Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     le dispositif suivant l'invention se caractérise principalement en ce que l'intensité lumineuse du tube se régie en agissant sur la tension appliquée aux bornes du dit tube, alors qu'une ionisation. supplémentiqire à celle provoquée par les décharges dans le tube est obtenue par chauffage des fila... ments aux bornes du tube, et entre en servile à la fin du ré- gime de décharge auto entretenue, de Manière à pouvoir continuer à diminuer l'intensité lumineuse du. tube, et donc la tension aux bornes, sans risquer l'extinction de celui-ci par désioni- sation. du gaz y contenu.

     L'invention.     sera     mieux     comprise  en se   reportant   à la description en   mené   temps   qu'au   dessin annexé qui donne, à titre   d'exemple,   le   schéma   de   divers   modes de réalisation de l'invention et dans   lequel :   - la fig.l est le schéma   d'un     dispositif   suivant l'in-   vention   pour le   réclama   de   l'intensité   luminesue   1.,' un   tube      fluorescent;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Device for adjusting the light intensity of fluorescent tubes.

   The present invention relates to a device for adjusting the light intensity of fluorescent tubes making it possible to regulate in a simple and easy manner and within wide limits the light intensity of said tubes.

   As is known, fluorescent tubes use the effect of gas discharges to excite a fluorescent material disposed on the wall of said tubes and thereby produce radiation which is in the visible range.

   This type of tube generally works according to the principle of self-sustaining discharges, that is to say that the potential difference existing at the terminals of the tube allows discharges of an energy such that they generate ionization of the gas allowing a regime continuous discharge, each discharge leaving sufficient ionization for the next discharge to occur.

   To adjust the light intensity of such a tube, the simplest solution that comes to mind is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 in acting on the voltage prevailing at the terminals of said tube and, by reducing this voltage, reducing the intensity of the discharge and thus thereby reducing the light intensity of the tube. This is obtained for example by introducing a variable resistor into the circuit of the tube.

   However, this system has a serious drawback.

  When the voltage at the terminals of the tube decreases, the ionization of the gas also decreases and very quickly one results in ionization conditions such that the discharge can no longer take place. the tube goes out while the light intensity of the tube is still high. This adjustment is therefore only possible within small limits.

   The solution which therefore comes to mind consists in providing the gas contained in the tube with an additional source of ionization, by providing for heating of the filaments of said tube. Thus, the landfill is no longer self-sustaining. , and the ionization of the gas no longer depends only on the energy of the discharge and therefore on the voltage. It is therefore possible to adjust the light intensity within much greater limits, since, as the voltage decreases, the ionization of the gas remains due to the heating of the filaments.

   This system also has a major drawback, but this time when the tube is used in full torsion. In fact, in this case, the ionization caused by the discharge is sufficient to keep the tube in operation, and the role of the filaments becomes superfluous.

   As a consequence, the heating energy, which is no longer converted in the tube into ionization emenge, remains concentrated on the filaments and these burn very quickly. the present invention provides a simple and effective solution to these various problems by providing a system for feeding the tubes in which the heating of the filaments

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 intervenes only when the voltage at the terminals of the tube is no longer sufficient to allow a self-sustaining discharge, and the adjustment of the light intensity of the tube is made from the set * of the voltage, applied to the terminals of the said tube.,

     the device according to the invention is mainly characterized in that the light intensity of the tube is regulated by acting on the voltage applied to the terminals of said tube, while ionization. additional to that caused by the discharges in the tube is obtained by heating the fila ... ments at the terminals of the tube, and enters into bondage at the end of the self-sustaining discharge regime, so as to be able to continue to decrease the light intensity of. tube, and therefore the voltage at the terminals, without risking its extinction by deionization. gas contained therein.

     The invention. will be better understood by referring to the description in time as to the appended drawing which gives, by way of example, the diagram of various embodiments of the invention and in which: - fig.l is the diagram d a device according to the invention for claiming the luminesue intensity 1., a fluorescent tube;

   - Fig.2 shows the diagram of a device for adjusting the light intensity of two fluorescent tubes.

   Following the diagrams shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each device comprises one or more tubes 1 respectively l ', each tube receiving its power supply from network 2 via a variable resistor 3.3' and a ballast 4,4 ', The terminals of the tubes 1, 1' are formed by filaments 5,5 'and 5 ", 5"' connected, for heating to the secondary windings 6,6 ', 6 "6" d' a transformer 7 whose primary 8 is connected to the network, either through

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 a switch 9, or via a switch 10 and a main switch 11.

   the voltage supplied from the network passes through the variable resistors 3,3 'and the ballast 4,4' and is applied to the terminals of the tubes 1,1 'at the midpoint 12,12', 12 ", 12" of the secondary windings 6, 6 6 ", 6 '" of transformer 7, the latter being the transformer of the heating circuit of the filaments 5,5', 5 ", 5 '", 13,13' circuits short-circuiting the tubes 1,1 ' and comprising switches 14,14 ', are designed to act as a hand starter for the ignition of the tubes 1,1'. Ls switches 9 and 14,14 'are mechanically connected.

   A witness lamp 15 can also be provided in parallel on the tubes 11, before the variable resistors 3.3 ', to indicate that the device is under voltage.

   For ignition, the main switch 11 is first closed. Then, using any mechanical device, a push button for example, the switches 9, 14 and 14 'are simultaneously closed, including 'together constitutes an ignition system 16. the closing of the switch 9 causes the commissioning of the transformer 7, and, by the same fact, the heating of the wires 5.5', 5 ", 5", while the closing of the switches 14, 14 'short-circuits the supply of the tubes 1,1', When the switches 9,14,14 'open the heating of the filaments 5,5', 5 ", 5 ' is interrupted at the same time as the power supply short-circuit.

   The two factors, hot filaments and overvoltage caused by the sudden interruption of the short-circuit, promote the formation of discharges in the tube and the tube lights up. The switches 14,14 'thus function as a hand starter.

   To reduce the luminous intensity of the tubes 1,1 ', the voltage at the terminals of these is reduced by inserting into

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 supply circuits an increasingly large part of the resistors 3.3 '. This decrease in voltage is accompanied by a decrease in the intensity of the discharges in the gas, and therefore a decrease in the brightness of the tube, but also a decrease in the ionization of the gas. From the moment when the ionization of the gas is no longer sufficient to allow the regime of self-sustaining discharges, an additional source of ionization comes into service, heating the filaments 5.5 ', 5 ", 5', gei is obtained by closing the switch 10, which activates the transformer 7 of the heating circuit.

   The closing of switch 10 is caused for example by an undervoltage relay. Thus, the gas continues to be ionized and discharges occur despite their low intensity and low voltage across the tube. By this system, discharges can be produced so low that they correspond to a virtual extinction of the tube.

   It is also desirable to connect the power supply for the tube to the midpoint of the 6.6'6 ", 6" coils of the secondary of the heating transformer 7. In fact, as long as there is sufficient voltage is applied to the terminals of the tube, the heating voltage plays practically only one, negligible role, but when the supply voltage becomes weak, if due to the connection of the power supply to the terminals of the tube, all or part of the voltage due to the heating circuit is added to said counterphase supply voltage, this risks causing disturbing fluctuations in the brightness of the tube. connecting the power supply to the midpoint of the secondary winding of the heating transformer eliminates this drawback.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

     1? The invention has been described only by way of nonlimiting example, and it goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to its realization, in particular in the system for adjusting the supply voltage and in the systems of closing switches, as well as in the number of tubes whose brightness must be adjusted, without straying from his mind.
