sur le pourtour de la virole;
avec une extrémité de l'autre évidement;
entre elles les autres extrémités desdits évidements;

Method of manufacturing a ferrule for fixing the inner end
a watch balance spring
The manufacturing processes for non-cylindrical shells
ques already known consist of various factory operations
nage, such as turning and milling on each part
of the ferrule to be obtained.
The present invention provides a better method
suitable for modern manufacturing and allowing ob
hold a ferrule at a very low cost.
It relates to a process for manufacturing a
ferrule for fixing the inner end of a
clockwork balance spring. This process is characterized in that
forms by turning a shell blank drilled in
its center, then in that said blank is machined, without
rotate it around its axis, on a machine
transfer which successively performs the following operations
boasts:
:
a) a double milling intended to form two recesses
on the perimeter of the shell;
b) a first contour in the form of a spiral, connecting
between them one end of one of said recesses
with one end of the other recess;
c) a second contour in the form of a spiral, connecting
between them the other ends of said recesses;
d) a milling to form a groove in the part
in the form of a spiral obtained by the second contour
swimming, said groove being intended to constitute a
bearing surface for the inner end of the hairspring; e) a radial milling forming a slot opening onto
the spiral-shaped part obtained by the first
contouring, said slot balancing the ferrule and faci
reading its drive on the balance axis.
The invention also relates to the ferrule obtained by the aforementioned process.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of a ferrule obtained by implementing the method according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view, the hairspring being
put in place.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2, the hairspring
being fixed to the ferrule.
Fig. 4 shows a variant of the fixing method
from the hairspring to the ferrule.
To manufacture a ferrule, we proceed for example
as following:
One forms by turning, in a cylindrical bar 1,
a shell blank 2 pierced in its center, whose
profile is shown in fig. 2. The central hole 3 is
slightly flared at one of its ends, in 4, to
facilitate its driving on the balance axis. A dega
gement 5 is formed on one side of the blank 2,
to allow the introduction of a tool to lift
or take out the ferrule.
Once we have obtained the shell 2 blank, we
factory the latter, without turning it around its
axis, on a transfer machine which performs successive
ment the following operations:
a) A double milling intended to form two recesses
6, 7 around the perimeter of the blank 2. Each of these
recesses is rectilinear, but the recess 6 is
closer than recess 7 to the center of the
ferrule.
b) A first contouring in the form of an 8 ma spiral
thematically accurate and spanning about 180ç,
which forms a sort of half-moon. Spiral 8
connects one end of the recess 6 with an end
emitted from recess 7, the vector radius of this
spiral increasing counterclockwise
of fig. 1.
c) A second contouring in the form of a spiral 9 math
matically exact and spanning less than 90t,
preferably about 600. The spiral 9 connects between
they the other ends of the recesses 6 and 7.
d) A milling to form a groove 10 in the par
spiral shaped tie 9 obtained by the second
contouring, said groove 10 being intended to cons
create a bearing surface for the inner end
of the spiral 11. The groove 10 has a rectangular section
as shown in fig. 2.
Where appropriate, operations c) and d) could
be performed simultaneously.
e) A radial milling forming a slot 12 opening out
on the spiral-shaped part 8 obtained by the
first contouring, said slot 12 balancing the
ferrule and facilitating its driving on the balan axis
shout.
To carry out the aforementioned operations, a transfer machine with several work stations is preferably used. When the first blank has undergone operation a) at the first station, it is transported to the second station, where it undergoes operation b); at the same time, a new blank undergoes operation a) at the first station. Then, the first blank passes to the third station, where it undergoes operation c), while two other blanks are machined at the first and second stations respectively, and so on. A machine is naturally chosen having as many stations as there are operations to be carried out, so that a completed shell leaves the machine at a very rapid rate. The machine is fed in a known manner using a vibrator.
To fix the inner end of the hairspring to the ferrule thus obtained, one can proceed in two different ways: either one folds the edges of the groove 10 inwards, as shown in FIG. 3, or the balance spring 11 is maintained at the bottom of the groove 10 with a non-conductive mass 13 and a welding current is passed between two electrodes 14 applied against the upper and lower faces of the ferrule, to the height of the groove 10, as shown in fig. 4.
When the hairspring 1 1 is fixed to the ferrule, its inner turn is perfectly guided by the part 9, then moves gradually outwards while remaining strictly parallel to the part 8 in the form of a spiral, without the risk of touching the latter part . The other turns develop in an absolutely concentric way. In addition, the ferrule has an extremely low cost price.
