Description

B. in Ölsäure.

B. 2 bis 6 '/a, bevorzugt.

Process for the preparation of condensation products: The invention relates to the preparation n; U-like condensation products by the acidification of mixtures which contain higher fatty acids without hydroxyl groups.

When the starting materials are unsaturated, the products obtained are particularly suitable as drying ingredients for use in oil paints, varnishes, kernel oils, linoleum and d; Same where they: can replace drying oils in whole or in part. When the starting materials are saturated, the products obtained are suitable for use in e.g.

   B. quenching oils, plasticizers and the like.

It is known that oils or fatty acids containing hydroxyl groups, or unsaturated oils or fatty acids which have previously been converted by oxidation into oils containing hydroxyl groups or fatty acids, can be heated to temperatures of 260 to 300 in the presence of a few percent boric acid under reduced pressure . The products obtained in this way consist mainly of esters.

It is also known to heat fatty oils together with subordinate merygen fatty acids under similar conditions, a transesterification taking place while the short-chain fatty acids contained in the oil are distilled off. The products obtained in this way are glycerides.

It has been found that novel condensation products are obtained when mixtures of hydroxyl group-free higher fenic acids of the formula
EMI0001.0051
    and ketones of the formula
EMI0001.0053
where the radicals R represent aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals with 9 to 25 carbon atoms,

which can be the same or different (the latter kebones are also called fatty acid ketones), are heated to a temperature between 220 and 330 in the presence of a small amount of a catalyst,

until a considerable amount of free fatty acids and ketones has been converted into unsaponifiables with an average molecular weight that corresponds to the calculated molecular weight of a condensation product of at least three fatty acid molecules of the formula _
EMI0001.0080
where R has the above meaning. For practical purposes: Temperatures between 250 and 300 are preferred.

If necessary, a fraction of fine acids of low molecular weight can be distilled off from the reaction mixture in order to obtain a more unsaturated end product.

The fatty acids can be saturated; however, unsaturated ones are preferred.

D: 53. Heating can be carried out at atmospheric pressure with an inert gas such as nitrogen bubbled through the reaction mixture, but preferably under vacuum.

If .the reaction is carried out in a high vacuum, can; the reaction temperature often does not reach the range between 220 and 330 all at once, since the mixture can boil at a temperature lower than 220 during the first phase of the reaction, with fatty acids transitioning into the vapor phase together with volatile reaction products.

As the reaction proceeds, the concentration of the higher fatty acids in the mixture decreases and the boiling point of the mixture rises so that the temperature can gradually be increased.

In the latter case, the heating is preferably carried out under reflux of the fatty acids and higher-boiling compounds. In this way, a larger part of the starting material can be converted into the final condensation product.

The Fe, ttsäureverbindungen dLs starting material can consist of a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids, as it is z. B. can be obtained from a fatty oil or a mixture of fatty oils.

Fractions obtained by fractional distillation of tall oil, which consist mainly of fatty acids, are also suitable starting materials. It has already been suggested that tall oil or tall oil fatty acids be heated to temperatures above 330 without a catalyst.

Products obtained in this way have a lower iodine number than the starting material, while the products obtained from mixtures of tall oil fractions and ketones by the process of the invention, on the contrary, have an increased iodine number compared with that of the starting material.

Finally, the starting material can contain other components such as B. contain mono-, di- or triglycerides or resin acids. In such cases, the mixture should have a considerable and preferably a predominant content of higher fatty acids.

Such other components have a tendency to slow down the reaction, and too large proportions should be avoided. Even if they have drying properties or develop such properties during heating, the content of other ingredients should preferably not be higher than the content of fetal acids.

In the above formulas, the aliphatic hydrocarbon radical R with 9 to 25 carbon atoms represents a preferably saturated or, better still, unsaturated alkyl group with 17 to 21 carbon atoms.

When R represents an unsaturated alkyl group, the group can e.g. B. hold only one double bond ent such. B. in oleic acid. In order to obtain products with good drying properties, it is desirable to have at least a proportion of compounds with unsaturated alkyl groups, which contain two or more double bonds, in the starting mixture.

Examples of such alkyl groups are those in L, inoleic acid, linolenic acid or the highly unsaturated; contain fatty acids found in oils from marine animals.

The temperature used and the duration of heating, as well as the amount of unsaponifiable material that can be achieved, depend to a certain extent on the nature of the starting material. If fatty acids with a fairly low iodine number are used, heating at high levels can be used Tem temperatures are carried out for a long time and a high content of unsaponifiable, z. B. 70 to nearly 10011/0; can be obtained. If of fatty acids with a relatively high iodine number, e.g.

   B. over 150, it may be desirable to stop the heating earlier, since gelation can occur; the Ge content of unsaponifiables can then be lower, z. B. 40 to 600/0. For the same reasons, it is sometimes preferred to mix fatty acids of different types before reacting them in order to allow the highly unsaturated fatty acids to condense more completely in one operation.

On the other hand, it may be desirable, when starting from fatty acid mixtures containing individual acids of different types, to fractionate the original mixture, e.g. B. by distillation, or the more volatile and less saturated fatty acids during the condensation reaction tode: still (the reflux column being kept at a suitably high temperature for this purpose) in order to obtain a better drying product.

The degree of conversion of the starting mixture into unsaponifiable substances of the specified properties can vary within wide limits, depending on the intended use of the condensation products according to the invention. In certain cases, a degree of conversion of 20 to 3011/10 will suffice, while in other cases a degree of conversion of 30 to 401/9 will be preferred.

The fatty acids used as starting materials can in individual cases in the usual way. -r way to have been refined.

The catalyst used in the process of the invention can, for. B. phosphoric acid, boron or preferably an oxygen-containing boron compound. Preferred inorganic boron compounds are boric acid and boron oxide. Boric acid salts, such as B. alkali or, preferably, ammonium pentaborate can also be used.

Borax however shows me one; low activity. Boron compounds with oxidizing properties are not preferred.

Preferred organic boron compounds are boric acid esters, such as trimethyl borate, triethyl borate, mannitol borate, the mixed anhydride of boric acid and acetic acid or the mixed anhydride of boric acid and higher fatty acids, the z. B. from a fatty oil such as peanut oil.

The catalyst can ger on a suitable Trä, z. B. a silicon dioxide such as kieselguhr, diatomaceous earth or silica gel, are used. The catalyst can be dissolved or suspended in water and added to the support; be set; the mixture is then dried in an oven. The content of catalyst can vary within wide limits, e.g.

   B. between 0.1 and 10 Gewich, tsprozent d es In general, a catalyst content of a few percent by weight, z. B. 2 to 6 '/ a, preferred.

The process is preferably carried out in a reaction vessel which is provided with a reflux column. The reflux column can be heated or cooled in such a way that the fatty acids and other higher-boiling products are returned and the water of reaction and other volatile products and gases are distilled off.

Water and other volatile products can be condensed in a cooled receiver together with entrained higher-boiling products.

The mixture in the vessel is heated to temperatures between 220 and: 330. It is desirable to keep the glass reaction mixture at least during the last part d. Keep the reaction time at a temperature between 250 and 300.

The reaction can be carried out at atmospheric pressure in a stream of an inert gas such as nitrogen. Preferably, however, either a vacuum is applied or the process is carried out in the presence of an inherent, water-immiscible solvent.

The catalyst can be mixed with the starting material or added to the reaction vessel during the heating process; it can also be installed in the reflux column.

The reflux column can be packed with such. B. coils, Raschig rings or the like, will be seen ver. It can also be adjusted so that some of the fatty acids can distill off.

After de heating has ended, unchanged fatty acids, if still present, can be removed from the reaction product using a suitable solvent, such as. B. alcohol, are extracted. The fatty acids can also be removed from the reaction product by vacuum distillation. The residue obtained after extraction or distillation is the desired product.

The reaction mixture is preferably filtered before or after the above-mentioned treatment with a solvent before or after distillation, washed with water to remove the catalyst, and dried under vacuum.

If the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent which is immiscible with water, one having a boiling point higher than 130 and lower than 300 is preferably used. During the heating process, the solvent which descends from the vessel drags the water developed during the reaction with it.

The abde.stillierenden solvent and: with dragged water vapor go through a cooler to a suitable receiver, in which they separate into two layers; the condensed solvent is returned to the reaction vessel.

Suitable solvents are xylene with a boiling point of 135 to 145, with which the heating can be carried out at temperatures up to 260, tetrahydronaphthalene with a boiling point of 205 to 215, with which the heating can be carried out up to 295, and decahydronaphthalene with boiling point 184 to 191, with which the heating up to 290 can be carried out.

Other suitable solvents are petroleum fractions boiling above 200. The distillate separated from the return or the product obtained from the alcohol extract (see above) can be re-used as the starting material for further treatments, as it mainly consists of unchanged starting material.

If the reaction is so advanced that there is little starting material in the reaction mixture, it is often unnecessary to add this remainder. remove.

The residue obtained under the reaction conditions described is the main product. If the starting material contains unsaturated fatty acids, the residue shows better drying properties than the corresponding glycerides, and it has lower volatility and increased viscosity compared to the fatty acids contained in the starting material.

These changes in properties become more apparent the longer and to the higher the temperature. The analysis data show: the formation of a considerable amount of unsaponifiable matter, which differs from the known ketones.

It has been found that this unsaponifiable substance is mainly responsible for the good drying properties and shows excellent film-forming properties.

According to the process according to the invention, condensation products can be obtained which have a considerable content, preferably at least 40%, of unsaponifiables, a low acid number and saponification number,

have an increased Wijs iodine number compared to the starting material and a high average molecular weight.

If the Wijs iodine number is 100 or more, the condensation products have drying properties. They have a molecular structure with at least three alkyl groups similar to those found in the fatty acids of unsaturated oils.

If the products obtained by the process according to the invention have a Wijs iodine number of 100 or higher, they can be used as a substitute for drying substances, such as drying oils, varnishes or alkyds, in:

the paint, varnish or linoleum industry and allied industries.

The new products can be mixed with the usual sikkati'ven based on cobalt, lead or manganese; they can be diluted with turpentine oil, white spirit and / or other volatile solvents to the desired viscosity :.

A good substitute for boiled linseed oil could e.g. B. obtained in that egg according to the invention hergesitelltes condensation product with a mixture. of turpentine oil and white spirit in a ratio of 1: 1. Small amounts of siccative are sufficient to obtain shorter drying times than those of a good boiled linseed oil.

    With 0.1 / o cobalt, calculated on the condensation product, z. B. 240 minutes is required to obtain a dust-dry film and 300 minutes for complete drying. The weight gain on drying in air was higher for the undiluted condensation product than for linseed oil stand oil of the same viscosity;

it showed great affinity for oxygen, although the product was obtained from soybean oil fatty acids with a much lower iodine number than that of linseed oil.

The hardness of the film was measured by the Sward's method; It was found that it was considerably higher than that of a film made of boiled linseed oil and the same as that of a film made of a 21/2 fatty maleic resin varnish. The film was more resistant to water and was thinned; sulfuric acid than films made from linseed oil and some oil varnishes.

Zinc white paints made from the condensation products showed no signs of thickening.

In the following example, the specified temperatures relate to the metal bath surrounding the reaction vessel. The temperature within the reaction mixture was lower, about 20 to 30 during the initial stage and about 10 during the final stages of the reaction.

Example Of the fatty acids in peanut oil, 12.4% of mainly saturated fatty acids were distilled off in vacuo. 248 g of the residue (acid number 191.8, saponification number 195.8, iodine number 122.9) were heated to 330 for 10 hours in the presence of 20 g of magnesium oxide in a known manner to obtain the keto: ns.

After washing out with dilute sulfuric acid to decompose the magnesium soaps and washing with neutrals with water, the ketone had an acid number of 3.0, a saponification number of 3.5, an iodine number of 126.8 and a carbonyl number of 86.1.

70 g of this ketone and 40 g of peanut fatty acids were heated to 290 in 3 hours with 2% boric acid in a vessel equipped with a reflux column,

Maintained at this temperature for 41/2 hours with reflux of the fat condensate and removal of the water of reaction and then heated for 1 hour while collecting the condensation in the receiver. The residue weighed 97 g without boric acid (acid number 1.5, saponification number 14.1, iodine number 168.5) and dried siccativized in 21/2 days to form an elastic film.
