Description

      Le dessin représente, à titre d'exemple, une forme  d'exécution de l'installation    la     fig.    1 est une vue en élévation générale repré  sentant un véhicule utilisant une installation de com  mande de frein suivant la forme d'exécution ;  la     fig.    2 est une vue en bout de l'installation re  présentée sur la     fig.    1 ;  la     fig.    3 est une vue partielle agrandie, en partie  en coupe et en partie en élévation, de l'installation;  la     fig.    4 est une vue semblable à la     fig.    3, mais  représentant les éléments dans une position diffé  rente ;

Brake control installation The subject of the present invention is a brake control installation.

The object of the present invention is to obtain a relatively inexpensive brake control installation, more compact than conventional installations and which has improved control characteristics.

It is characterized in that it comprises at least one dual-action fluid pressure motor, a source of pressurized fluid and a control device for sending the fluid selectively to the opposite sides of this motor to apply. or suppress a braking force, this motor comprising a spring under tension, and operating in response to the introduction of the same pressure coming from the source and applied to its opposite sides to exert a force applying the brakes, the force of the spring adding to the force of the fluid to exert the braking force, this spring being able to operate in such a way as to apply a braking force: during a pressure drop on both sides of the engine.

      The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation in FIG. 1 is a general elevational view showing a vehicle using a brake control installation according to the embodiment; fig. 2 is an end view of the installation shown in FIG. 1; fig. 3 is an enlarged partial view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the installation; fig. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3, but representing the elements in a different position;

fig. 5 is a diagram of a pneumatic circuit in a position in which the brake control is in the brake release position; fig. 6 shows the circuit in a position in which the control device has applied the brakes; fig. 7 represents the position of the circuit for applying the parking brake; fig. 8 represents the braking position of the control device when there is no more pressure in the circuit.

In fig. 1 is shown the chassis 10 of a vehicle comprising an axle 12 suspended from the frame sis by .l'intermediate a stack of conventional springs 14 and a link 16 formed by a U-bolt. Wheels 18 in contact with the ground are mounted on the axle and brakes 20 on the wheels are controlled by: shafts 22 extending from the brake backing plates and journalled on supports 24 supported by the axle.

The shafts 22 are connected to control levers 26 actuated by the motors 28 mounted on consoles 24. The motor 28 comprises a cylinder 30 comprising a base 32 fixed to the console 24 by bolts 34. The cylinder comprises a part 36. forming a cover and between this part and the base 32 is tightly clamped the outer periphery 38 of a flexible diaphragm of rubber or similar material, 40, which forms part of a piston 41 placed inside of the cylinder.

The radial inner portion 42 of the diaphragm is clamped between two central tubes 44 and 46 extending through the center of the inner cylinder so that the diaphragm 40 divides the cylinder into two pressure-tight chambers 48 and 50. A member 52 in the form of a cup cooperates with diaphragm 40 to complete .piston 41. Cup 52 has a radial outer cheek 54 which is fixed in a sealed manner on diaphragm 40 by bolts 56 and by a clamping ring 58.

A push bar 60 is anchored to the inner central part of the cup 52 and extends through a guide tube 46 to the outside of the cylinder 30 where it is connected to the brake lever 26 by means of 'a yoke 62. A bellows 64 of the dust-tight type is placed between the bar 60 and the cylinder 30. The underside of the cup 52 is exposed to atmospheric pressure through a clearance 66 formed between the guide tube 46 and the bar 60, this play being sufficient to allow the lateral movements of the bar 60 which may be made necessary by the: oscillation movement of the brake lever 26 around its pivot.

The effective area of the piston 41 exposed to the pressure of the chamber 48 is determined by the entire diameter of the cylinder 30, while the effective area of the piston exposed to the pressure of the chamber 50 is determined by this diameter minus the area of the cylinder. the central part of the piston which is subjected to atmospheric pressure through the wise passage 66. The chambers 48 and 50 are respectively provided with fittings 68 and 70 on which are fixed pressurized air pipes 72 and 74 which are connected to a common source of pressurized air, such as a pressure tank 76.

Taps 78 and 80 are placed respectively on the pressure pipes 72 and 74 and serve to introduce and discharge the pressurized air going to the chambers 48 and 50 or coming from these chambers. The controls of these taps are shown schematically in, fig. from 5 to 8 in the form of a pedal P and a hand lever L, the dotted lines going to the valves representing appropriate throttles or circuits which are interposed. Three coil springs 82, 84 and 86 are placed in the chamber 48 and are compressed between the cheek 54 of the bowl and an end wall of the cylinder 30.

These springs are shown schematically in FIGS. from 5 to 8 by a single spring S.

In service, it can be assumed that the motor 28 is initially in the release position shown in FIGS. 3 and 5, position according to which the pressure in the chamber 48 is the atmospheric pressure because the valve 78 is in the discharge position and pressurized air has been sent into the chamber 50 from the reservoir 76 by the 'Intermediate valve 80. The piston 41 is held to the left (observing the drawings) against the op position of the springs 82, 84 and 86 tablets (res out S) and the push bar 60 is in its position. withdrawal position.

To apply the brakes, the operator of the vehicle presses the pedal P to move the valve 78 and make it assume the position shown in FIG. 6 according to which pressurized air is forced into chamber 48 which equalizes the pressures on the opposite sides of piston 41. Because the effective area of the piston exposed to the pressure of chamber 48 is greater. to that which is exposed to the pressure of the chamber 50, the piston moves to the right (observing the drawings) and advances the push rod 60 which switches the brake lever 26 in order to apply the brakes.

The compressed spring S exerts: on the piston 41 a driving force which is added to that of the pressurized air.

Due to the fact that the spring S is formed by three springs 82, 84 and 86, it exerts a high braking force in addition to the force of the compressed air; this makes it possible to maintain the diameter of the piston 41 of the engine 28 at a relatively low value. For example, in experimental models an overall diameter of about 215 mm has been shown to be sufficient. It is envisioned that in more advanced models this diameter will be even smaller.

In order to release the brakes, the operator releases the pedal P to return the valve 78 to the discharge position of FIG. 5, so that the pressure in the chamber 48 is reduced, after which the pressure prevailing in the chamber 50, which has been held by hand, again pushes the piston 41 to the left against the opposition of the spring S, which backs up push bar 60 and brake lever 26. It should be noted that during the cycle involving applying and releasing the brakes, no air escapes from the brake. room 50 to the atmosphere. The only air that escapes to the atmosphere is that which has been introduced into chamber 48 to apply the brakes.

This way, each time the brakes are applied and released, only a minimal amount of air escapes from the system.

To apply the parking brakes, the operator operates the hand lever L to bring the valve 80 to its discharge position whereby the pressurized air in the chamber 50 is released. Thereafter, the spring S relaxes and pushes the udder 41 to the right, which advances the push bar 60 and tilt the brake lever 26 in order to apply the vehicle brakes. To return the brakes to the release position, the operator returns the lever L to operate the valve 80 so that pressurized air is again introduced into the chamber 50 from the pressure tank 76.

This moves the piston 41 to the left against the opposition of the spring S, so as to recoil the push bar 60 and release the brakes. Again, air escapes from the system only on one side of piston 41.

Should the air pressure in the system completely fail or become dangerously low, the brakes would be applied automatically, as shown in fig, 8. If the pressure in the system drops unexpectedly, the brakes will be applied automatically. The pressure in the chamber 50 will drop by such an amount that the spring S will automatically relax to advance the piston 41 and the push bar 60 to the right by tilting the brake lever 26 and applying the brakes. The system is thus in the safety position in the event of a fault.

The pneumatic circuit and the valves shown in fig. 5 to 8 are for illustration only. The controller is intended for use in other types of circuits. For example, instead of equalizing the pressures in chambers 48 and 50 to apply the brakes, one could use pneumatic circuits in which the pressure would be partially or completely released: in chamber 50 and either partially or completely applied in chamber 48. With this arrangement, the diameter of piston 41 and the overall diameter of the drive can be reduced even more than with the particular circuit shown.

When a vehicle is maneuvered in heavy traffic, particularly in city traffic, the brakes are applied frequently and this tends to lower the air pressure in the brake control system. With the present installation, as indicated above, a minimum of pressure is lost with each application and release of the brakes, which reduces pressure losses. The naked .rete force of the piston 41 on the spring S is sufficient to allow a considerable reduction in pressure in the installation before the spring automatically begins to apply the brakes.

At the same time, as long as there is sufficient pressure in the installation to retain the spring S, the pressure is also sufficient to apply the brakes in the normal way due to the differences between the effective surfaces of the piston 41.

The exterior physical characteristics and shape of the engine 28 are such that it can be mounted on conventional vehicle equipment without the need to modify either the mounting consoles or the brake control linkage. with which the: control device is associated.

4. Installation according to .la claim and .la under claim 1, characterized in that the spring is housed in the chamber for which the exposed surface of the piston is the largest. 3. Installation according to claim and sub-claims 1 and 2 for a vehicle, characterized in that a push bar is connected to the piston and extends outside the cylinder where it is connected to a member of actuation of the vehicle brakes, and in that the spring is in contact with an end wall of the cylinder and with the piston. 4. Plant according to claim and, sub-claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the piston comprises a flexible diaphragm dividing the cylinder into two chambers, in that the cylinder carries a central guide tube through which the push bar s 'extends outside the cylinder, the radial inner part of this diaphragm being fixed in a sealed manner around the tube, and the part of the piston placed facing the tube being exposed to atmospheric pressure,: so that the surfaces of the piston exposed to the pressures prevailing in the chambers are different.
