 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  "Improvements in the production of olefinic hydrocarbons."
The present invention relates to an improved process for the production of olefinic hydrocarbons.

   A process has been described in which hydrocarbons are oxidized in the vapor phase in the presence of inert solids and in which the oxidized products alone are dehydrated in the presence of known suitable catalysts, such as alumina or chromium sesquioxide.

   An object of the present invention is to provide a process for converting oxygenated organic products into olefins. Another

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 The object is to provide a process for the conversion of paraffins to olefins which are suitable for use in the production of detergent alkylate.

   By "detergent alkylate" is meant alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbons suitable for use in a process comprising sulfonation and neutralization to form detergent alkyl aryl tallow.

   According to the invention, a mixture of oxygenated organic compounds, obtained by the partial oxidation in liquid phase of a paraffin having at least 6 carbon atoms per molecule, is subjected to dehydration conditions.

   The mixture of oxygenated organic compounds is preferably passed in the vapor phase over a dehydration catalyst. Suitably, the catalyst consists of or comprises an active alumina, for example gamma-alumina. When using gamma-alumina as the catalyst, the reaction temperature is preferably in the range of 250 to 480dC, for example 425C; the reaction pressure will suitably be atmospheric pressure, although, if desired, lower or higher pressures can be used; The space velocity of the feed on the catalyst will preferably be in the range of 0.1 to 2 volumes per volume per hour, for example 0.5 volume / volume / hour.

   The dehydration conditions employed are preferably such that both dehydration and decarboxylation reactions take place.

   According to another aspect of the present invention, a process is provided which comprises subjecting a paraffin having at least 6 carbon atoms per molecule to partial oxidation conditions in the liquid phase to obtain a mixture of oxygenated organic compounds. , and then, with or without separation of components or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 or a mixture of components of the product, in subjecting at least one oxygenated organic compound thus obtained to dehydration conditions. The preferred dehydrating conditions are as described above.

   The paraffin is preferably oxidized by direct oxidation with a gas containing free oxygen; the gas is preferably oxygen or air or a mixture thereof. The oxidation is carried out with at least part of the feedstock in the liquid phase, in the presence or absence of a catalyst.

   Oxidation can be carried out at a temperature of 1200 to 2000 C by blowing air at a rate of 30 to 360 liters per hour per 100 grams of feedstock for a period of 1 to 24 hours. Suitable catalysts for the oxidation are potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide, and mixtures of one part by weight of potassium permanganate or manganese dioxide with one part by weight of a soap of manganese. lead (eg lead stearate). These catalysts can be used in an amount constituting 0.5-10% by weight of the feedstock and can be employed as a suspension of the finely divided catalyst in liquid.

   The oxidation can be carried out continuously or discontinuously.

  The feedstock can be a simple paraffin or a mixture comprising or consisting of paraffins.

   According to another aspect of the present invention, as feedstock to the oxidation phase described above, a straight chain paraffin or a mixture of straight chain paraffins having 8 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule. By using this feedstock, olefins will be produced which are especially suitable for use in the production of detergent alkylate.

   A mixture, comprising straight chain paraffins, suitable

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   for treatment in this way, can be obtained from readily available starting materials by the following methods: .1) forming a complex with urea of a hydrocarbon fraction of petroleum origin, for example a gas -oil, with recovery of the required mixture from the extract; 2) distillation of a crude oil to directly obtain a fraction with a high content of paraffins obtained by direct distillation; 3) the raffinate from a solvent extraction process using any suitable solvent, for example furfural, sulfur dioxide, glycols, such as diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol, with or without water, or phenol and water.

   Likewise, as a starting material, undeoiled paraffins can be used.

   Olefins produced in accordance with this aspect of the invention can be used for the alkylation of lower aromatics, especially benzene and toluene, to produce an alkylate suitable for sulfonation to produce surfactants of. alkyl aryl sulfonates.

   The invention is illustrated, without being limited, by the following example.

    EXAMPLE.

   1000 g of the paraffinic material extracted from a gas oil by formation of a complex with urea was oxidized by blowing air at a rate of 100 liters per hour per 100 g of feedstock , through this material containing 7.5 g of lead stearate and 7.5 g of potassium permanganate in finely divided form, while the temperature of the reaction mixture is maintained at 1450 C. After treatment for 8 hours, the product had a saponification number of 179 mgr KOH / gr and an acid number of 62 mgr KOH / gr.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   The oxidation product was passed over gamma-alumina, as a catalyst, at atmospheric pressure, at a temperature of 427 ° C. and with a space velocity of 0.5 volume per volume per hour.

   The infrared spectrum of the product thus obtained indicated
 EMI5.1
 16.5 by weight of olefins of the type R1 C = CH, 7.3 as R, H R2 by weight of the type H 1> C = CH2 'and 1.6% by weight of the type R1' ---> C CH2 'this represents a total production of 25.4% in poia ofeffnes.
