Description

        Le dessin annexé représente, à titre  d'exemple, une forme d'exécution de l'objet  de l'invention  La     fig.    1 en est une élévation de côté,       certaines    parties étant représentées en coupe  verticale, en combinaison avec une boîte mé  tallique à ouverture dans le fond supérieur  destinée à être     fermée    .par une capsule;  La fi* 2 est une coupe partielle à plus  grande échelle de l'outil de     repliage    propre  ment dit;  La     fig.    3 montre en coupe, urne forme de  capsule avant sa mise en place;  La     fig.4    montre celle-ci engagée dans  l'ouverture de la boîte métallique à .fermer;

Apparatus for applying closure caps in openings of metal cans. The present invention relates to an apparatus for applying iron meture capsules in openings of lique metal boxes, such as for example those intended to enclose goods to be kept away from air, such as for example condensed milk.

Until now, in metal boxes having a central opening in their bottoms, it was customary to provide a raised rim all around this opening and, the capsule placed in this opening, to fold up the 'upper end of the capsule over the aforementioned rim and the crimping contiguous thereon, in order to achieve a tight seal.

The tightness of this seal depended in the first place on the integrity of the aforementioned rim and then, to establish it, it was necessary to ensure a meticulous mandrining-crimping requiring a rather complicated apparatus and whose operation is often related to difficulties, either as a result of the nature of the metal to be folded over which can tear, or also cry because of defects in the rim to be capped by the folded part of the capsule.

The apparatus which is the subject of the invention is established to allow the application of the closure capsules according to ut, a mode quite different from the current method, with a view to eliminating the drawbacks inherent in the latter. this.

This device is distinguished by a folding tool with outwardly movable fingers arranged to be introduced into the capsule engaged in the opening to be closed and provided, near their free end, with lateral folding lips located in a transverse plane. to the axis of the tool and lateral retaining lugs located in another transverse plane, so that, when the fingers are separated from each other,

the retaining lugs can be applied to an outer rim of the capsule and at the same time the folding lips can push back by folding the side wall thereof under the edge of the opening to produce the tight crimp of the capsule.

        The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. FIG. 1 is a side elevation thereof, certain parts being shown in vertical section, in combination with a metal box opening in the upper bottom intended to be closed by a capsule; The fi * 2 is a partial section on a larger scale of the folding tool itself. ;  FIG. 3 shows in section, the urn in the form of a capsule before it is placed; Fig.4 shows the latter engaged in the opening of the metal box to be closed;

Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the folding tool; Fig. 6 shows the folding tool in place on the capsule to be applied, but before folding. FIG. 7 shows, on a larger scale, the folding tool and the closure cap after folding the latter.

The apparatus shown comprises a mandrel-shaped folding tool, generally designated 8 and comprising a rigid tubular body 9 with an opening 9 'and an expansible sleeve 10, slit longitudinally, so as to form a crown. resilient folding fingers 10 'brought together so that their free ends roughly touch each other, as can be seen in the drawing, this ring of fingers 10' internally having a conical opening 10 "extending the opening 9 '.

The fingers 10 ′ are elastic in the direction of the train versal so as to be able to be forced outwards and to return automatically inwards to their tightening position. The fingers 10 'carry, at their free end, in a plane transverse to the axis of the tool, lateral folding lips 11. and also, in another transverse plain, retaining flanges or lugs 12 longer than the folding lips 11.

The upper or working face of the folding lips 11 is slightly inclined inwards, while the lower working face of the retaining lugs 12 merges with a plane perpendicular to the axis of the tool, so that these two working faces contain between them a free space in the form of a slot which gradually narrows inwards and is intended to receive the metal around the opening of the metal box as well as the metal of the capsule folded over the edge of this opening during the forced opening of the ring of fingers 10 ',

the narrowing of this slot producing the tightening of the folded metal parts art as the action of folding the fingers, in order to achieve a tight seal at the edge of the opening to be closed. The folding lips 11 being at a different level from that of the retaining ears 12, it is understood that, under these conditions, the retaining ears 12 produce a retention and tin smoothing of the upper part of the capsule above the case bottom, while the lips 11, which attack the side wall of the capsule,

push back this side wall of the capsule to fold it back below the bottom of the box, thus covering the edge of the opening thereof contiguously.

The forced widening of the folding fingers 10 'is produced by means of a smoothing neck plunger 13 with frustoconical part 13' housed in the ring of fingers (FIG. 2).

The metal box 14 is supported, below the relsliage tool, in the longitudinal axis thereof. It is mobile relative to the folding tool. For this purpose, it is placed on a plate 15 carried by a threaded rod 16 (fig. 1) screwed into the base of the frame 17 so that the plate 15 with the box can be raised or lowered, by means of a mechanism appropriate.

The folding tool is stationary relative to the plate 15 and is supported by the top of the frame 17, provided with a console 17 'carrying, on a pivot 18, a lever 19 provided with a handle 20. The plunger 13 carries with care at the upper end, a caliper 21 traversed by the lever 19 which is provided with rounded bosses 22, 22 'inside the caliper 21, the arrangement being such that the lowering and raising of the lever 19 affects the plunger 13 a downward and upward movement.

To limit the downward movement of the plunger 13, there is in the path of the lever 19, an adjustable stop 23 formed here by a screw screwed through the support 17 and carrying a head 23 'to adjust its position in height by relative to the lever 19. This stop makes it possible to adjust, in a precise manner, the descent stroke of the plunger 13 and by the, the amplitude of the working stroke of the folding fingers, which has an advantage for the caµ where we are dealing with boxes and capsules of different wall thicknesses.

The capsule, designated as a whole by 24 and made of sheet metal, comprises a bottom 24 'convex in concave-convex shape (fig. 3), a side wall '24 ", by which it fits contiguously into the circular opening. width 14 'said upper bottom 14 "of the canister 14, and an annular rim 24"' facing outwards.

The apparatus described is used as follows: The capsule is engaged in the opening 14 'in the upper bottom 14 "of the box (fig. 1 and 4). The latter is placed on the plate 15 coaxially by relative to the folding tool and is lifted, with the aid of this plate, until the folding lips 11 of the fingers of the tool are inside the side wall 24 ". capsule and below the top 14 "bottom of the box.

This position of the parts is shown in fig. 6 and the folding lips 11 are slightly flush with the side wall 24 "of the capsule, while the retaining ears 12 rest on the rim 24" 'of the capsule and act as a support for the folding operation. subsequent.

The operator then presses the lever 19 to lower the plunger or core 13 between the folding fingers 10 'and separate them all simultaneously so as to force a part of the side wall 24 "of the capsule under the edge of the capsule. opening of the bottom 14 "of the box, folding and crimping the capsule on this edge, as seen in fig. 7, which establishes a tight seal therein, this wall part of the capsule being strongly applied or tightened against the underside of the box bottom 14 ", at the same time as the rim 24" 'which, under the action retaining ears 12,

smooth and snug against the top of the 14 "box bottom.

Although the apparatus is shown with a manual control, it will be understood that it could also be provided with an automatic control. In addition, we can juxtapose a series of these devices to act on a corresponding number of metal boxes. An important advantage which derives from the use of this apparatus is that the opening bottom of metal cans does not need to have a raised rim around the opening which is exposed to during transport or during handling. boxes.
