Abstract

A panty type garment is made from one piece by taking a length of warp knit fabric with parallel top and bottom, elastic selvedge bands, forming the length into a tube and seaming the ends together with the elastic selvedge edges extending around the upper and lower edges of the tube and forming a seam, e.g. an inverted U shaped seam by joining opposed portions of the tube adjacent the lower selvedge edge to provide two closed elasticated leg portions separated by a crotch portion. Garments such as panties, panty girdles, shorts and bathing suits can be made easily and quickly by workers having minimal skills.

Description

The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a one-piece covering, in particular panties, and a garment obtained by this method.

In the manufacture of panty-type garment by known techniques, it is often necessary to perform a large number of operations in which a warp knitted fabric is used, in order to effectively incorporate elastic bands and straps. obtain the desired configuration for the garment. This results in a relatively high cost price. Some of these operations can be avoided by the use of circular knitting techniques, but these have major drawbacks. An object of the invention is to provide a method of manufacturing the garment from a warp knitted fabric, a knit for example, with a considerable economy in manufacture relative to known techniques. By garment of the panty type, we include all garments, underwear and outerwear.

The term includes, but is not limited to, panties, girdles, shorts and swimwear, for example, and may include certain types of clothing for the torso.

The starting material in the process according to the invention may be a fabric knitted on a Raschel machine which integrally incorporates a knitted elastic band extending at least along each edge and even in other positions. In the case of girdles, for example, the whole fabric can be knitted with an elastic structure. Elastic sections are knitted in a slack condition so that when the fabric is relaxed it shrinks and puckers in the warp direction at the edges. The base fabric is knitted in more or less continuous strips (i.e. in longitudinal batches) and short lengths of fabric are separated to form sections from which the individual garments are formed.

Separate short lengths of this fabric can be formed into full garments with two simple sewing operations which can be performed quickly by unskilled persons. One operation is to form the section into a tubular blank, sewing together the cut end edges of a separate section of fabric. The blank is tubular in configuration and the elastic portions, initially on the side edges of the knitted fabric, are at the top and bottom of the blank. The second operation is to form a crotch by sewing together the front and rear layers of the tubular blank, in the central region of the lower elastic band. The second seam is advantageously in the shape of an inverted U and the small section of fabric below this seam can be cut and pushed aside.

The crotch seam thus formed gives two separate leg openings, each surrounded by an elastic band.

The structure of the fabric can be very diverse to achieve different results. In each case however, the basic design is observed, of using a short section of warp knitted fabric, incorporating elastic knitted marginal surfaces which, in the finished garment, form upper and lower elastic parts, for example a band of waistband and elastic leg bands.

The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, an implementation of the method according to the invention.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a section of warp knitted fabric used in this implementation in a stretched condition.

Fig. 2 is a plan view, similar to that of FIG. 1, showing this section in relaxed condition.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a tubular garment blank produced joining the edges of the section of FIG. 2.

Fig. 4 is a front view of a garment made from the blank of FIG. 3, and
fig. 5 is a perspective view of the finished garment.

Fig. 1 shows a section of fabric 10. This section is obtained by chain knitting advantageously by means of a Raschel machine. The chain direction of section 10 is the longitudinal direction of the section shown in fig. 1. The knitted fabric is produced in more or less continuous strips 16, its edges 11 and 12 constituting the side edges of the fabric as it leaves the knitting machine. In fact, the fabric is produced in a continuous web by the machine and is gathered and rolled into a large roll. The web of material knitted in a roll which is very long relative to section 10 can be considered continuous.

The fabric section 10 is continuously knitted on the Raschel machine with elastic bands 13 and 14 on each side, formed as an integral part of the knitting and therefore forming an integral part of the fabric. The central panel 15 of the fabric may be of any structure suitable for the intended purpose. For example, when the garment is panties, the center panel 15 may be a lightweight knit. When the garment is a sheath, this central panel can be elastic and stretchable in two directions. The garment shown and described here is panties. It is understood, however, that the basic principles of the process are applicable in a wide field of garment making, including underwear and outerwear.

In the section of fabric shown in FIG. 1, the elastic band 13 can advantageously comprise a knitted elastic braid, the width of which (vertical in FIG. 1) can be of the order of 12.8 mm and which can advantageously constitute in the finished garment, an elastic waistband. . On the opposite edge of the fabric, the elastic band 12 is also constituted by an elastic knitted braid with a width of the order of 6.4 mm and may constitute in the finished garment an elastic leg band. For a contemplated garment, the total width of the fabric produced by the knitting machine may be on the order of 23-25cm, for example, and corresponds to the desired height for the finished garment. However, these dimensions may be different.

In making the web of continuous fabric 16 (Fig. 1), increased tension is maintained on the elastic bands 13, 14 during their knitting as well as during rolling, so that these bands are kept in good condition. stretched relative to the panel or body of the fabric, herein assumed to be a knit. Thus, during this phase of the preparation, the body 15 being in normal condition, the elastic bands 13, 14 are maintained in a stretched condition of about 130% of their length in the fully relaxed state, for example. The total stretchability of the elastic bands can be from 180 to 200% of their relaxed lengths, it being understood of course that these lengths under stretched and relaxed conditions are only examples.

One of the initial stages in the manufacture of the garment, after making the knitted strip 16, is to separate the strip 16 into sections of fabric 10 of generally rectangular shape. Section 10 is said to be of generally rectangular shape in that this section assumes this configuration when the elastic bands 13, 14 are stretched in their knitting condition. It is understood that during the separation of the section 10 of the continuous belt under tension, the elastic bands 13, 14 contract until they take their relaxed length, producing a gathering of the marginal parts of the central body 15 and giving the section 10 a configuration similar to that illustrated in FIG. 2.

In the properly tensioned strip, the end edges 17, 18 of section 10 extend substantially straight and perpendicular to the axis of the strip (fig. 1), while these edges 17, 18 in the separate section of fig. . 2 are distorted from the rectilinear arrangement.

The longitudinal dimension of section 10, which is the horizontal direction in FIG. 1, and also the warp direction when the fabric is knitted, is determined to match the desired waist size for the garment. This length should take into account all the factors involved, including the elasticity of the elastic and the margins needed for the cover and the seam. Thus, for each particular construction, it may be necessary to empirically establish the optimum proper length of section 10 for a given ultimate waistband dimension.

After separation of the section 10 from the continuous web 16, the section is folded around a transverse axis to form a tubular garment blank 19 (Fig. 3). The respective end edges 17, 18 of the section are secured together by stitching to form a marginal seam 20. Normally, the tubular blank 19 may have a tubular rectilinear configuration in which the circumference of the elastic waistband 13 is substantially the same. than that of the elastic leg band 14. However, a certain taper of the tubular blank may be advantageous, one of the elastic bands having a greater circumference than the other band.

A similar result can be obtained, if desired, by imparting a different extension to the elastic bands 13, 14 during knitting or rolling, so that the section of fabric released, after separation from the roll, exhibits bands. elastic 13, 14 released of slightly different lengths.

The tubular blank 19 generally after the completion of the seam 20 but in some cases before or during this operation, receives a crotch seam 21 (Fig. 4). At a minimum, the seam 21 is required to secure the front and back layers of the blank together in the surface near the lower elastic band 14, to divide the lower part of the garment and the lower band 14 so as to form openings. separate legs 22, 23 surrounded by separate elastic leg bands 14a, 14b. It is advantageous that the crotch seam 21 is in the shape of an inverted U (fig. 4), the lower ends of the seam being separated by 2.5 to 5 cm to ensure proper separation between the leg openings 22. , 23.

The width of the U-shaped seam 21 can be varied to change the relationship between the circumference of the leg bands 14a, 14b and the waist band 13 in the finished garment, as understood. It is obvious that the inverted U shape given to the crotch seam 21 does not imply any special restriction on the size or shape of this seam, but favors the making of the garment by the method envisaged. As shown in fig. 4, the small area 24 of fabric surrounded by the crotch seam 21 and disposed below it can be separated from the garment and pushed aside if not necessary. This can be done during the sewing operation, by a suitable accessory of the sewing machine, according to known techniques.

It is advantageous, but not necessary, that the edge seam 20 is aligned with the top of the crotch seam 21. This arrangement decreases the number of stitches required to form the elastic leg bands 14a, 14b and also results in at the seam 20 a minimum length in the finished garment. Alternatively, the edge seam can be provided on one side of the garment.

After formation of the seams 20 and 21, the making of the garment is completed. The garment can be turned so that the inside comes out, so that the rough edges of the seams are exposed to the inside of the garment only (Fig. 5).

It is understood that the method described allows great savings to be made in the manufacture of panty-type garments, compared, for example, with known garments of this type comprising a warp knitted body. In the prior art, two front and rear bodies are cut and sewn together along the two side edges and at the crotch. This requires the cutting and handling of two separate pieces of fabric and three sewing operations, up to this point in the making process. Then, the known technique requires the sewing of elastic bands of waist and separate legs, involving the handling of many parts and requiring skilled workers to obtain a quality product.

On the contrary, the method described involves the formation of a knitted fabric on a Raschel machine comprising on these edges one-piece elastic bands. The knitted fabric is divided into sections of given lengths corresponding to the desired waistband dimensions, and the garment is made from these sections by a folding operation and two simple seams. Not only is the work greatly reduced with the method described, but the skill of the workers who implement it can be much lower than that required by the known techniques.

The disclosed method is suitable for the mass production of panty-type garments at low cost. However, the method is applicable in a wide field of clothing and allows considerable variation in the design of the garment, which is particularly advantageous for the market.
