Process for the preparation of 3,5-Diehlor-1-methylbenzene-2-carboxylic acid. There are various ways known to bezw to 4. 6-substituted Oxythionaphtenen. Thioindigo dyes lead, in particular, to the technically important 4-methyl-6-halogenoxythionaphtenes and their oxidation and condensation products. These paths differ in the choice of starting materials and, accordingly, in the sequence of actions. All previously known methods lead through numerous intermediate phases, the implementation of which offers technical difficulties in some cases.
A new process for the presentation of 4-methyl-6-chloroxythionaphten would be given if the 3rd 5-dichloro-1-methylbenzene-2-carboxylic acid would be made available. This can namely drive analogously to other o-halobenzoic acids according to known Ver, z. B. according to the D. R. P. 189 200 via the mercaptocarboxylic acid in the corresponding oxythionaphthene.
It has now been found that the previously unknown 3,5-dichloro-l-methylbenzene-2-carboxylic acid becomes an easily accessible body and thus a simple way of obtaining 4-methyl-6-chlorooxythionaphthene is given, if you start from the 3.5-dichloro-2-amino-l-methylbenzene, a compound that in some processes that are used to produce chlorinated o-tolui- dine, falls off as a by-product and has so far not found any major industrial use .
The subject of this patent is a process for the preparation of 3,5-dichloro-1-methylbenzene-2-carboxylic acid, which is characterized in that 3. 5-dichloro-2-amino-1-methylbenzene is diazotized, the diazo compound by action converted from copper cyanuric solution into 3.5-dichloro-2-cyano-1-methylbenzene and this saponified by the action of acidic saponifying agents.
Using the method according to patent specification 189 200, the route to 4-methyl-6-chlorogythionaphthene would be, for example, the following:
EMI0002.0002
It was not foreseeable that the specified reaction sequence can be carried out smoothly, since in the given starting material the amino group is di-o-substituted and even simple o-substitution, but even more di-o-substitution, has a reaction-inhibiting effect, and also saponification of such a type Substituted nitrile generally calls for interventions that make the molecule likely to be destroyed.
It has been shown, however, that the amino group can be exchanged for cyano surprisingly easily, whereas the saponification of the nitrile, however, requires special measures.
The advantage of the process is that a previously worthless starting material (waste product) can be used to good effect. Using the end product of the present process, the known and valuable 4,4'-dimethyl-6. 6'-dichlorothioindigo can be produced in a way that leads through intermediate phases that can be carried out easily technically. Example: 178 parts by weight of 3,5-dichloro-2-amino-1-methylbenzene are dissolved in 440 parts by weight of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 800 parts of hot water and then cooled to 0-10.
It is diazotized at this temperature with a concentrated aqueous solution of 69 parts by weight of sodium nitrite. The diazo solution is stirred at normal temperature into a solution of 89 parts by weight of copper cyanur and 135 parts by weight of potassium cyanide in 800 parts of water, while at the same time an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate is added to the extent that the mass remains weakly turmeric-alkaline.
The precipitate formed is sucked off and the 3. 5-dichloro-2-cyano-1-methylbenzene driven off. It passes over as a rapidly staring 01 and is sufficiently pure for further processing.
188 parts by weight of 3,5-dichloro-3-cyano-1-methylbenzene are boiled with 5300 parts by weight of 65% strength sulfuric acid for 24 hours with stirring on the reflux condenser. The reaction product is diluted with water to 10,000 parts by volume and the product which has separated out is filtered off. It is drawn out with soda solution. The residue, essentially 3. 5-dichloro-1-methylbenzene-2-carboxamide, is added to a new saponification operation.
The soda extract is acidified with hydrochloric acid. The 3,5-dichloro-1-methylbenzene-2-carboxylic acid which precipitates out is sufficiently pure for further processing. It is a white crystallized compound. In its pure state it melts at 151 o C.
