Description

Device for controlling the running of a machine. The present invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the running of a machine and comprising for this purpose a roller driven by a uniform rotational movement by a clockwork movement and covered with a suitably divided inscription sheet. , a series of oscillating levers arranged to produce an inscription on this sheet and mounted so as to be able to oscillate, on the one hand, in a plane parallel to the center of the roller, and on the other hand, in a plane perpendicular to this axis, a cam drum set in rotation by the clockwork movement and the cams of which are adapted to bring the various levers in turn into contact with the sheet each during one revolution of said roller,

and a mechanism controlled by the machine and adapted to impart to all the levers at the same time, parallel to the axis of the roller, a back and forth movement of constant amplitude, at a speed which depends on that of an appropriate part of the machine.

The lines drawn on the sheet successively by the various levers will present, during the rest of the machine, a rectilinear shape (the sheet being assumed to be developed) and, at least during part of the operation of the machine, a wavy shape, of so that it will be possible to control, according to the position, number and space of the corrugations, different working conditions of the machine.

If it is for example a vehicle, whether motor vehicle or not, it is possible to record using this device the speed achieved by the vehicle, the number of kilometers made, the stops it has made and their duration, the time at which he left or returned etc.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention applied to the control of the running of a vehicle.

Fig. 1 is a front view thereof, FIG. 2 a side view and FIG. 3 a plan, some parts broken up or removed for clarity.

1 designates a cylinder on which is rolled a sheet of metallized paper or waxed paper or the like, for example squared so as to be divided in the direction of the width into twenty-four bands corresponding to twenty-four hours and in the direction winding in sixty bands corresponding to sixty minutes.

This cylinder, controlled by a clockwork movement not shown, makes one full revolution per hour.

Levers 2 (only two of which are shown) carry either silver pencils 3 for the metallized paper, or simple points for the waxed paper or any other writing device; they are articulated by axes 4 on parts â which are themselves movable around a longitudinal rod 6 parallel to the axis of cylinder 1.

Return springs 7 attached to a bar 8 constantly hold the upper ends of the levers 2 away from the roller 1 and, on the contrary, support their other ends provided with rollers or balls 10 on a drum 11 whose axis is parallel to that of the roller. roll 1.

This drum carries twenty-four bosses 12 arranged in a helix turn and so as to act successively on the twenty-four levers 2 during one revolution of the drum.

Each of the levers 2 will thus be actuated by the corresponding boss 12 for one hour, and, consequently brought into contact with the roller 1, during one revolution of the latter.

On the other hand, a sliding bar 13, provided with teeth 14 or forks, is arranged to actio_iner all the levers 2 at the same time by making them oscillate in a plane parallel to the axis of the roller 1.

This bar 13 is provided with a lug 15 which is engaged in an oblique groove 16 of a drum 17, rotating in correlation with the wheels of the vehicle, for example at the rate of one revolution per kilometer traveled. Reading the traces produced on the roller 1 by the levers each successively placed in contact with it for one hour will reveal the use which has been made of the vehicle; the straight lines will indicate the stops and their duration, the winding lines the number of kilometers completed, each complete undulation corresponding to one kilometer.

The drum 17 may be connected by any transmission, flexible cable or the like, either to the wheels, or to the rear axle, in the case of an automobile, or to any other component of the vehicle.

When the roller 1 has made a complete revolution, the drum 11 will have turned a twenty-fourth turn, the lever 2 in action will be moved by the respective boss 12 and, returned by the spring 7, s' will move away from the surface of the roller 1; at the same time the following lever 2, pushed by the neighboring boss 12, will in turn be placed in the registration position.

To facilitate adjustment and setting the exact time, it will be possible, for example, by rotating the drum 11, to control hands indicating the time on a dial, and to mount the drum and possibly also the cam roller with clutch.

This apparatus can be used alone or in combination with other apparatus such as speedometer taximeters or the like.

Of course. depending on the machines to be controlled, the apparatus may be arranged in a particular way and the various components may therefore be replaced by all other equivalents.

For example, if it is a question of controlling the speed of a continuously operating machine, the drum 17 could be constantly connected to any rotating member of the machine or else the toothed bar 13 could be constantly connected to a moving member. al ter of this machine. If it is a question of controlling the duration of operations carried out by the machine in a discontinuous manner without stopping this machine between operations, the toothed bar 13 must be set in motion only for the duration of these operations, for example. example thanks to the automatic clutch of the transmission which actuates the drum 17 at the start of the operation and the disengagement of this transmission at the end of the operation.
