the internal wall of the housing 29 of the support 23, bears against the internal surface of the carbon sealing ring 24 and prevents air from leaking into the atmosphere through the gap between the carbon seal 24 and the support 23.

   The casing is supported by means of four lugs 31 formed on the annular wall 15, by uprights 32 rising on a seat plate 33. The rotor is supported by the vertical shaft 34 of a motor. electric control 35, fixed to a console rising on the base plate 33, by means of an extension 36 of the shaft which is fixed by its lower end to the shaft 34 of the motor and by its end upper to the lower plate 7 of the rotor.

   On the underside of the lower plate 14 of the housing, at the opening 41 of the latter through which the shaft extension 36 passes, is fixed a housing 42 which surrounds the latter to form a second seal. in coal; this carbon seal comprises a fixing device 43 on the shaft extension inside the casing 42, this fixing device itself forming a casing for receiving a coil spring 44 urging a ring d carbon seal 45, rotating at the same time as the fixing device, to bring it into contact with a cover plate 46 bolted to the housing.

   The spring 44 inside the fastener also holds in place a cup crimp 47 intended to prevent air access to the small gap between the carbon seal ring 45 and the shaft extension 36 .

   The rotor is intended to receive pulverized coal through the central opening 25 of the upper plate 6 of the rotor. To one

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 short distance from this opening, inside the collar 26, a vertical tube 48 extends to the bottom of the pulverized carbon hopper 5. The hopper is supported at the same time as the tube, by any suitable device ( not represent).

   Three compressed air pipes 49 entering the lower pladue of the casing are intended to deliver compressed air in jets contiguous with the annular gap 12 between the outer edge. of the lower plate 7, of the rotor and of the annular wall 9 of the latter. The flow end 50 of each compressed air hose
49 is oriented so as to discharge in a direction having a component of movement opposite to that of the tangential movement of the parts of the rotor adjacent to the discharge end of the pipe, with a component of the movement away from the axis of rotation of the pipe. rotor and a component of the movement being directed upwards. The three discharge ends of the compressed air hoses are angularly equidistant from the axis of rotation of the rotor.

   The supply of compressed air through the compressed air hoses is regulated, for example by simultaneous adjustment of three separate valves 51, each mounted in a compressed air hose, or preferably by the operation of a single valve by which passes all of the air from the three pipes.

   In use, the pulverized coal coming from the hopper 5 through the tube 48 inside the rotor 4 is thrown by the centrifugal force outwards into the rotor. This being actuated at a sufficient speed, the pulverized coal does not however tend to flow, without the intervention of the air ts, in a continuous manner under the action of the forces between the particles and in a lesser proportion under the the action of gravity, from the inside of the rotor through the annular gap 12, because the centrifugal force drives out so violated each particle towards the annular wall 9 of the rotor that the friction prevents the fall of the particles, and a free surface 52, stationary in relation to the rotor,

   tends to form at the annular gap 12 and to take at all points a slope angle depending on the centrifuged force. The annular wall 9

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 of the rotor extends a sufficient distance below the lower rotor plate to retain the coal under these conditions.

   The average radius of annular gap 12 in the apparatus shown is 6 inches (15 cm). The electric motor 35 is intended to rotate the rotor at a speed of 1450 revolutions per minute, and when it rotates at this speed, each particle of matter adjacent to the annular gap is subjected to a centrifugal force exceeding 300 times the weight. of the particle due to gravity.

   . When the air jets are put into action, the pulverized coal is driven out of the gap 12 and under the influence of the centrifugal forces acting on the pulverized coal inside the rotor, and the force of gravity, a new amount of charcoal coming from inside the rotor takes the place of that which has been removed. The charcoal removed by the air jets is drawn into the air stream leaving the housing through the air outlet pipe 3. The rate at which the charcoal is removed from the annular gap by the jets air depends on the speed at which compressed air is supplied to the jets.

   The centrifugal force acting on the pulverized carbon particles inside the rotor compacts the pulverized carbon at least in the outer regions of the interior space of the rotor, causing the pulverized carbon to settle down. the interior of the rotor forms a tight seal opposed to the passage of air from the interior of the casing to the atmosphere through the pulverized carbon.

   The up and down outward tilt of the upper surface 8 of the lower rotor plate 7 is intended to prevent the coal from getting stuck during its outward movement in the rotor, since the thickness of the mass of carbon between the upper and lower rotor plates 6 and 7 inside the rotor increases as the carbon moves outward over a large part of the radius of the rotor.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   Assuming that the rotor is full of pulverized coal and that there is pulverized coal in the hopper tube 48, ready to be brought into the rotor, and up to some intermediate level inside the hopper 5, the pulverized coal located in the rotor then rotates as a single unit with the rotor, the coal inside the hopper, in its entirety, or in major part, is not influenced by the rotation of the hopper, while that in some intermediate region along the coal path the pulverized coal is in a partially thinned state.

   All other things being equal, the level of the pulverized coal in the hopper does not affect the rate of admission of the coal into the air stream passing through the sump; consequently it suffices to feed the hopper with pulverized coal in any suitable manner, continuously or intermittently, without overloading it or allowing it to empty; for example, the hopper could be an intermediate hopper in which the outlet emerges from the bottom of an upper hold.

   The air stream passing through the casing 1 may be a primary air stream suitable for transporting the pulverized coal at a desired speed to a hearth combustion chamber for burning there, for example a cyclone hearth chamber. The cyclone hearth can be used to heat a steam generator intended to operate under a variable load, and the valve or valves 51 regulating the admission of compressed air into the pipes 49 can be arranged to be controlled automatically by a pulse. control derived from a vapor pressure measuring device at 1.

   steam output of the steam generator with a view to maintaining, by varying the quantity of pulverized coal sent to the combustion chamber of the cyclone hearth to burn there, a constant steam pressure at this steam outlet. Other control pulses, such as a pulse derived from an instrument for measuring the CO2 content of the gases leaving the chamber of the cyclone hearth, uvent,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 if desired, be used in conjunction with that derived from vapor pressure.

   Figs. 4 and 5 show a modified installation which, in certain respects, is more complicated than the installation according to FIGS. 1 to. 3, but which is intended to eliminate the possibility of undesirable heating of pulverized coal by internal friction, which would be feared if the latter installation were employed in a case where the demand for pulverized coal would be zero for long periods, but where the existence of superatmospheric pressure inside the crankcase could nevertheless require the rotor to continue to rotate during these periods for sealing reasons.

   As shown in figs. 4 and 5, the rotor 104 is similar in construction to that of the rotor 4 described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3 and includes upper and lower trays
106 and 107 respectively, coaxial with the axis of rotation of the rotor, an annular cylindrical peripheral wall 109 which externally delimits the space situated inside the rotor and which descends below the lower plate 107 of the rotor between which and the annular wall 109 is formed an annular material escape gap 112, and a circular series of spacer rods or spacers 110 to hold the upper and lower plates in a relative rigid position one by one. relative to each other and to rigidly fix the annular wall to the upper plate.

   A vertical collar 126 is fixed to the top plate 106 around a central opening 125 formed therein. The rotor is fed by a fixed chute 161 which discharges into the space located at. the interior of collar 126 near the upper end of the latter. The rotor rotates around a vertical axis inside a housing 101 of the same general construction as that described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, and which comprises upper and lower plates 113 and 114 respectively, interconnected and spaced from each other by a wall

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 annular cylindrical peripheral 115, to which are fixed an air inlet pipe 102 and, at a point diametrically opposite to it, an air outlet pipe 103.

   The lower rotor plate 107 is attached via a hub 162 to a drive shaft 163 which is slidably mounted in a fixed bearing 164 above the housing and in a fixed bearing 165 at the top. below the latter. The rotor drive motor 135 is mounted above the drive shaft, in the extension thereof, and its shaft 134 is connected to the drive shaft 163 by means of a transmission. forks 166 whose forks are connected by metal wires 167 with sufficient slack to allow the control shaft to occupy, while it is actuated, any vertical position between determined limits.

   The vertical position of the drive shaft determines the vertical position of the vertical non-rotating rod 168 of a valve. compressed air 169 of a balanced type. The rod 168 is located in the extension of the control shaft 163 and below the latter and the valve plug is rigidly supported by the console 177.

   This valve has a central chamber 170 to which compressed air is supplied by an inlet pipe 171, upper and lower chambers 172 and 173 respectively, interconnected by a balancing pipe 174, valves of the type to. needle 175 and 176, respectively, on the valve stem to control the airflows from the central chamber simultaneously to the upper and lower chambers, a diaphragm top wall 181 for the upper chamber, connected to the stem and a diaphragm bottom wall 182 for the lower chamber also connected to the valve stem, the arrangement such as downward movement of the valve stem has the effect of increasing the flow of the valve stem. air through the valve.

   The weight of the rotor and its contents is transmitted from the rotary drive shaft to the valve stem 168 by a rotary thrust bearing 183 and is absorbed by a coil compression spring 184 at the lower end.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 valve stem.

   Three outlet pipes 149 start from the upper chamber of the compressed air valve, pass through; the bottom plate
114 of the casing and terminate near the annular gap
112 between the lower plate of the rotor and the annular wall of the latter. The flow ends 150 of the pipes to. compressed air are oriented in the same way as the discharge ends of the compressed air hoses described with reference to figs. 1 to 3, and .are angularly equidistant around the axis of the rotor.

   The escape of air from the interior of the housing to the atmosphere through the central opening 121 of the upper housing plate 113 through which the rotor collar 126 passes is prevented by a hydraulic guard comprising a annular water bowl
185 formed between the upper surface of the upper plate 113 of the casing and a suitably shaped piece 186 fixed to the plate 113e and in which extends so as to be submerged in water around the entire circumference of the bowl, a plate 187 attached to the outer face of the vertical collar 126. A similar hydraulic guard is formed below the lower plate 114 of the housing, in the bowl 188 of which is immersed a disc 189 attached to the hub 162.

   The hydraulic guards allow the vertical movements of the rotor 104 relative to the housing 101 between predetermined limits. To some extent, they also serve as a vibration damping device.

   The lower surface 190 of the upper rotor plate 106 is inclined slightly on all sides, from bottom to top, radially outward, and the upper surface 108 of the lower rotor plate 107 is inclined slightly on all sides from top to bottom. radially outward to facilitate movement of the pulverized coal inside the rotor under the action of centrifugal force.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

   As regards the operation, a table feeder, a feeder provided with an endless conveyor device, a vibratory feeder, or a feeder of any other suitable type (not indicated), feeds the pulverized coal in such a way as to do so. fall through the fixed chute 161 into the rotor, the speed of arrival by the feeder being that at which it is necessary for the pulverized coal to be carried by the current of air passing through the casing.

   If the air jets are constantly blowing the pulverized carbon at least at this rate in the intermediate interval 112, the weight of pulverized carbon carried by the rotor increases, the rod 168 of the air valve 169 descends, the air is blown through the jet nozzles at a higher speed and the pulverized carbon is removed from the annular gap at a higher rate; similarly, but conversely, if the air jets at any time remove pulverized carbon from the annular gap at too high a speed, the rod 168 of the air valve 169 is raised, the air nozzles discharge the air at a slower rate and therefore carbon is removed from the annular gap at a slower rate.

   Thus, the control of the air jets operates rapidly and automatically so that the current of air passing through the casing entrains the pulverized coal at the same speed as that at which it is supplied by the. chute, the weight of coal driven by the rotor being practically constant. Arrangements will be made so that the rotor is not normally full of carbon during operation.

   Arrangements are made so that the entire range of air jet control is covered by only a slight vertical displacement of the rotor; there is therefore no appreciable change in the position of the annular gap in relation to varying conditions. ax flow ends of air pipes.

   Since there is no transition zone between a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 rotating mass and a fixed mass of pulverized carbon, the rotor can be kept rotating even when the intake rate of pulverized coal is zero, without there being any danger due to internal frictional movement in pulverized coal. The seal is maintained by the pulverized carbon located inside the outer elements of the rotor and compacted by centrifugal force, and by the hydraulic guards.

   According to another line, laughing at the installation shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the installation of figs can be changed. 4 and
5 by replacing the air valve 169 by an electric switch and by using a feeder, for example a vibratory feeder set in electromagnetic vibration to bring the pulverized coal to the rotor 104 by the chute 161, this feeder being controlled by the switch and , being animated when it rotates at a rate of flow higher than the maximum speed at which the pulverized coal is to be fed from the rotor into the air stream passing through the crankcase - The rate at which the pulverized coal is thus entrained is regulated manually, or automatically under the action of certain external control impulses, by adjusting the speed of air intake to the air jets.

   Arrangements are made so that when the weight of coal driven by the rotor increases beyond a predetermined value, as should occur after a long or short period of time from when the feeder has been switched on, the electric switch stops the feeder, while when the weight of the coal driven by the rotor drops below a predetermined lower value, as it should happen, if the air jets are in action, after a long or a short period of time from the moment the feeder is stopped, the electric switch turns it on again.

   This predetermined lower value of the quantity of carbon inside the rotor is such that the desired tightness with regard to the prevailing air pressure.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 inside the crankcase is maintained.
