Fungicidal composition The present invention relates to a novel fungicidal composition containing, as essential ingredient, a 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonamide having the general formula
EMI0001.0004
where X is chosen from the group formed by R 1 -N R 2 morpholyl and piperidyl, R 1 and R 2 being selected from the group formed by the hydrogen atom and the alkyl, aralkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl and cyclohexyl radicals.
Damage to rice crops by fungi and pests has been a serious problem so far. Various compounds have already been proposed to solve this problem, only a few of which are currently used. For the treatment of rice disease caused by the fungus Piricularia oryzae, Bordeaux mixture, which is the most popular and effective fungicide, cannot be used effectively because it decreases the harvest.
That is why it is said that organic mercury compounds, for example phenylmercury acetate, etc., are the only ones which are effective and usable for this purpose. However, one cannot avoid certain difficulties such as the high toxicities which accumulate with regard to humans and domestic animals, the important phytotoxicities and the high cost.
The present inventors have made extensive research on fungicidal compounds effective against various plant pathogens, particularly against those of the rice plant, and have found that quinoxaline derivatives such as described above are extremely effective against plant diseases, such as rice disease caused by Piricularia oryzae, bacterial leaf rust of the rice plant, leaf mold of tomato, grapevine anthracnose,
the spots on the leaves of sugar beets produced by the fungus Cercospora.
Therefore, the aim of the invention is to provide novel fungicidal compositions containing 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonamide or its derivatives, which are as effective as the fungicidal compounds of the classics and exhibit low toxicities.
Other advantages of the invention will emerge from the following description.
The compounds which can be used in the present invention, and represented by the general formula given above are unknown in the literature and can be obtained by synthesis, for example by sulphonating 2,
3-dihydroxyquinoxaline with at least 90% sulfuric acid or fuming with sulfuric acid to give 2,3-dihydroxyquinoxaline-6-sulfonic acid,
then chlorinating the sulfonated product with phosphorus pentachloride to obtain 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonyl chloride and reacting the resulting chloride with ammonia or a suitable organic base in aqueous or non-aqueous conditions aqueous to finally give the desired compound, 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonamide or its derivatives.
In the general formula given above, X is chosen from the group formed by
EMI0002.0001
morphoryl and piperidyl. In the radical
EMI0002.0004
R 1 and R 2 can be chosen, respectively, from the group formed by the hydrogen atom; the alkyl radical, preferably a lower alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, for example methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, and the like radicals; the aralkyl radical such as benzyl, phenethyl and the like radicals; the phenyl radical;
the substituted phenyl radical having at least one of lower alkyls, lower alkoxy and halogen, and the like; and the cyclohexyl radical.
The fungicidal compositions of this invention which can be used in agriculture are, for example, those which contain as active compound: (1) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonamide, (2) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-monomethylamide , (3) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon- monoetylamide, (4) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonanono-n-propylamide, (5) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon- monoisopropylamid, (6 ) 2,
3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-mono n-butylamide, (7) 2,3, dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-monoisobutylamide, (8) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-dimethylamide, (9) 2,3- dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-diethylamide, (10) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-di-n-propylamide, (11) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-diisopropylamide, (12) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline -6-sulfon-di-n-butylamide, (13)
2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonanilide, (14) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-ortho-chloroanifde, (15) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-meta-chloroanilide, (16) 2,3 -dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon para chloroanilide, (17) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonmorpholide, (18) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfonpiperidide, (19) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-ortho- toluidide, (20) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-metatoluidide, (21)
2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-para-toluidide, (22) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-cyclohexylamide, (23) 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-metamethoxyanilide, (24) 2,3 -dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-phenethylamide. The compounds which are used in the present invention are superior to conventional fungicides in that they exhibit very low toxicities and can be used safely.
For example, the LD 50 value of the acute oral toxicity (mouse) of 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-dimethylamide is greater than 1000 mg / kg.
The compounds are advantageously used in the form of dust or wettable powder as fungicidal compositions for agriculture. To prepare the dust, at least one of said compounds may be mixed and ground with at least one of several suitable solid diluents such as talc, kaolin, bentonite, clay, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite and activated charcoal powder, following a concentration of the essential compound between 0,
1 and 5% by weight. To prepare a wettable powder, at least one of said fungicidal compounds as an essential ingredient can be mixed with a wetting agent and at least one of several powdered excipients, which are the same compounds as the diluents used in the case of the preparation of the powder. dust, and they can be mixed well and ground together.
In this case, the desirable concentration of the essential ingredient is between about 10 and 90% by weight. Of course, in both cases of the preparation of the dust and the wettable powder, the concentration of the essential ingredient can be increased or decreased depending on the purpose.
Or, said compounds of this invention can be used in emulsion form, if desired.
In addition, the fungicidal compositions can be prepared by being mixed with other substances such as insecticides, miticides, nematocides or herbicides. In addition, they can also be used as additives to fertilizers.
This invention will be illustrated with the aid of the following examples. In these examples, the parts and percentages are given by weight, unless otherwise indicated. Example 1 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-dimethyl-amide and tale are mixed well and ground together in a proportion of 1:
99 by weight, and a dust preparation having a concentration of 1% by weight of the essential ingredient was obtained.
Example 2 50 parts of 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline-6-sulfon-anilide, 7 parts of polyethylene glycol-nonylphenyl-ether, as a surfactant, and 43 parts of kaolin are mixed well and ground together to obtain nir a wettable powder containing 50 1 / o by weight of the essential ingredient.
The effectiveness of the fungicidal compositions according to the present invention will be shown below.
By adding to water the wettable powder prepared as indicated in Example 2, an aqueous dispersion is obtained containing the essential ingredient in a concentration of 100 ppm by weight. The dispersion is sprayed on the rice plants when they have 3 to 4 leaves, these plants being cultivated in flower pots 9 cm in diameter, the dispersion being used at a rate of 10 cm3 per pot.
The next day, the spores of the fungus Piricularia oryzae are inoculated on the rice plants, and after 5 days of incubation, the spots produced by the fungus are observed. The average number of spots per leaf is 11.1, when the spores are inoculated on untreated rice plants.
Thus, the dispersion has an extremely powerful preventive effect.
Further, the effects of the fungicidal compounds of this invention are shown in the following table, the method employed being that of germination on slides (cf. Phytopathology, vol. 37, page 354).
In the table, the figures which indicate the value of LC 95 are in units p.p.m. The compounds tested are given in an abbreviated manner indicating the radical X present in the general formula
