<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
- .Anhydride acétique 445 kg/heure - Acide acétique 149 kg/heure - Eau 81,5 kg/heure - Ethanal 200 kg/heure
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Improvement in the manufacture of aliphatic anhydrides.
It is known to produce acetic acid and acetic anhydride simultaneously by introducing into a reaction bath containing the suitable catalysts, on the one hand, acetaldehyde and, on the other hand, an oxygenated gas. and by bringing the liquid and gas phases into contact as intimately as possible.
The catalysts employed are generally metal salts, particularly copper and cobalt acetates, or a mixture thereof; but other metal salts can also be used, such as acetates, nitrates, silver, nickel, manganese, vanadium, mercury, tin and uranium chlorides.
The reaction is strongly exothermic and it is necessary to cool by suitable means the bath, the temperature of which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ture should be kept between 30 and 70.
The reaction bath can consist, in part, of a solvent such as ethyl acetate or ethyl phthalate, but it can also consist essentially of some of the products of the reaction themselves and more particularly of a mixture of acid and acetic anhydride.
In order to carry out this latter embodiment of the reaction, a sufficiently large quantity of oxygenated gas is blown into the bath to entrain the products of the reaction in the form of vapors: acid, anhydride and water. These vapors are condensed in a temperature exchanger and the oxygenated gas is returned to the reactor, however after part of it has been removed and replaced by fresh gas providing the oxygen necessary for the reaction, this fresh gas being able to be air, oxygen or more generally a gas containing oxygen.
Taking into account the vapor tensions of the three products of the reaction, the strongest being that of water and the weakest that of acetic anhydride, a composition equilibrium is established in the bath such that the proportion of anhydride is higher than that of acid and that the water content is very low.
The greater the volume of gas blown in, the higher the proportion of anhydride and the lower the proportion of water in the bath. Under these conditions, it is found that a very high conversion yield of the aldehyde into anhydride can be obtained.
This is how, if. the proportion of anhydride in the bath exceeds 85%, the conversion of the aldehyde to anhydride can reach and even exceed 75%.
However, beyond a certain gas blowing, the quantity of vapors emitted by the bath and which depends on the composition, the temperature of the bath and the volume of gas blown would exceed the quantity of products produced at the same time and the level of the oxidation bath would go down.
Knowing that a bath very rich in anhydride is favorable to the production of a large proportion of anhydride by
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with respect to the acid, which is generally desired, it has therefore been proposed to return to the reaction bath, to maintain the constant level, of 1- * acetic anhydride obtained by separation of the mixture of condensed vapors, this separation being carried out by suitable means, avoiding the reaction of water with the anhydride.
This effectively achieves a yield of acetic anhydride of 75 to 80%, acetic acid representing only
20 to 25% of the oxidized acetaldehyde but it is necessary, in order to obtain this result, to entrain and separate quantities of anhydride and acid much greater (approximately double) than those corresponding to the products manufactured, hence a significant expenditure of heat energy, this separation being made by distillation.
The present invention is based on the discovery that such advantageous results can be obtained from the standpoint of the proportion of anhydride produced to the acid, by compensating for the loss of material from the bath due to the bath. significant blowing, no longer by turning over pure anhydride, but by partially condensing the vapors emitted by the bath and entrained by the gases and by fully retrograding this condensate on the bath.
To carry out the invention, a condenser is placed on the circuit of the fluids leaving the oxidizer, on which the flow rate of refrigeration water is adjusted so that the level of the reaction bath is kept constant by strogradation of the condenser. densate obtained (for clarity of the description, this partial condenser will be designated, in what follows, by the term "dephlegmator"),
This device makes it possible to greatly reduce the size of the distillation apparatuses necessary for the separation of the products of the reaction and likewise to reduce the expenditure of heat energy.
The liquid thus returned to the bath is very rich in acetic anhydride but does not consist of pure anhydride; it is therefore surprising that we obtain results in this way
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
. analogues to those of the prior process.
It is possible, without additional operating costs, to further enrich the retrograde liquid in acetic anhydride by sending the vapors and gas from the bath to the base of a distillation column which receives at its top the liquid condensed in the dephlegmator.
This column may be a conventional column with domed or perforated trays; it can, if necessary, directly surpass the reactor; it can also be a filling tower with rings or other filling bodies. However, devices with large liquid reserves should be avoided, so as to avoid hydrolysis of acetic anhydride by water as much as possible.
It can be noted that this distillation in the presence of gas is provided by the heat of reaction itself without any external supply of calories.
In either case, the composition of the bath changes to a state of equilibrium determined by the operating conditions: flow rates of aldehyde and fresh air, recycling of gas, temperatures. These various parameters are adjusted to obtain a bath containing at least 90% anhydride, the remainder being essentially acetic acid.
As for the gases and vapors leaving the dephlegmator, they are subjected, as in the previous process, to a new cooling in another condensation system in which the anhydride, the acid and the liquid are separated. water produced in the reaction.
For carrying out the invention, the following operating conditions will be observed: - Temperature of the reaction bath: 40 to 70, preferably 50 to 60.
- Final condensing temperature: less than 20, preferably less than 12.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
- Gas blowing rate in the reactor: at 6 m 3 per hour per liter of bath, preferably 3 to 4.5 m 3 / hour.
- Proportion anhydride / anhydride + acid in the bath at equilibrium:
85 to 95%.
The following examples will give a good understanding of the operation of the process.
EXAMPLE 1.-
The reaction bath is contained in a container 1 (FIG. 1) which at the base comprises a device for distributing the oxygenated gas (perforated plate for example). Liquid ethanal is introduced into the bath through pipe 2 and the oxygenated gas is blown through pipe 3. The fluids leaving the reactor pass into a dephlegmator 4 where the quantity of cooling water is adjusted, in such a way that the condensed liquid, graded back to the reaction bath via pipe 5, is in an amount suitable for keeping the volume of the reaction bath constant.
On leaving this dephlegmator, the gases pass through a condenser system 6 in which the reaction products condense, which are discharged through 7 to the distillation apparatus. The oxygenated gas leaves through a pipe 8. A gas flush is carried out through a pipe 9 from where. the ethanal is recovered by washing and distillation according to known means. Fresh air is introduced through a pipe 10 and all of the oxygenated gas is returned to the reactor by means of a fan 11.
The operating characteristics are as follows: Volume of the reaction bath 2000 liters Acetaldehyde supply 1180 kg / hour Total blowing by the fan 11 8500 m3 / hour Fresh air supply 1000 m3 / hour Temperature of the reaction bath 55 Temperature of the fluids at the dephlegmator outlet 39 Fluid temperature at the condenser outlet 10
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Liquid downgraded to the bath through the pipe 5 620 kg / hour
Reaction products discharged through pipe 7:
-. Acetic anhydride 445 kg / hour - Acetic acid 149 kg / hour - Water 81.5 kg / hour - Ethanal 200 kg / hour
Yield of anhydride (aldehyde converted to anhydride relative to aldehyde converted to acid + -anhydride) 77.9%
The distillation apparatus will therefore have to treat a mixture of 594 kg / hour of acid and anhydride. In the absence of a dephlegator, it would have been necessary to distill about 620 kg / hour of additional anhydride intended to feed the reaction bath in order to keep the level constant.
As a result, the dephlegmator makes it possible to reduce the importance of the distillation equipment and the expenditure of steam for the separation of the products of the reaction.
EXAMPLE 2.-
The apparatus is identical to that which has been described above, with the addition of a Raschig ring column 1 'surmounting the reactor and at the head of which the condensate from the dephlegmator 4 is downgraded via pipe 5 ( figure 2). The reflux from the base of the column is returned to the bath through a 5 'pipe.
The walking characteristics are as follows:
Reaction bath volume 2000 liters. Acetaldehyde feed 1690 kg / hour
Total blowing by fan 11 9000 m3 / hour
Fresh air supply 1225 m3 / hour
Reaction temperature 60
Fluid temperature at the outlet of the dephlegmator 29
Temperature of the fluids leaving the condensers 11
Downshift to the bath (5 'hose) 1450 kg / hour
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Reaction products discharged through pipe 7:
- acetic anhydride 484 kg / hour - Acetic acid 106 kg / hour - Water 90 kg / hour - Ethanal 317 kg / hour Yield of anhydride 84.3%
The present invention applies not only to the acetic anhydride forming the subject of the above examples, but, in general, to lower aliphatic anhydrides having from 4 to 8 carbon atoms in their molecule. .
