<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to a method and to an installation for monitoring and controlling the degree of heating of a metal strip; it relates more particularly to the control of the melting of a tin coating on a steel strip traversing a continuous line of electrolytic tinning. After the tin coating has been applied to the strip, the strip is often heated to melt the tin and cause it to flow. This is done in order to improve the properties of the tinplate. The heating of the strip is most often caused by making it pass through a current of high intensity as it passes through a melting zone.
An installation for controlling the power delivered to a zone of: d'livr (-, e

fusion is described in US Patents 2,432,801 and 2,419,214 filed June 28, 1943 and August 6, 1943, respectively. Heating the strip to melt the tin causes this metal to melt together with the steel on their common face, which has the effect of creating a layer of tin-iron alloy between the steel and the steel. 'tin.
The tin coating is thin and the tin-iron alloy layer created by this process is often of such a thickness that it adversely affects the solder of the tinplate when given, for example. the shape of containers
It has been found that satisfactory thin films of tin-iron alloy can be maintained on electrolytically tinned products when the coating's melt energy, or degree of heating, is set to a value only slightly greater than. that necessary to give a tinplate having a glossy sheen and a plain finish. Prior to the invention, a degree of heating was maintained to melt the tin coating such as to produce a bright luster of the tinplate without apparent overheating.
To ensure that the temperature of the tin is sufficient to obtain the desired result, it was common practice to bring the strip and the tin to a temperature above 260 C. It has been demonstrated that this method of proceeding had for result of giving a product of satisfactory appearance but comprising a layer of tin-iron alloy of a thickness largely exceeding the thickness suitable for the. welding operations. With the installations in use prior to the invention there was no indication of the degree of heating of the moving strip and therefore the operator could not easily determine the temperature of the latter.
It has also been found that the degree of heating can be used as a means of indicating the approximate thickness of the tin-iron alloy layer.
The object of the invention is therefore, on the one hand, an installation making it possible to monitor and control the degree of heating.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of a moving metal strip, in particular in the case of an electrolytically tinned strip where the purpose of heating is to melt the tin and make it flow on the strip, on the other hand a process for making an iron electrolytic white having a thin iron-tin alloy layer.
These objects. And other characteristics of the invention will appear more clearly in the following description and in the accompanying drawing, showing by way of example an embodiment of the invention.
The single figure is a schematic view of part of a continuous line of electrolytic tinning and of an indicating and control device assigned, on this line, to the melting zone of the coating.
In the drawing, reference 2 designates the area where the coating is carried out on an electrolytic tinning line through which a steel strip S. After this zone, the strip S passes over rolls 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 The cylinders 6 and 10 are conductors and they receive an alternating current coming from a transformer 14. The current therefore passes through the portion of metal band between these two cylinders and it causes the heating of this portion and the melting. of the tin coating, which improves the coating. The power delivered to the melting zone, that is to say to the zone between the cylinders 6 and 10, is regulated by a saturable inductor 16. The energy is supplied: to the primary of the transformer 14 by the conductors d L1 and L2 power supply.
The reactance of the saturable inductor 16 is controlled by a winding 18 supplied by a generator 20 having an inductor 20F. The supply of this inductor 20F is provided by the source L3-L4. A rheostat 22 controls the power supply. tion of inductor 20F. This rheostat can be actuated by hand but it is preferably controlled by a reversible motor 24.
It can therefore be seen that the power delivered to the fusion zone can
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
be regulated by action on the rheostat 22. A thermal energy converter 26 has a winding 26F connected to a current transformer 28 arranged on the conductor connecting the transformer 14 to the cylinder 6 and a second winding 26F1 connected to the two conductors connected respectively to cylinders 6 and 10; these two windings are mounted in a conventional manner. Converter 26 may be provided with a scale 30 scaled in units of total power delivered to cylinders 6 and 10. A wattmeter may act as converter 26.
A self-balancing potentiometer or voltage divider 32 is combined with heat converter 26 and has an index or contact finger 34 which moves with an index 36 associated with. the graduation 30. The indexes 34 and 36 are set in motion by the motor 37 of the self-balancing potentiometer 32. A reversible motor 38 is electrically connected to the indexes 34 and 36 by the conductor 39. A second potentiometer 40 is mounted in series with the potentiometer 32 and with a battery 42, the contact 44 of this potentiometer '40 being connected to the resistance of the potentiometer 32. The motor 38 forms part of a self-balancing potentiometer 46 comprising a resistor 48 and an index, or contact 50, mechanically connected to the motor 38.
The index 50 is combined with a scale 52 graduated in units of heat per unit of weight of steel heated. The motor 38 comprises an inductor 38F supplied by the source L5-L6. A potentiometer 54 provided with a contact 56 is mounted in series with the resistor 48. A tacho generator 58 is mechanically coupled to the cylinder 6, so that it is driven at a speed proportional to the speed of the metal strip. . This generator 58 is mounted in series with the potentiometer 54 via the conductors 60 and 62.
The conductor 62 is also connected to one end of the resistor of the potentiometer 32. When it is desired to have an automatic control of the power delivered to the cylinders 6 and 10 a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
circuit is arranged for the control of the motor 24. This circuit comprises inductors 24F and 24F1 and a battery 64. The inductor winding 24F is connected to a fixed contact 66 and the inductor winding 24Fl to a fixed contact 68. A contact 70, mounted on the index 50, moves with the latter.
The operation and calibration of the installation are presented as follows. The degree of heating in watt- 'Wh hours per kilogram of steel is equal to: W x T xsx K where Wh represents the energy delivered to the melting zone expressed in watt-hours, W is the width of the strip in millimeters, T is the total thickness of the strip in millimeters, S is the speed of the strip in meters per minute, and K is a constant equal to 0.468.
The value of the constant K is obtained by multiplying 60 by
1000 and by 7.8 x 10-6 (weight of one mm3 of steel). Assuming that the battery 42 has a voltage of 20 volts, that the scale 30 is graduated from 0 to 2000 kilowatts, that the tacho generator 58 gives 10 volts for a belt speed of 305 meters per minute, that the The '52 scale is graduated from 0 to 44 watt-hours per kilogram, the potentiometer 40 is graduated from 0 to 965 mm of band width, and the potentiometer 54 is graduated from 0.16 to.
0.50mm tape thickness, tape speed is 305 meters per minute, tape width is 965mm, tape thickness is 0.33mm, and that the degree of heating required to achieve the desired temperature of the tin coating is 44 watt-hours per kilogram, the total power to be delivered to the melting zone will be equal to the product of watt-hours per kilogram. kilogram per. total weight passing through the fusion zone in one hour. The total weight is equal to:
305 x 965 x 0.33 x 0.468 or 45,500 kg. The power to deliver
45,500 x 44 'will therefore be: - 1,000 or 2,000 kilowatts. The rheostat 22 is adjusted so that this power is supplied to the driving cylinders 6 and 10.
The potential difference between the conductors
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
39 and 62 will be proportional to the total power delivered to the conductive cylinders and will also be equal to the potential difference between conductor 62 and contact 50. The potential difference between conductors 39 and 62 is changed by adjusting the potentiometer 40 so that its movable contact is at the point corresponding to a width of 965 mm and the potential difference between the contact 50 and the conductor 62 is modified by adjusting the potentiometer 54 for a value corresponding to a thickness 0.33 mm.
It has been found that the temperature of the molten tin must be maintained between 243 and 2540 in order to achieve the desired appearance without bringing the thickness of the tin-iron alloy layer to an unsuitable value. the welding.
Assume, for the purposes of the example, that 44 watts per kilogram of metal strip keep it between these two temperatures at all times. When the potential difference between ''; -. the conductors 39 and 62 is different from that existing between the contact 50 and the conductor 62, the motor 38 acts to move the contact 50 until these two voltages are equal. The contact, or index 50, then indicates a different degree of heating - 'Tent', and if the control is not automatic, the rheostat 22 must be operated by hand until the contact 50 returns to the desired position. If the contact 50 moves to the left it in. will indicate a lower degree of heating than desired.
When the automatic control shown in the diagram is used, this causes the closing, by contacts 70 and 66, of the circuit of the inductor 24F, which causes the rotation of the motor 24 in a direction such that causes rheostat 22 to increase the power applied to conductive cylinders 6 and 10 until contact 50 returns to its first position. In the event that the degree of heating is too high, contact 70 closes, via contact 68, the circuit of inductor 24F1, which causes motor 24 to rotate in the opposite direction to reduce the power applied to the conducting cylinders. 6 and 10.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment shown and described, which has been given only by way of example.
