Description

Process for aluminothermic welding of butt against each other workpieces. The invention relates to a process for welding butt against each other workpieces, in particular rails, on the aluminothermic route, which is known to be based on the fact that when a mixture of aluminum and metal oxide, for example iron oxide, be ignited (thermite) the metal oxide is reduced to hot liquid metal by the aluminum under very high heat generation, which is used for welding.

This a.luminothermal or alumino-genetic welding has so far generally been carried out either in such a way that the rails are pressed against one another, possibly after inserting an intermediate piece, and then the end faces are brought to welding heat by being encapsulated with aluminothermic metal and welded by upsetting , or such,

that the rails are laid with a certain gap and, while maintaining this gap, the aluminothermic metal pin is cast and fused with the rail material, in both cases before the aluminothermic BL '. indlung can be preheated in a form surrounding the joint.

The first procedure has the disadvantage that, for the heating that only follows from the outside, the are pressed firmly against one another without a gap; .so. not accessible to common rail surfaces on hot welding, even with preheating, a relatively large amount of the aluminothermic mass is required. Nevertheless, the central part of the considerable rail head cross-section in particular is not always brought to a uniform welding temperature sufficiently.

There is also the risk that the oxide layer, which is in any narrow gaps between the mutually clamped end faces of the rails BEZW. the rails and the insert formed during the va-rwarmung, is not completely dissolved by the aluminothermic casting compound.

The disadvantage of the second method, in which less thermite is used, is known to be. that one has the aluminothermic metal in the most stressed rail joint, which often does not have the same strength as the rail material.

To eliminate these disadvantages, the new method according to the invention consists essentially in the fact that the ends to be welded are laid with a certain distance from one another, while maintaining this distance, by pouring aluminothermic metal into a butt joint Form on hot sweat. brought and then welded by pressing together with displacement of this metal who the.

As a result, the two rail surfaces are freely accessible both in the event of preheating and in the aluminothermic treatment because of the gap between them, so that the entire joint surfaces both during preheating and during heating by the aluminothermic mass can be heated quickly and evenly.

It is therefore sufficient to use a smaller amount of aluminothermic material in relation to the known aluminothermic welding with mutually pressed joint surfaces to bring the rail ends to hot welding, which is important in economic terms. The oxide layer formed with any preheating is safely dissolved in the hot liquid thermite metal mass, as it is freely accessible from all sides.

When the rails are pressed together after the welding heat has been reached, the aluminothermic metal is pressed out of the joint, so that the welding point is only formed by rail material.

The present method can be carried out in the following manner: The rails are clamped in a clamping device of known type so that there is still a gap of about 10 mm between the rail ends. The joint is then covered with a mold in a known manner.

which is tamped and dried in two box-shaped halves of the usual kind from Nlebsand, and, for example, by means of a benzene blower, a flash of flame is sent through the mold, which evenly flushes the exposed lines around and scratches them. After the preheating is finished, the pouring takes place. the aluminothermal or aluminogenic mass.

which occurs between the exposed rails, dflä: clrerr and as a result they move quickly and. evenly burns sweat over its entire surface.

The rail ends are then pressed against each other in the middle of the lilemmv orrielrtun, whereby the alumino-thermal metal protrudes from the butt joint and the welding of the rails is stopped. The squeezed out; e: metal can emerge from the upper inlet opening of the mold.

After the end of the cracking the mold is destroyed and as aluminothermic metal in the sense of the invention are also understood such metals that are made from mixtures that are equivalent or similar in their - # Virl @ ure of the door - and which does not contain aluminum.
