Metal door for automobiles. The present invention relates to a metal door for automobiles.
The door according to the invention comprises a frame, several panel supports rigidly secured to this frame and a door panel, the edges of which are rigidly secured to said supports.
This construction is particularly strong and rigid, even in cases where the door panel presents a considerable curvature to conform to the bodywork on which the door is used.
In the accompanying drawing is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention FIG. 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a section on 2-2, fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section taken, by one of the hinges, along 3-3, fig. 1.
The door frame is made of four profiled bars 13 which are rigidly secured together so as to form a rectangle forming the door frame. These irons are Z irons and have the wings, extending in opposite directions, 14 and 15. To the outward facing wings 14 at the bottom and sides of the frame are attached the panel supports. 17 which are Z-bars having the outwardly extending portions 18 which, together with the Z-bars 13 of the frame, form edges on the sides and bottom of the door.
The door panel, 10, which is stamped or forged to the desired curvature and shape to match the curvature of the bodywork, has on its side edges and bottom edge flanges 12 which are folded over over the fenders 19 , extending laterally from parts 18 of the panel supports 17. At the upper edge of the door, the angle iron 20 is secured to the wing 14 of the Z-bar 13 of the door frame and the wing 21 of this angle iron 20 carries a finishing strip, 22, of U-shaped section, to which the inwardly turned rim 11, existing at the upper edge of the door panel 10, is rigidly secured.
The door frame, made of Cree Z 13 irons, forms a sort of pocket inside the door and a sheet of metal, 16, attached to the fenders, extending inwards 15 of said Z-shaped irons form the bottom of this pocket.
The hinges 23 are each provided with a rod 24 which extends through openings made in part 18 of the panel support 17 and the Z-shaped iron 13. The hinge is provided with a head, or shoulder, 25 fitting into a cavity or recess 28 which is formed in the reinforcing plate 27 applied to the inner surface of the portion 18 of the support 17, as shown in FIG. 3. A similar reinforcing plate, 26, is applied to the inner face of the Z-bar 13 and a tubular spacer, or spacer, 29 is placed between the plates 26 and 27 and around the rod 24 to. reinforce the construction of the door at this point. On the end of the rod 24, which passes through the Z-iron 13 and comes out on the outside, is screwed a nut 30.
It will be noted that the door hinge can be removed by unscrewing this nut 30, which is easily accessible, and it follows that the hinges can be fitted, or removed, once the assembly of the door is completed. and, in fact, after the door has been finished and enameled or painted.
This door is particularly strong and robust and this is due, in part, to the fact that a straight frame is used, the elements of which are rectilinear and which does not follow the curvature of the door panel. The Z-bars 13 are separate pieces, rigidly joined together to form the frame; this frame and the pocket base 16 can be made from a single stamped piece. This frame comprises rec tilinear Z-section members having wings which cover over the panel supports, to which they are attached. This provides a double thickness of metal at the points where stress is likely to be felt.
The hinge construction is particularly robust, since the groove of the door is reinforced at points immediately adjacent to the hinges, and, when the nut 30 is screwed fully onto the rod 24, the side walls of this groove are pulled against the ends of the tubular spacer, resulting in a very rigid construction. Although this frame is particularly robust and rigid and substantially entirely hidden inside the door, the hinge can nevertheless be easily removed, after the door has been assembled, by unscrewing the nut 30, which is accessible from the outside of the door. This is a considerable advantage from a manufacturing point of view.
This frame is of such a nature that it reinforces the door at the points where the hinges are applied, so as to prevent the deformation of the door by the forces transmitted to it by the hinges.
