Description

Electrolysis apparatus. The present invention relates to an electrolysis apparatus for the production of hydrogen and oxygen.

The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of this device.

Fig. 1 is a view in vertical section; Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show sections along lines 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 of FIG. 1; Fig. 5 is a side view of the apparatus with the outer wall removed and the plates and diaphragms partially broken away; Fig. 6 is a plan view. The apparatus shown comprises a pair of anode plates 1 placed in the center and cathode plates 2 arranged on either side of the anode plates, as well as diaphragms arranged between these plates.

1 designates the pair of anodes, and 2 the cathodes. The anodes and cathodes are preferably galvanized and square shaped. They are substantially identical to each other; the detailed description of an anode will therefore suffice for the two parts: The generating surface of each anode comprises a certain number of rectilinear vertical ribs 3, each having a V-shaped section. In practice, the plates 1 and 2 have preferably about 65 cm per side and the ribs are spaced about 25 mm apart and protrude for about 3 min on the front face 4 of each plate, the thickness of the latter being substantially 6 mm.

Each anode is provided on its rear face with a rib 5 which circles it at a short distance from its edge or periphery, and with diagonal ribs 6 which intersect with each other and which meet the rib 5 at its four angles. Near each of the sides, the lower and upper branches or parts of the rib 5 are provided with bosses 7 each having a recess 8 intended to receive the cutting and supporting rods designated 9 and 10 respectively.

Each of the cathodes 2 is arranged like the anodes 1; except that the ribs 32 are offset with respect to the ribs 3, so as to be, after assembly, in the middle of the intervals between the ribs of the corresponding anode. The rear of each cathode is provided with ribs 52 and 62 which correspond. respec tively to the ribs 5 and 6 of the anodes.

Each cathode is provided, at the rear, with bosses 72 similar to the bosses 7 and each comprising a recess 82 similar to the recesses 8. In order to fix the cathodes to their conductive rods, and d- support, designated respectively by 9 and 102, each boss is provided with a clamping piece 11 which comprises a recess cooperating with that of the boss and is fixed to said bos sage by means of a clamping screw 12. The anodes are connected to each other as well as to their rods conductive and support by means of screws 7b mounted in openings 7c of the bosses 7.

When the anodes and cathodes are assembled to their rods, the two anodes and each cathode are mounted inside rectangular frames. Each frame is formed of a strip in the form of a gutter cut from a sheet and the edges of which are directed inwards. The anode frame is shown at 13, and the two cathode frames at 14.

After assembly of the parts, the bottoms of the frames 13 and 14 extend below the bases of the plates 1 and 2 and the tops of the frames extend well above the top of the plates, so as to constitute, with plates cooperating laterals, collecting spaces for the gases preferably rising about 30 cm above the top of the plates.

In order to establish the oxygen collecting space, sheet metal plates 15 each having an upper flange 152 and side flanges 1511 are fixed to the upper flanges 132 and the side flanges 1311 of the frame 13, by welding the flanges 152 to the wings 132 and the flanges 15v on the wings 13b.

At a short distance above the top of the anode plates, the plates 15 are curved outwardly at 15c, the flanges 7.5b being cut so as to allow the ends of the portions 15 tilting upward. outside extend across the flanges 13 "'to the outer edges of the latter, and are welded to them. There is thus established above the anode plates a collector space formed by the sides and the above the frame 13, and by the attached plates 15. A tube 151, intended to bring the oxygen into a suitable collector, starts from the central part of the top of the frame 13.

Each of the frames 14 is arranged in the same way as the frame 13 and the upper part of each of the frames 14 contains a collecting space similar to that of the frame 13. 16 designates one of the attached plates applied on either side of the frame. frame 14, 162 the top edge and 16b the side edge of each plate, by means of which the latter is welded to the wings 142 and 14b of the frame 14, and 16 the curved lower end of each of the plates 16.

The lower ends of the inner plates 16 are opposite the lower ends 15e of the plates 15, and spaced from the latter by about 3 mm, that is to say by the same distance which exists between the ribs 3 and 32.

Across the spaces which separate the plates 15 and 16 are cross members 17, the ends of which are welded to the flanges 151, and 16 <B> "</B>. These cross members serve to secure the upper ends of the diaphragms.

It will be noted that the outer ends of the ribs 3 are located in the planes of the outer ends of the edges of the gutter formed by the frame 13; and that the outer ends of the ribs 32 are each located in the plane of one of the edges of the gutter of the frames 14. The diaphragms 18, preferably made of asbestos cloth, cooperate with the anode plates.

The diaphragms 18 are made of a single piece of pocket-shaped canvas so that they can be clamped around said frame 13 and brought into intimate contact with the ribs 3, while being fixed to the frame 13 by means of a pair. clamps 20, in the form of gutters. The upper end of the pocket is slit and each of its sides 18a is applied around the corresponding bar 17 and secured thereto, for example, by stitching.

The diaphragms will be in direct contact with the bottoms of the parts deflected outwards, 15, of the plates 15; a leak-free clamping can be ensured by spacing the bars 17 so that the diaphragm is curved inward above the bottoms, or towards the plates 15.

Similar diaphragms 21 will be applied similarly to the cathode plates and against their frames 14, the upper ends of the diaphragms being applied around the outer bars 17 and fixed thereto, and the bodies of the diaphragms being fixed to said frames at using pliers 22, in the form of gutters, similar to pliers 20.

       A. the lower cross member of each of the frames 13 is fixed one. pair of isolators 23 arranged so as to receive the rods 9 and 10 respec tively. In the upper cross member of the frame 13 there is an insulating lining 24 through which the conductive rod 9 passes; and on the other side of said cross member is fixed a block 25 of insulating material which receives the upper end of the support or consolidation rod 10.

Similar insulating blocks 251 are fixed to the lower cross members of the frames 14, while the upper cross member of each of said frames is provided with a gasket 241, and an insulating block 251, similar to parts 24 and 25, but arranged at opposite ends of the frame. From the middle of the top of each frame 14 starts a communication tube 26 intended to bring the hydrogen into a suitable container.

The parts which have just been described are introduced into an appropriate container 27, of determined length and width, so as to allow the assembly to be fitted there exactly.

The parts being established and arranged as it has just been written, the tank 27 is filled with electrolytic liquid up to a point situated at a short distance below the base of the tubes 15 and 26. The electrolyte collects. will be found at the same level in the collecting spaces formed by the tops of the frames and the walls or plates 15 and 16, above the anodes and cathodes respectively.

The current started in conductor 8 will break down the electrolyte in the usual way. The oxygen released on the outer faces of the anodes 1 will rise inside the spaces formed by the diaphragms and the ribs 3; it will strike the inclined lower ends 15 of the plates 15, will pass from bottom to top in the collector space formed by the frame 13 and by said plates and will be debited by the tube 15 into a suitable collector.

The hydrogen released on the inner faces of the cathode plates will rise in the space formed between the diaphragms 21 and the ribs 3a; it will strike the ends 16c, deflected inwards, of the plates 16, will enter the collecting spaces formed by the plates 16 and the frames 14, and. will be brought by the tubes 26 into a suitable collector.

Due to the fact that the contact between each diaphragm and each rib takes place along a line, at this point there will be no surface suitable for the formation of a liquid film, so there will be no loss of gas, the diaphragms, as we have seen, being applied without play across said ribs and being in engagement without play with the inflected lower ends of the side walls of the plates of the collecting spaces. The water level in the different collecting spaces of each unit will be the same, since the collecting spaces have the same cross section.

If for some reason the element did not perform as it should, and a certain amount of gas were to escape around the lower edges of the baffles 15 and 16 or through the diaphragms, this gas would be forced. to escape into the atmosphere and could not mix with the rest of the gas in its collecting space or in its evacuation tube. Even if the pressure of the gas in one of the receiving tanks would be sufficient to lower the level of the electrolyte in its collecting space, no mixing of the gas with the remainder of the gas produced would take place.

In this case, if the gas pressure was sufficient to cause it to pass through the diaphragm, it would escape directly into the atmosphere through the space between said diaphragm and the neighboring diaphragm.

Gutter-shaped clamps 20 are advantageous not only as a means of securing the diaphragm in place, but also for securing the position and spacing of the anodes and cathodes and their diaphragms. The apparatus is easily adapted to such variations in voltage and amperage which exist in common electrical installations, and several apparatuses can be connected in parallel as well as in series.
