The present invention relates to a transmission with brake and freewheel incorporated in a hub, in particular for cycles, mounted on a fixed axle via bearings, one of which at least is carried by a support screwed on the axis.
The object of the invention is to enable the support to be locked after adjustment, in order to ensure its retention as well as that of the bearings during tests and handling prior to assembly, for example, on a cycle.
The transmission according to the invention comprises for this purpose a locking element consisting of a lock nut, screwed onto the axis and completely embedded in an annular housing formed between the axis and an axial tubular extension of the support, directed towards the exterior of the transmission, this blocking element being in abutment against the support to block it on the axis relative to the hub and to the brake and to maintain the alignment of the bearings.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the transmission which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1. Is an elevational view, in partial longitudinal section, of said embodiment, in which the device for adjusting and locking the support is adapted to a two-speed transmission and brake incorporated in a cycle hub , and fig. 2 shows in perspective the support and its locking device.
The fixed axle 11 of the hub is mounted for example on the rear fork of a cycle. The rotation of an anchoring sleeve 12 screwed onto the axis is prohibited by an anchoring arm 13 held against the sleeve by a nut 14.
The anchor arm is fixed to the fork by a conventional clamp 16. On a threaded bush of lower ratio 17, mounted with gentle friction on the axis 11, is screwed a clutch nut of lower ratio 18 which can come into contact with a corresponding clutch surface 19 of hub 21: and s' get out of it.
The lower gear threaded bush 17 carries rolling balls 23 on which a higher gear threaded bush 22 rotates. A higher gear clutch nut 24 screwed onto the upper gear socket can come into contact with a clutch surface. 26 from the hub and release it.
The hub is carried by bearing balls 27 and 28 housed in ramps respectively arranged on the ratio bush, upper 22 and on a brake cone 29. The brake cone is fixed to the anchor sleeve 12 or to one piece with him.
A series of stacked brake discs 31 are alternately keyed to the hub 21 and to the anchor sleeve 12; a keyed <B> pressure </B> plate 32 sliding on the sleeve 12 makes it possible to press the stack of discs against the cone 29 when it is moved from its rest position defined by a ring 33 mounted on the sleeve.
A device for braking the rotation of the nuts comprises a coupling element 34, freely mounted on the brake pressure plate 32 and slidably connected by keying to the lower ratio nut 18, and a coiled braking element 36.
A second braking device comprises a coupling element 37 which rotates freely on the nut 24 and has a sliding connection with: the lower ratio nut 18, and an upper ratio braking element 38 helically wound. This second positive device brakes the upper gear nut and the parts of the selection and indexing mechanism which are connected to it.
The selection and indexing mechanism, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 39, is associated with the upper gear nut; it allows the driver to cause or prohibit the engagement of the upper gear nut on the hub. This mechanism is described in detail in Patent No. 369375 in the name of the proprietor.
The threaded bushings are driven at their respective speeds from a drive element 41 comprising a pinion 42 and a ring gear 43 fixed to a ring 44 integral with the end of the upper gear bush.
A satellite carrier ring 46 attached to the end of the lower gear bush is fitted with a number of pivots 48 on which satelites 47 rotate which mesh crown 43 and a planetary gear 49 described later. A counter-cone 51 maintains the ends of the pivots 36.
A pinion support 52 is screwed onto the left end part of the axle 11 (fig. 1). This support consists of a body 53 screwed onto the axis, provided with a radial flange 54 and a tubular extension 59. At the periphery of the flange 54 is formed the internal ramp 56 of the rolling balls 57 interposed between the flange and counter-cone 51.
The planetary gear 49 is fixed, for example by brazing, to a guide extension 58 made in one piece with the body 53 of the pinion support. For reasons of manufacturing cost, the sun gear 49 and the guide extension 58 are generally in one piece, but for convenience in the description they will be considered as two distinct entities, fixed one with respect to the other, in the remainder of the description.
The tubular extension 59 of the body 53 forms an annular gap between it and the threaded end part of the shaft. The front end of the protrusion 59 is provided with teeth 61 that a locking nut 62 plate against the fork during assembly of the hub so as to secure the pinion support 52 to the axle, despite the reaction forces exerted during of the drive by the gear train 43, 47, 49 and during braking.
Against the body 53 of the pinion support 52 is blocked a lock nut 63 screwed onto the axle in the annular gap left free by the tubular extension. The axial size of the lock nut 63 should preferably be less than the depth of the annular extension 59 so that the lock nut is completely embedded in the annular gap:
thus it is not necessary to use a special type washer, which would be the case if the lock nut protrudes and it is necessary to interpose a washer bearing on the cone 52 between the cone and the fork. Notches 64 made in the end face of the locknut 63 allow it to be screwed in using a suitable tool. The parts are assembled in the arrangement shown in fig. 1.
The pinion support 52 is screwed onto the axle until it exerts a force on the balls 57 which they transmit in a chain in the axial direction, all along the brake hub, to the rolling balls 23, 27, 28 and 57. This axial force is predetermined at a value sufficient for the rolling balls to bear correctly on their respective ramps and to be centered in order to absorb the forces which they undergo under suitable conditions.
For the transmission to function properly it is essential that the initial alignment be perfect and that it be maintained despite the handling to which the hub undergoes during testing and transport before mounting on a cycle. The adjustment is maintained by the lock nut 63 screwed onto the axis in the annular housing left free by the extension 59 and brought into abutment against the body 53 which it immobilizes.
The possibility of locking the support on the axle enables the axial and central centering loads of the bearings to be adjusted in the workshop, by means of instruments which are not usually available outside. The brake or the transmission can be actuated subsequently without risk of. decentring of the bearings following a displacement of the support 52 under the action of the reaction forces exerted by the gear train, because the lock nut 63 worm rustes the pinion cone in the correct position.
During the subsequent assembly of the transmission in the rear fork of a cycle, the teeth 61 are pressed by the locking nut 62 against one of the faces of the fork, but the lock nut does not intervene then and its setting cannot therefore be changed accidentally.
The blocking of the support by the support of the teeth ensures the transmission to the fork of the forces exerted by the sun gear 49 on the pinion and prevents the rotation of the support. It is obvious that the transmission of the force to the fork is only ensured by the teeth if the lock nut is completely embedded in the tubular extension 59.
The function of the locknut once the transmission is attached to the fork of a cycle is somewhat different from that provided during transport. During the drive, the axial reaction of the mechanism is directed outwards and it is therefore captured by the stop of the teeth against the fork and the support of the lock nut on the axis. When braking, an even higher axial reaction is exerted on the bearing support through the gear train and tends to screw the support 52 towards the mechanisms.
However, any movement of the support would cause subsequent operational disturbances as a result of the misadjustment of the axial and radial forces on the bearings. The lock nut then intervenes to lock the pinion support in its correct axial position. Incidentally, it can be noted that a reversal of the direction of the axis threading would result in a permutation of the tendencies of the support to screw and unscrew.
