Coaster brake. The present invention relates to a brake. back-pedaling, the accompanying drawing of which shows, schematically and by way of example, several embodiments applied to a bicycle.
Fig. 1 is a view of a click device, the. pedal and cover being removed to show the mechanism; Fig. 2 likewise shows a snap-in roller device; Fig. 3 is a section along A-A- of the device of FIG. 1; Fig. 4 is a section along B-B of the device of FIG. 2, which shows very schematically the attachment of a brake control tape.
On axis 1 of the crankset, fig. 1 and 3, a ratchet wheel 2 is wedged by means of a key or pin, not shown. The outer clamping nut 3 of the bottom bracket cup carries a shoulder 4 and on its threaded periphery a 30 rap crown worn. Between the shoulder 4 and the crown 30 rotates a drum 5, constituting an ex centric mounted on the locknut 3, around which passes the tape 6 for controlling the brake. The two ends of the tape 6 are attached to the same pin 7 to which the brake control rod 8 is coupled.
Inside the drum 5 is a pawl 9, pivoting about an axis 10 and able to engage with the wheel 2. A link 11 is freely mounted on the shaft 1, its foot carrying an oblique groove 12, in which can slide a stud 13 carried by the pawl 9. -On the other hand, the head of said link 11 is provided with two ears 14 and 15, suitably warped, so as to constitute small elastic pads rubbing on the wheel 2, while the big end itself is rubbing on the head of the crank 16 of the pedal, fig. 3, or on a dust cover carried by shaft 1 or by drum 5 and closing said drum 5.
When the crankset rotates forward, direction indicated by arrow 17, fig. 1, the connecting rod 11 tends to follow the movement and the obliquity of the groove 12 pushes back the pin 13 and pushes aside the pawl 9. The latter does not come into contact with the wheel 2 and therefore does not cause any noise.
When the crankset is turned backwards, the connecting rod 11 engages, on the contrary, the pawl 9 which engages with the teeth of the wheel 2. The eccentric drum 5 therefore turns itself with the crankset to come and occupy, for example, the position shown in broken lines, fig. 1. The control rod 8 is thus pulled out and the brake operates. The control will be adjusted, for example, by a tensioner 18.
So that the axis 10 does not have to withstand all the braking force, a stop 19 is provided against which the heel of the pawl 9 bears.
The device of FIGS. 2 and 4 is analogous to that described above. However, instead of a ratchet, a roller 20 is used, the axis 21 of which slides in the groove 12 of the rod 11. When pedaling forward, arrow 17, the rod 11 pushes the roller 20 back into a cavity 22 forming a stop, provided on the internal wall of the drum 5. When pedaling backwards, the roller 20 is driven with the connecting rod 11 and ends, since the drum 5 is ex-centered, by getting stuck between the wheel 2 and this drum 5 ensuring the drive thereof.
The drum 5 and the wheel 2 have been shown provided with teeth, @de same as the roller 20, but the roughness of a rough casting would be sufficient.
The brake control is a little different from that previously described. One end of the tape 6 is directly attached to the caliper 23, of the brake by a bolt 24, while the other end is fixed to a pin 25 carried by the frame 26. The adjustment is made by moving the l 'axis 25. The latter could moreover form a ratchet winder drum and the adjustment would then be done only by rotation of said winder drum.
The devices described can be adapted to all brakes. It suffices to attach to the ru ban 6 a control by cable or rigid rods. Simultaneous control of the front and rear brakes can be easily achieved by providing a single cable connecting the two front and rear brakes and passing around the drum 5. The movement of the drum then drives the two ends of the cable and actuates the two brakes. .
It may be advantageous to line the periphery of the drum with iron so that the latter drives the tape by friction.
The brake object of the invention can be applied to the constitution of a freewheel for the bottom bracket, by mounting the pawl, or the roller, on the pedal wheel mounted freely on its axis, said axis being provided with the wheel to ratchet. This freewheel would have the advantage of not making any noise.
