<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a process for the production of insoluble brown azo dyes on articles made of aromatic polyesters.
It is known that articles made from aromatic polyesters, in particular polyethylene terephthalate, can be dyed with insoluble azo dyes, by applying an azo component to the polyester fiber, for example 2-hydroxynaphthalate, l '. 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid or arylamides
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid, and an aromatic primary amine, and then diazotizing and coupling the fiber to obtain the azo dye. In this process, blowing agents which facilitate penetration of the components of the dye into the fiber are often used to produce solid, nourished dyes. This produces dyes whose shades range from orange to black, including red, burgundy and blue.
Now, the Applicant has found that it is possible to produce insoluble brown azo dyes on articles (such as fibers, threads or fabrics) made of aromatic polyesters, in particular of polyethylene terephthalate, by treating these articles under heat. with 2-hydroxy-carbazol-3-carboxylic acid and an aromatic primary amine in the presence of a dispersant, followed by dialing the aromatic primary amine and coupling it with the azo component. Interesting dyes are thus obtained which are distinguished, besides good general fastnesses, especially by very good light fastness.
According to the process of the present invention, it is possible to use as dispersants, for example, reaction products of ethylene oxide with a fatty alcohol or an alkyl-phenol, condensation products obtained from fatty acids of weight high molecular weight and degradation products of proteins or amino-alkyl-sulfonic acids, alkyl-aryl-sulfonates or "monopoly gloss" oil (sulfonated castor oil).
@ Suitable aromatic amines for example, nitro-anilines, chloro-nitro-anilines, nitro-toluidines, nitro-anisidines, amino-azobenzene or amino-azotoluene.
In the present process, the azo component and the diazo component are generally dispersed first with a dispersant, then the two components are introduced into a dye bath which is then acidified with a mineral acid or an acid.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
strong organic, for example oxalic acid or tartaric acid.
The material to be dyed is heat treated in the bath thus obtained, the pH of which should be approximately 3; a hot nitrogen and we copulate. If 2-hydroxycarbazol-3-carboxylic acid is used with amines which tend to form gondronous by-products, for example diamines or amino-azo compounds, it is useful to render first alkaline the dye bath containing the azo component and the diazo component and heat treat in this bath the material to be dyed, for about one hour, the diazo component rising on the fiber. It is then acidified with a mineral acid or a strong organic acid and the heat treatment is continued until the azo component is in turn fixed to the fiber. Finally, we dinitrate in the usual way and we-copulate.
This prevents the separation of tarry products which are often harmful in this type of dye. Once the diazotization and coupling have been completed, the rub resistance of the dyes obtained can be improved, if necessary, by a subsequent hot reduction treatment, in an acid or alkaline medium, using reducing agents or eliminating agents. usual in dyeing.
The following examples illustrate the present invention without, however, limiting it.
EXAMPLE 1.
1 kg of a strand of polyethylene terephthalate is treated for 90 to 120 minutes, at 95-100, in the following bath
A paste is made with: 45 g of 2-hydroxycarbazol-3-carboxylic acid, 45 g of 1-amino-2-methoxy-5-nitrobenzene, 240 cm3 of the sodium salt of 50% sulfonated castor oil and a little water, and it is introduced into a bath containing, in 30 l of hot water.
30 g of a condensation product obtained from a fatty acid of high molecular weight and an amino-alkyl-sulfonic acid.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
15 g of 96% sulfuric acid are added to the bath thus obtained, then rinsed and dinitrogenated with a solution containing, in 30 1 of water: 60 g of sodium nitrite and 90 g of 96% sulfuric acid. %, by immersing the material to be dyed in the diazotization bath at 30-40, heating to 80 and treating for about 30 minutes at this temperature.
The treatment is rinsed and the treatment is continued for about 15 minutes, at 90 minutes, in a bath containing, per liter of water: 1.5 g of caustic soda, 1 g of sodium hydrosulphite and 1 g of a product obtained. by reacting about 10 molecules of ethylene oxide with 1 molecule of an alkylphenol, rinsing again and drying.
A red-brown dye is obtained which has very good light fastness and good wet fastness.
The following table groups a number of other dyes obtainable with 2-hydroxy-carbazol-3-carboxylic acid as the azo component, as well as the shades of the dyes produced which also have good fastness properties.

EXAMPLE 2:
1 kg of 95-100 polyethylene terephthalate flakes are treated in the following bath:
We put in paste:
30 g of 2-hydroxycarbazol-3-carboxylic acid and 30 g of 4-amino-2'.3-dimethyl-l.l'-azobenzene with 39.6 g of caustic soda, 62.5 cm3 of water and 180 cm3 of the sodium salt of 50% sulfonated castor oil, and the paste is introduced, with stirring, into: 30 1 of boiling water, containing: 30 g of the condensation product obtained from an acid fat of high molecular weight and an amino-alkyl-sulfonic acid.
After 1 hour, the following are added: 62.5 g of 96% sulfuric acid, the treatment is continued at pH 3 for a further 1 hour, the rinsing is then carried out, then the nitrogen is nitrogen and the treatment is completed as in Example 1.
A brown dye is obtained with a hint of violet, endowed with very good fastness in the wet state and very good fastness in the light.
Using in the example above 4-amino-2.3'-dimethyl-l.l'-azobenzene or 2-amino-l.l'-azobenzene instead of 4-amino-2'.3-dimethyl -1.-Azobenzene, slightly more yellowish-brownish shades are obtained, having similarly good fastness properties.
