Exhaust system for internal combustion engine. The invention relates to an exhaust device for an internal combustion engine.
It is known that the lubricating oil of internal combustion engines, in particular in the case of two-stroke engines supplied with a mixture of fuel and lubricant, partly passes into the exhaust device of these engines, hence it is expelled, while the engine is running, being dragged out by the exhaust gases.
When the engine is stopped, the oil which lines the walls of the exhaust system flows to the lowest point of the latter and if this device opens to the air at this point, it falls to the ground.
The arrangement of the exhaust device which constitutes the object of the present invention has for its object to prevent that the oil which is in this device can leave it when the engine is stopped, while allowing its evacuation during. running of the engine For this purpose, the exhaust device according to the invention comprises, at the place where it opens into the open air, a chamber swept by the exhaust gases and which communicates with the open air by a vertical duct, of short length, the inlet orifice of which, in the direction of the flow of said gases, is at a level higher than that of the lower part of this chamber.
Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawing show each schematically, by way of example, part of a particular embodiment of the exhaust device according to the invention.
The exhaust device of FIG. 1 comprises a box, the upper wall of which is crossed by a duct 1 bringing in the exhaust gases from the engine. This duct 1 opens into the chamber 2, formed by means of the box, at a level higher than that of the bottom 6 of this box. This bottom 6 is crossed by a very short vertical duct 8 projecting into the chamber 2 and opening into the open air through its orifice 5. The inlet orifice 4, in the direction of the gas flow of the gasket. duct 3 is at a level higher than that of the bottom 6 of the box, and the edge of this orifice has a sharp edge 7.
The device of FIG. 2 does not differ from that of FIG. 1 only by the fact that the supply duct 1 of the exhaust gases is blocked in the side wall of the box so that the edge of the gas inlet orifice in chamber 2 is flush with the upper face from the bottom 6 of the box.
In the device of FIG. 3, a duct 1 bringing in the exhaust gases has at its end a frustoconical widening of the same axis as this duct and closed by a frustoconical bottom 6 so as to form a chamber 2'-. A vertical duct of short length 3 passes through the bottom 6 so as to protrude inside the chamber 2 ', so that its inlet orifice 4 is at a higher level than that of the bottom 6. This duct 3 opens to the air through orifice 5 and the edge of orifice 4 has a sharp edge 7.
When the engine is operating normally, the exhaust gases, brought to chamber 2 or 2 'through duct 1, follow the path indicated by the arrows and after having swept the bottom 6 of this chamber 2 or 2' escapes. in the open air through duct 3.
When the engine is stopped, the oil which lines the walls of the pipe 1 ends up accumulating in the lower part of the chamber 2 or 21, but since the pipe 3 protrudes from the bottom of this chamber, the oil accumulated during the stopping of the engine in the chamber cannot penetrate into said duct 3. This duct 3 has moreover a length as short as possible, so that the oil, which could piss its internal face, cannot have sufficient volume to form a drop capable of being detached by its own weight.
The sharp edge 7 of the orifice 4 of the duct 3 prevents the oil, contained in the chamber 2 or 2 ', from being able to wet the external face of this duct 3 up to its top in order to then drain the along its internal face.
In this way, when the engine is stopped, the oil can no longer flow to the outside since it has to accumulate at the bottom of the chamber 2 or 2 '. When the engine is restarted, the exhaust gases sweep the bottom of this chamber and carry away the oil which has accumulated there. It is thus certain that the quantity of oil thus collected never becomes large enough so that a small excess, coming from the seepage along the wall of the duct 1, can cause the overflow of the oil - accumulated above. the entrance to the duct 3.
The device of FIG. 4 comprises a si lencieux having a chamber 82, the walls of which are lined with a material 9 capable of absorbing sound and into which the duct 1 leading to the exhaust gases emerges. The gases pass from the chamber 8 'to a chamber 2 =, arranged in the lower part of the silencer by a passage 10 which is not facing the outlet of the duct 1. The bottom 6 of the chamber 2' is crossed by a vertical duct 3 of short length projecting inside the chamber 22 and con formed and arranged as in the device of FIG. 1. This duct 3 opens to the air through orifice 5.
The upper wall of the chamber 22 is lined with a layer of sound-absorbing material 11, so that it can also contribute to reinforcing the effect of silence to be obtained.
