    @   Pellicule auto-collante en polyoléfine.

  Qualification proposée : BREVET D'INVENTION

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    @ Self-adhesive polyolefin film.

  Proposed qualification: PATENT OF INVENTION

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a self-adhesive polyolefin film provided with a coating,
The invention relates to a self-adhesive polyolefin film provided with a continuous pressure sensitive coating. It also relates to a polyolefin film provided with a coating which is not particularly tacky, but which makes it possible, only by application of pressure, to obtain a good seal between the coated side and the uncoated side. coated with the film.

   Other subjects of the invention will emerge from the description which is given hereinafter.

   The invention relates to a polyolefin film provided with a continuous and cohesive pressure sensitive coating, the coating consisting of a polyvinyl methyl ether. The polyolefin film thus coated exhibits excellent cohesive properties under the effect of a simple application of pressure and it retains its properties even after prolonged periods of time.

   The polyolefin film to be coated can be made from polyethylene, polypropylene or suitable laminates of these polymers. It will be appreciated that the polyolefin base films are treated, prior to the application of the coating according to the present invention, in the usual manner, for example by electric discharge, to give them improved adhesion characteristics. . In addition,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the polyolefin base films to be provided with a coating must not contain any slip agent and must be free of all other materials which may affect the adhesion of the coating to these films.

   The polyvinyl methyl ether coating according to the present invention is advantageously applied to one side of the polyolefin backing film. However, this coating can also be applied to both sides of this base film, when it is desired to provide or even make the film stick to its opposite sides.

   The coating used in the context of the present invention consists of a polyvinyl methyl ether. It is a linear polymer formed from unit or
Methyl vinyl ether meshes, which can be used as an aqueous solution or as a solution in a suitable organic solvent, such as toluene.

   Such solutions exist in the trade ellen + nor a solid content of about 50% by weight, both in aqueous medium and in a solvent. The molecular weights of the polyvinyl methyl ether type polymer can be such that solutions containing 50% by weight of solids have viscosities varying between 40,000 and 100,000 cps.

   Polyvinyl methyl ether is preferably applied to the polyolefin base film, under drenched solution, containing about 5 to 10% by weight of solid material. The solids content, as well as the mechanical factors or parameters employed during the coating operation can vary, to ensure the formation of a continuous and substantially continuous coating.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 uniform on the polyolefin film.

   Although the thickness of this film is therefore not critical, it has been found that polyvinyl methyl ether coatings having thicknesses such as about 0.25. grams to 5 grams of polyvinyl methyl ether are distributed substantially uniformly over each 6450 cm2 area of the polyolefin base film.

   The coating is applied to the polyolefin base film by any conventional method, for example by dipping, by means of a squeegee, by spraying, by etching or the like, so as to form a continuous layer over it. the base film. The coating solution can be applied over a wide range of temperatures. Usually the most convenient method is to apply this solution.
 EMI4.1
 tion at the. ambient tetp4rature.

   Drying of the coating on the base film can be accomplished by applying heat or hot air. The aqueous or organic solvent for the polyvinyl methyl ether can thus be evaporated at temperatures ranging from room temperature, i.e. from about 20 ° C. to about 100 ° C., without the latter. temperature is exceeded.

   If desired, various additive materials, for example ingredients such as non-stick paraffin waxes, can be incorporated into the polyvinyl methyl ether coating to modify the adhesive properties of the coating. It will be appreciated that other known addition materials may be incorporated into the self-adhesive coating of polyvinyl ethyl ether, depending on the application.

 desired tion.

   The following specific example illustrates the preparation of a coated polyolefin film according to the present invention.

   EXAMPLE
A 50% aqueous solution of a polyvinyl methyl ether (sold commercially under the name "Gantrez M" by the Société Général Aniline and Film Corporation) was diluted with demineralized water until a solids content of 5% by weight.

  The solution was applied to a 22 micron thick polyprupylene film which had undergone electric discharge treatment, using a Meier # 6 manual coating device. The coating was deposited at room temperature. and was then subjected to a jet of hot air, to remove the aqueous solvent therefrom.
