Description

F; ce premier stade de refroidissement reçoit en A la vapeur à condenser et l'eau chaude est extraite en C pour être utilisée;

3 du brevet nO 201941.

Method and device for ensuring intimate contact between two immiscible fluids.

The object of the present invention is, in general, to obtain intimate contact between two immiscible fluids of different densities to ensure, for example, the heat exchange between the two fluids and in particular to facilitate cooling. necessary for petroleum vapors in petroleum distillation through direct contact with water.

In the method according to the invention, the two fluids are circulated at the same time, at high speed in the same duct composed of curved elements arranged so that at the birth of each element the heavy fluid is injected into the part of the inlet section closest to the center of curvature of the element considered and that the light fluid is injected into the part of the inlet section furthest from this center of curvature, so that, under l The action of the centrifugal force created by the movement, these two fluids change their mutual position in the section along the curve, which causes their prolonged crossing which produces and maintains between them an incessant and renewed contact during their passage through the elements .

If one used a conduit comprising only one curved element, the time during which the two fluids would be in contact would generally be too short. We are therefore obliged to repeat the operation in a series of curved elements, turns for example.

But as the positions of the two fluids inside the section are, at the exit of the coil, inverses of oe that they were at the entry, it is necessary to provide means so that this crossing of the fluids is repeated at each curved element.

One of these means may consist in collecting separately each fluid at the outlet e of each curved element by means of two tubes which are connected to the inlet of the following curved element, so that the tube which takes birth, in the outlet section of an element, at the point closest to the center of curvature of this element, opens into the inlet section of the next element, at the point furthest from the center of curvature of this element , the other tubing being mounted in reverse order.

Another means can consist in directly joining two successive curved elements in such a way that, in their common section, the part of this section which constitutes the part closest to the center of curvature of the first element, constitutes on the contrary the most important part. farther from the center of curvature of the next element.

This process can be applied during all industrial operations in which it is necessary to ensure intimate contact between two fluids, for example, with a view to distillation, cooling or dissolution of gases, rectification or purification of oils, etc.

The process according to the invention applies particularly well to the calorific exchanges necessary in the fractional distillation with multiple effects, in particular in that of petroleum, as carried out, for example, according to the prior process of applicant disclosed in his Swiss patent n0 202234.

In this patent, provision is made for the petroleum to travel through a series of tanks operating at increasingly high temperatures and pressures so as to evaporate the hydrocabures in the order of their decreasing volatility, these tanks being heated, except the last or the last two, by the condensations of the vapors of the next reservoir in the direction of movement of the oil; the latent heat of evaporation of one fraction is thus used for the heating of another fraction, while, to also use the heat of liquid products, residues and condensates, reheaters arranged between two successive tanks are used .

In the accompanying drawings, given by way of example, FIGS. 1 to 9 represent different forms of devices allowing the application of the method according to the invention.

Several crossings between the two fluids can be ensured in a coil.

Thus in fig. 1, it can be seen that the fluid extracted at the bottom of the first turn at the upper interior part of the straight section of this turn by the tube a is injected at the lower exterior part of the straight section of the second turn and that the other fluid leaving the first turn through its lower outer part in h is injected into the upper inner part of the straight entry section of the second turn.

This arrangement can be replaced by a counter-curve inside the coil which changes the location of the concavity. This change of ooncavity gives rise to a centrifugal force in the opposite direction which moves the fluids relative to each other; thus at each change of concavity the fluids pass through each other exchanging their heat.

The corrugated tube according to fig. 9 works like Ull a coil made up of curves and counter-curves. The successive undulations alternately produce a concavity and a convexity on a given wall of the tube and each of them changes by 180 the direction of the centrifugal force; consequently, the dense fluid tends to be placed in the successive undulations sometimes on one side of the tube and sometimes on the other, the light fluid being held on the opposite side.

There is thus inside the tube an undulating movement in the opposite direction for each of the fluids, which causes for each undulation a shock between the two currents with penetration and intimate contact thus producing between the two fluids a real emulsion and therefore a good heat exchange.

Oil cooling devices by contact between the oil and the water injected into them can; present either in the case of a coil or in the case of corrugated tubes any suitable shape of cross section; however, it is preferable to lengthen the section along the direction of intersection of the fluids, that is to say according to the resultant of the forces acting on these fluids, by giving these tubes an oval shape.

In the case of a helical coil, the maximum dimension of the cross section must be found approximately according to the resultant of the centrifugal force and of the gravity. In the case of corrugated tubes, the cross section must lie in the plane of the corrugations, that is to say in the plane containing the center of curvature of the latter.

All direct contact cooling devices can be used to produce hot water or steam when the oil to be cooled is at a sufficiently high temperature; to achieve this result, the part of the coolers which produces the steam is preferably supplied with hot water. It is good to subdivide the cooling and to extract after each partial operation the hot water or the steam produced by injecting again water used for cooling. In this form, the hot water produced in an operation can be used as feed water for an earlier operation (compared to cooling the oil) at the start of the crane it is injected into the tube.

Fig. 3 shows a cooling device consisting of a corrugated tube with three successive cooling effects, usable for obtaining hot water; the oil enters the tube through A and is cooled by the hot water coming from the second cooling operation and taken in Ci by the pump B which delivers it in
F. This water completes heating in this first oil cooling operation and is extracted at C to be used in any desired manner.

I The extracted water is replaced immediately by colder water extracted from the same tube, produced by the third cooling operation and exiting in c2 to be delivered by the Bi pump in Fi immediately after the hot water extraction in C and on the opposite side of the tube section. This injection starts the second cooling operation. At the end of this second operation, that is to say in Ci, the hot water obtained is extracted which is reinjected in F at the beginning of the first operation as has been explained. The extraction carried out is compensated by injecting fresh water into F2 on the side of the tube opposite to C1 and just after this point.

The operation is repeated for the third time in F2 and the hot water is as previously extracted in C2 from the convex side of the end of a corrugation and delivered by the pump B1 to F1. The cooled oil exits the S-concave side and advances into a separator or purifier which purges it of entrained water.

The process can be used for the production of water vapor by oil cooling, using as cooling water at least one stage water heated in later stages. The water vapor is extracted after separation in a curved part of the duct on the inner side with respect to the center of curvature, after which the water vapor is purged from the liquid entrained in a centrifugal coil from which this liquid is brought to the 'cooling apparatus, each element of the duct having a section progressively increasing from the beginning of the stage considered until the first extraction of the steam, from which the cross section returns approximately to its original dimension.

The production of water vapor in oil cooling devices by direct contact can be carried out under pressure when the temperature of the oil allows it and for this purpose the two fluids are injected under pressure into the cooling device.

The devices applicable to the cooling of oil by direct contact with cooling water can also be used for the condensation of petroleum vapors produced by distillation. In this case, the section of the tube or of the coil must be gradually reduced to maintain the speed of the circulating fluid due to the condensation which greatly reduces the volume of the fluid.

The condensation allows, like the cooling, the use of the heat contained in the products which are cooled by producing hot water or steam; for the extraction of water vapor, the entrainment with it of non-condensed petroleum vapors must be avoided.

Fig. 4 shows a plan of a corrugated tube condensing device using the heat contained in petroleum vapors to produce hot water. In this apparatus the cooling is subdivided into four fractions; in the first, the water heated during the second cooling is extracted in C1 by the pump B to be reinjected in
F; this first cooling stage receives the steam to be condensed at A and the hot water is extracted at C to be used;

the second stage begins at the end of the first and receives as cooling water the water extracted in c2 after heating during the third stage, this water being discharged by
B1 to be reinjected into F1: this third stage starting at C receives the water heated during the fourth stage, which is extracted therefrom at C3 and is reinjected into F2 by B2; finally the fourth stage starting in c2 receives cold water in F3.

When it comes to using the heat contained in petroleum vapor for the production of water vapor, the extraction of the steam comes up against difficulties due to the possible entrainment of petroleum vapors. It cannot be expected that the centrifugal force produced by a curvature of the tube will determine a classification by density of the fluids in the cross section of the tube so as to allow the extraction of the major part of the water vapor without noticeable entrainment of vapor of water. oil; therefore, in order to be able to be used in practice, it is necessary to add to the apparatus a purifier which purges the vapor of the petroleum vapor and of the liquids which it may entrain.

Figs. 5 and 6 show in elevation and in plan an apparatus for condensing petroleum vapors with corrugated tubes where the heat contained in the vapors is used for the production of water vapor. Condensation and cooling take place in four stages; the first occupies the first part of the tube from the inlet of the steam to be condensed in A to the outlet of the water vapor produced in C. The cooling liquid used is hot water of the second stage, extracted in
Ci and reinjected by pump B at the inlet of the condenser in F.

The second cooling begins immediately after the end of the first by injection in F1 of hot water from the third stage, extracted from the device at 2 and reinjected by pump B1 into the device in Ft; the second stage ends in C3 where the third stage begins by injection in F2 of the water of the fourth stage separated at the extreme end of the apparatus in C3 to be reinjected by B2 in F2; the fourth stage begins at the end of the third c2 by injecting cold water into F3, this fourth stage occupying the rest of the apparatus.

The condensed and cooled oil exits in S to get to a separator which extracts the entrained water the water vapor is produced in the first stage by increasing the volume of the circulating fluid, while at the same time the condensation of petroleum vapors produce a decrease in this volume.

If all the heat transmitted from the oil to the water were limited to the latent heat of evaporation of the hydrocarbons and were used entirely in the evaporation of the cooling water, the volume contraction produced by the condensation of the oil would be greater. to its increase under the action of the evaporation of water whose latent heat of evaporation is greater, so that the total volume of the circulating fluid would decrease requiring a gradual decrease in the section of the tube along of the part occupied by the first stage if we want to maintain the speed of the circulating fluid. But in reality the treated petroleum vapor consists of several hydrocarbons which condense at different temperatures.

Consequently, for the successive production of the condensates. it is necessary to reduce the temperature of the less volatile hydrocarbons after their condensation, that is to say to transmit to the water the heat contained in the hydrocarbons both in the vapor state and in the condensate state and the heat specific thus removed from the condensates will increase the mass of water vapor formed. On the other hand, if the water injected into
F is not at the temperature of the vapor produced in this stage, it will be necessary to heat the water before producing its evaporation, so that the mass of vapor formed with a given quantity of available heat is reduced.

These circumstances modify in opposite directions the final result as regards the variation in volume of the whole of the fluid circulating in the first part of the tube, that is to say during the first stage. These phenomena must be taken into account to determine the variations in section along this part of the tube in order to keep the circulation speed more or less constant. The water vapor is extracted at the end of the first stage, that is to say in C. It entrains significant quantities of petroleum vapors which must be separated. The separation device of FIG. 5 comprises a vertical corrugated tube P in which circulates from bottom to top the water vapor to be purified leaving C and which receives at its upper part L an injection of hot water.

First-stage cooling feed water from pump B is used as hot water and this water is colder than water vapor and above all colder than petroleum vapor; there follows a condensation of the petroleum vapors favored by the contact facilities offered by the shape of the tube P and the vertical vapor stream which pushes and pulverizes the descending liquid; the shape of the tube frequently brings the petroleum vapor into contact with the water particles and with the cooler water vapor which rises at the same time as said vapor, which causes the condensation of the entrained petroleum vapors. At the same time, the cooling water injected in L partially evaporates, increasing the quantity of water vapor produced.

The liquefied petroleum is carried away largely by the liquid stream which descends, through the vapor stream, along the tube and returns to the apparatus at C. The remainder, carried by the water vapor in the state liquid, is finally extracted from this vapor in the centrifugal separator
II, the drainage tubes E of which pass the liquid into the pump B1 which returns it to the apparatus at F1, while the water vapor freed from petroleum is taken at H1.

The oil vapor separator P can be modified so that, over its entire height, different injections of water are carried out at the same temperature or at increasingly cold temperatures as one goes up. The separator can be replaced by any gas scrubber of known type or by an apparatus of the type carrying out simple rectification in the distillation operations.

The rectification columns described in patent No. 201941 allow the application of corrugated tubes to cause the contact of two non-target fluids of different densities flowing together in the tubes.

FIG. 7 shows in plan a coil coil using corrugated tubes and capable of being applied to the column of FIG. 3 of the above-mentioned patent. This coil comprises two corrugated tubes O and Ol followed by two bent tubes A and A1. The bent tube A joins the corrugated tube O to the corrugated tube Ol and the bent tube A1 joins the corrugated tube Ol to the corrugated tube occupying in the following turn the position of the tube O. The ser pentin is traversed by the steam to be rectified advancing in the direction of the arrows.

In I an injection of the rectifying liquid is carried out inside the coil. This liquid travels through the coil with the circulating vapor and the successive corrugations of the tube O cause the two fluids to cross frequently, -Lest sprays of the liquid by the vapor and the intimate contact of the particles ensuring the exchange of heat and the substitution of a part of the alcohol which vaporizes by an equivalent quantity of goes afraid of water which condenses, which determines the rectification of the vapor.

At the outlet of the tube O, the entrained liquid is separated by the bent tube A, the section of which
right presents one of the forms described before
laughter and he is collected by a canal
formed in the bent tube of oit; it is extracted through the E tube leading to this channel.

The connection of the corrugated tube Ol with the bent tube A1 acts in the same way as the connection between the tubes O and A with injection in Jl of the rectifying liquid.

Fig. 8 shows in plan another coil coil of the same applicable type
to the rectification column of fig. 3 of patent No. 201941. This coil differs from the previous one only by a greater extension of the bent tubes, A and = 1l.

Fig. 9 is a horizontal section through a stage of the distillation column of the type of FIGS. 4 and 7 of the same patent recalled above. The steam to be rectified coming from the lower stage enters the stage under consideration by the triangle A B C which is open and it enters by the vertical straight section
A B in the outer turn of the spiral forming the floor: it runs through the entire spiral
in the direction of the arrow to exit via S and follow a similar route upstairs.

The rectifying liquid coming from the upper stage is injected in I to be atomized and entrained by the stream of vapors to be rectified, which produces a rectification of the vapor in the corrugated tube F1; the separation takes place on the arc B1 El with new injection at El in the next outer coil, new spraying by the fluid circulating at the outlet of El and entrainment by this fluid. In the path El ilIl is thus obtained a rectifying effect for this fluid before the rectification carried out by the same rectifying liquid along I Dl as has been described.

The rectifying liquid continues its path and is separated on the arc Il Fl to be injected at F in the turn immediately outside the turn of the first injection
I Dl and we find in this turn and in the successive turns from the inside to the outside the same cycle of operations, so that the rectifying liquid circulates from the inside to the outside through the successive turns, while the steam to be rectified circulates from the outside to the inside over the entire length of the spiral, and at each new turn, these countercurrent fluids are brought into contact twice to ensure two new rectifications.

Finally, the rectifying liquid collected by the spoon E i is brought and injected into the lower stage as described in said patent.

Each new rectification of the vapor is done with an increasingly richer liquid, while the vapor presents an increasingly greater purity with constant depletion of the rectification liquid in its path in the opposite direction by successively rectifying more and more vapors poor. The rest of the operations are carried out according to the conventional procedure for the operation of rectification columns.
