Abstract
The present invention is characterized by the process of eliminating contaminant mercury present in solid solid tailings containing strongly adhered Hg¬ 2 +,, such as soils, glass, ceramics, wood, industrial and especially tailings. mercury vapor lamp waste by innovatively using solid reducing chemicals. The process is based on the use of an inorganic chemical reducer, which by simple grinding with the contaminated solid material results in the rapid reduction of the different mercury contaminating species to metallic mercury. This metallic mercury can then be volatilized and easily removed and collected, leading to decontamination of the tailings. The process shows the advantages of being simple, cost-effective, clean, without generating any other type of effluent that needs treatment and yet being able to more efficiently remove mercury more strongly bound to solid waste compared to simple heat treatment.
