Die Herstellung der neuen Verbindungen erfolgt in für analoge Verbindungen bekannter Weise. Man erhält sie z. B.
a) durch Umsetzung der durch Halogenierung der entsprechenden Säuren leicht zugänglichen 2-(4'-Phenoxyphen-oxy)-propionsäurehalogenide der Formel X mit Verbindungen der Formel XI in Gegenwart oder Abwesenheit von säu-20 rebindenden Mitteln nach der Gleichung:

Handelt es sich bei den Verbindungen der Formel XI um solche, in denen der Rest Rj durch einen Rest der Formel II oder III substituiert ist, so können sie ohne Zusatz säurebindender Mittel umgesetzt werden. Insbesondere werden,
wenn einer der Reste R2 bzw. R3 oder beide Wasserstoff sind, die Verbindungen der Formel XI als Hydrohalogenide zur Reaktion eingesetzt.
b) Durch Umsetzung von entsprechenden 2-(4'-Phenoxy-phenoxy)-propionsäuren mit Alkoholen der Formel XI unter saurer Katalyse.

d) Durch Umsetzung von Salzen von entsprechenden 2-(4'-Phenoxyphenoxy)-propionsäuren (Formel I, Rj = H) mit halogensubstituierten Verbindungen der Formel Hal-Rj.
Durch nachträgliche Abwandlung der Ester der Formel I mittels Alkylierung, Acylierung oder Oxidation kann man weitere Verbindungen der Formel I erhalten. Z.B. kann man

im Esterrest durch Hydroxy-, Mercapto- oder Aminogrup-pen substituierte Ester nach bekannten Methoden alkylieren oder acylieren oder im Esterrest vorhandene Thioäther-gruppen in bekannter Weise zu Sulfin- oder Sulfongruppen oxidieren.
Die Verbindungen der Formel I sind gegen ein breites Spektrum von ein- und mehrjährigen Schadgräsern herbizid wirksam; gleichzeitig werden sie von zweikeimblättrigen Kulturpflanzen gut toleriert. Damit sind sie zur selektiven Bekämpfung von Schadgräsern in Kulturpflanzen geeignet. Insbesondere eignen sie sich wegen ihrer guten Wirkung gegen Quecke, Bermudagras und andere perennierende Un-gräser zum Einsatz in Obstanlagen, Weinbergen und Plantagenanlagen.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist daher auch die Verwendung der Verbindungen der Formel I zur Bekämpfung von Ungräsern.
Die erfindungsgemässen Mittel enthalten die Wirkstoffe der Formel I im allgemeinen zu 2-95 Gew.-%. Sie können als benetzbare Pulver, emulgierbare Konzentrate, versprühbare Lösungen, Stäubemittel oder Granulate in den üblichen Zubereitungen angewendet werden.
Benetzbare Pulver sind in Wasser gleichmässig disper-gierbare Präparate, die neben dem Wirkstoff ausser einem Verdünnungs- oder Inertstoff noch Netzmittel, z.B. poly-oxäthylierte Alkylphenöle, polyoxäthylierte Oleyl- oder Stearylamine, Alkyl- oder Alkylphenylsulfonate und Dispergiermittel, z.B. lignin-sulfonsaures Natrium, 2,2'-di-naphthylmethan-6,6'-disulfonsaures Natrium, oder auch oleylmethyltaurinsaures Natrium enthalten.
Emulgierbare Konzentrate werden durch Auflösen des Wirkstoffs in einem organischen Lösungsmittel, z.B. Buta-nol, Cyclohexanon, Dimethylformamid, Xylol oder auch höhersiedenden Aromaten erhalten.
Stäubemittel erhält man durch Vermählen des Wirkstoffs mit fein verteilten, festen Stoffen, z.B. Talkum, natürlichen

Tonen, wie Kaolin, Bentonit, Pyrophillit oder Diatomeenerde.
Versprühbare Lösungen, wie sie vielfach in Sprühdosen gehandelt werden, enthalten den Wirkstoff in einem organischen Lösungsmittel gelöst. Daneben befindet sich z.B. als Treibmittel ein Gemisch von Fluorchlorkohlenwasserstoffen.
Granulate können entweder durch Verdüsen des Wirkstoffes auf adsorptionsfähiges, granuliertes Inertmaterial hergestellt werden oder durch Aufbringen von Wirkstoffkonzentraten mittels Klebemitteln, z.B. Polyvinylalkohol, •polyacrylsaurem Natrium oder auch Mineralölen auf die Oberfläche von Trägerstoffen, wie Sand, Kaolinite, oder von granuliertem Inertmaterial. Auch können geeignete Wirkstoffe in der für die Herstellung von Düngemittelgranalien üblichen Weise - gewünschtenfalls in Mischung mit Düngemitteln - hergestellt werden.
Bei herbiziden Mitteln können die Konzentrationen der Wirkstoffe in den handelsüblichen Formulierungen verschieden sein.
In benetzbaren Pulvern variiert die Wirkstoffkonzentration z.B. zwischen etwa 10 und 80%. Der Rest besteht aus den oben angegebenen Formulierungszusätzen. Bei emul-gierbaren Konzentraten ist die Wirkstoffkonzentration etwa 10 bis 60%. Staubförmige Formulierungen enthalten meistens 5-20% an Wirkstoff, versprühbare Lösungen etwa 2-20%. Bei Granulaten hängt der Wirkstoffgehalt z.T. davon ab, ob die wirksame Verbindung flüssig oder fest vorliegt und welche Granulierhilfsmittel, Füllstoffe usw. verwendet werden.
Zur Anwendung werden die handelsüblichen Konzentrate gegebenenfalls in üblicher Weise verdünnt, z.B. bei benetzbaren Pulvern und emulgierbaren Konzentraten mittels Wasser. Staubförmige und granulierte Zubereitungen sowie versprühbare Lösungen werden vor der Anwendung nicht mehr mit weiteren inerten Stoffen verdünnt. Mit den äusseren Bedingungen wie Temperatur, Feuchtigkeit u.a. variiert die erforderliche Aufwandmenge. Sie kann innerhalb weiter Grenzen schwanken, z.B. zwischen 0,1 kg/ha und 10 kg/ha Aktivsubstanz, liegt jedoch vorzugsweise zwischen 0,3 kg/ha und 3 kg/ha.
Die Wirkstoffe der Formel I können mit anderen Herbiziden und Bodeninsektiziden kombiniert werden. Als her-bizide Mischungspartner eignen sich nachfolgend aufgeführte Verbindungen.

98-85 Gewichtsteilen inerten Granulatmaterialien, wie z.B. 50 Atapulgit, Bimsstein und Quarzsand.
Herstellungsbeispiele:
Beispiel 1:
2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-methylmercaptoäth-l-yl)-ester 32,5 g = 0,1 Mol 2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phen-oxy]-propionsäure, 9,2 g = 0,1 Mol 2-Methylmercapto-äthanol und 2 ml konz. Schwefelsäure werden in 60 ml Chloroform unter azeotropem Abdestillieren des Reaktionswassers 6 Stunden am Rückfluss erhitzt. Nach dem Abkühlen wird mit Wasser gewaschen, anschliessend mit Bikarbonatlösung und nochmals mit Wasser gewaschen. Nach dem Trocknen über Calciumchlorid wird das Lösungsmittel ab-65 gezogen und der Rückstand im Hochvakuum destilliert.
Man erhält 33,2 g = 83% d.Th. 2-[4'-(4"-Trifiuorme-thylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-methylmercapto-äth-l-yl)-ester mit dem Brechungsindex nD = 1,5248.

2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(3-methylpent-l-in-3-yl)-ester 0,1 Mol = 34,8 g 2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxyj-propionsäurechlorid wird zu einer Lösung von 9,3 g = 0,095 Mol 3-Hydroxy-3-methyl-pent-l-in und 0,1 Mol = 10,1 g Triäthylamin in 80 ml Toluol zugetropft. Beispiel 3:
2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-dimethylamino-äth-1 -yl)-ester Zu einer Lösung von 0,08 Mol = 7,12 g 2-Dimethyl-aminoäthanol in 50 ml absolutem Toluol tropft man bei Raumtemperatur 0,08 Mol = 27,56 g 2-[4'-(4"-Trifluorme-thylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäurechlorid, gelöst in 30 ml Toluol. Nach Zugabe wird 1 Stunde bei 50 °C gerührt. Anschliessend gibt man 100 ml lN-Kaliumcarbonatlösung zu und rührt 1 Stunde bei Raumtemperatur. Nach dem Wa-25 sehen mit Wasser und Trocknen über Na2S04 wird Toluol abdestilliert und der ölige Rückstand im Hochvakuum destilliert.
Man erhält 27,95 g = 88% d.Th. 2-[4'-(4"-Trifluor-methyIphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-dimethylamino-30 äth-l-yl)-ester vom Siedepunkt 165 °C, 0,08 Torr.

2-[4/-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-methylsulfonyläth-1 -yl)-ester Zu einer Lösung von 20 g = 0,05 Mol 2-[4'-(4"-Trifluor-methylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-methyl-mercaptoäth-l-yl)-ester (Beispiel 3) in 40 ml Chloroform tropft man ohne Kühlung eine Lösung von 32 g 3-Chlorper-benzoesäure (65%ig) in Chloroform, entsprechend 0,12 Mol

Nach dem Trocknen über Natriumsulfat und Abziehen des Lösungsmittels 45 erhält man 19,9 g = 92% d.Th. an 2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethyl-phenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-methylsulfonyläth-1 -yl)-ester mit dem Brechungsindex nD23 = 1.5215.

2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäure-(2-chloracetoxyäth-1 -yl)-ester 0,05 Mol = 18,5 g2-[4'-(4"-Trifluormethylphenoxy)-phenoxy]-propionsäureglykolhalbester (Beispiel 2) und 0,055 Mol = 5,5 g Triäthylamin werden in 80 ml Toluol gelöst. Biologische Beispiele Beispiel I:
Samen von Gräsern wurden in Töpfen ausgesät und die als Spritzpulver formulierten erfindungsgemässen Präparate in verschiedenen Dosierungen auf die Erdoberfläche gesprüht. Anschliessend wurden die Töpfe für 4 Wochen in einem Gewächshaus aufgestellt. Das Resultat der Behandlung (ebenso auch bei den folgenden Beispielen) wurde durch eine Bonitierung nach dem Schema von Bolle (Nachrichtenblatt des Deutschen Pflanzenschutzdienstes 16,1964,92-94) ermittelt:

Ebenso wurde bei den eingesetzten herbiziden Vergleichsmitteln Fluorodifen (4-Nitrophenyl-(2'-nitro-4'-tri-fluormethylphenyl)-äther) und Mecoprop (2-(2'-Chlor-2'-methylphenoxy)-propionsäure) verfahren. Die in Tabelle I zusammengestellten Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Verbindungen der Formel I wesentlich besser gegen Gräser wirksam sind als die beiden Vergleichsherbizide. Eine ähnliche Wirkung gegen Gräser zeigten auch die übrigen Verbindungen aus den Herstellungsbeispielen.

Beispiel II:
Samen von einjährigen Gräsern wurden in Töpfen ausgesät und im Gewächshaus angezogen. 3 Wochen nach der Aussaat wurden die als Spritzpulver formulierten erfin-45 dungsgemässen Mittel in verschiedenen Dosierungen auf die Pflanzen gesprüht und nach 4 Wochen Standzeit im Gewächshaus die Wirkung der Mittel bonitiert. Von den mehrjährigen Gräsern Quecke (Agropyron) und Bermudagras (Cynodon) wurden Rhizome bzw. junge etablierte Pflanzen so in Töpfe umgepflanzt, ca. 4 Wochen angezogen und anschliessend bei einer Wachstumshöhe von ca. 10-15 cm mit den Verbindungen der Formel I behandelt, d.h. überspritzt. Die Erfolgsbonitur erfolgte ca. 4 Wochen nach der Behandlung. Auch in diesem Versuch dienten Fluorodifen und Mess coprop als herbizide Vergleichsmittel. Die Verbindungen der Formel I waren bei diesem Applikationsverfahren besser gegen ein- und mehrjährige Gräser wirksam als die beiden Vergleichsmittel (Tabelle II). Eine ähnliche Wirkung zeigten auch die anderen Verbindungen aus den Herstellungsbei-«o spielen.

- 632732PATENTANSPRÜCHE 1. Herbizide Mittel, gekennzeichnet durch einen Gehalt an einem oder mehreren neuen 2-[4'-Phenoxyphenoxy]-pro-pionsäurederivaten der Formel I als aktive Komponente
