Definitions
- the invention relates to a cooling system with a main and several additional coolers, each associated with a heat source, and with a pump, the additional coolers being connected to both the pump and the main cooler.
- the main cooler is connected on the output side in parallel to a first additional cooler for the charge air of an internal combustion engine and to a second additional cooler for an air conditioning system.
- the second additional cooler is followed by a third additional cooler for oil cooling, which supplies coolant to a pump via a line which is also connected to the first additional cooler.
- This pump conveys the coolant through an engine block of the internal combustion engine and either via the main cooler to the first or second additional cooler or via a calming tank back to an input of the pump.
- a dividing valve provided on the output side of the engine block always ensures that the auxiliary coolers are supplied with coolant heated by the internal combustion engine even if this is supplied directly to the pump in a short-circuited circuit during the warm-up phase of the internal combustion engine, largely bypassing the main cooler.
- the flow rate of coolant through the additional coolers depends on the flow resistances inherent in the additional coolers.
- This cooling system is disadvantageous in that the flow rates of the coolant through the additional cooler cannot be varied.
- a certain amount of coolant namely that which is supplied to the auxiliary coolers, is passed through the main cooler and is forcibly cooled therein, so that the warm-up phase of the internal combustion engine is delayed.
- the object underlying the invention is seen in improving the cooling system in such a way that a more flexible design of the flow rates through the individual additional coolers is possible.
- the main cooler on the output side is divided into several sections to form separate coolant circuits, the additional coolers on the input side are connected to different sections and the output side are connected to the pump via a valve for regulating the flow rate.
- the flow rate through the additional coolers can be controlled by means of the valve and a coolant backlog built up by the valve into one or more of the sections, which causes coolant to be diverted to another section and thus to another additional cooler.
- a coolant backflow through the additional cooler concerned is achieved according to an idea further developing the invention in that the valve is provided upstream of at least two additional coolers.
- bypass line advantageously connects downstream to a line extending between the main cooler and a heat source assigned to it, it is ensured that the coolant supplied to at least one additional cooler during the warm-up phase of the Internal combustion engine does not flow over the main cooler, so that the warm-up phase is kept short.
- Very favorable cooling processes are achieved when the flow cross sections of the respective sections on the cooling of the additional coolers assigned to them and their cooling temperature range.
- FIG. 1 shows a water-cooled engine 10, in particular an internal combustion engine, with a cooling jacket (not shown in more detail), to the front end area of which a main cooler 11 is attached.
- the main cooler 11 has an upper and a lower coolant space 12 and 13.
- the upper coolant chamber 12 extends completely over the front upper end region of the main cooler 11 and is connected to the engine 10 via a return line 14.
- the upper and lower coolant spaces 12 and 13 are interconnected by a plurality of vertically extending tubes 15.
- the lower coolant space 13 is divided into a front and a rear section 16 and 17, the tubes 15 opening partly into the front and partly into the rear section 16 and 17.
- an impeller 18 which, as indicated by arrows 19, 'cooling air through the main cooler 11, to cool the air flowing through the main radiator coolant.
- the front section 16 is larger than the rear section 17, in particular the dimensions in the flow direction of the cooling air are different.
- the engine 10 is used, for example, in industrial equipment or vehicles that have hydraulically operated devices. If hydraulic oil or hydraulic fluid is used for this purpose, they themselves become a heat source and must be cooled in order to maintain their lubricating or other properties. For this reason, a first additional cooler 20 is provided in the cooling system, which has a hydraulic oil inlet 21 and a hydraulic oil outlet 22 for guiding the hydraulic oil through the first additional cooler 20 and to or from the hydraulically operated device or devices.
- the coolant is conducted from the front section 16 of the lower coolant chamber 13 through a line 23 to the first additional cooler 20.
- a drain line 24 leads from the first additional cooler 20 to a valve 25, the meaning and purpose of which will be explained further below.
- a hydraulically operated torque converter is also used in the vehicle, and the hydraulic oil required for this must also be cooled.
- a second additional cooler 26 is provided which has a hydraulic oil inlet 27 and a hydraulic oil outlet 28, the hydraulic oil inlet 27 receiving hydraulic oil from the torque converter, this flowing through the second additional cooler 26 and being fed back to the torque converter through the hydraulic oil outlet 28.
- a coolant line 29 extends from the rear section 17 to the second additional cooler for the torque converter, and a coolant line 30 serves to remove the coolant from the second additional cooler 26.
- the coolant coming from the first additional cooler 20 flows through the valve 25 and through a line 31 and hits the coolant line 30 before flowing into a pump 32.
- the pump 32 also has an inlet, the Coolant is supplied from the coolant line 30 and the line 31.
- Most of the coolant flowing through the pump 32 flows into an engine block, not shown in detail, and a cylinder head of the engine 10, also not shown separately, where it is used to cool the engine 10.
- a part also flows through a line denoted by 34, through this to a third auxiliary cooler 35 and from there via a coolant outlet 36 to the return line 14.
- the coolant in the engine block and in the cylinder head runs into the return line 14 conventional and therefore not to be described in detail.
- the third auxiliary cooler 35 has an oil inlet 37, which receives warm oil from an unspecified crankshaft housing of the engine 10 and passes it through the third auxiliary cooler 35 to an oil outlet 38, from where it is fed back to the crankshaft housing.
- additional coolers 20, 26 and 35 are listed in this exemplary embodiment in addition to the main cooler 11, it can still be seen that further additional coolers can also be provided for further heat sources.
- additional heat sources could arise where liquid in an air conditioning system has to be cooled. In such an application, it would be a different liquid; however, the coolant used in this cooling system could be used to cool this liquid, even if the cooling would take place at a different cooling temperature level.
- the valve 25 is used to limit the amount of coolant flowing through the first auxiliary cooler 20 in most cases. This happens in cases where the first Z usatzkühler 20 more refrigerant required as for example, associated with the torque converter second additional radiator 26.
- a bypass conduit 40 extends from an upper portion to a lower portion of the engine block of the engine 10 and is connected to thehariffenlei device 29, which leads into the second auxiliary cooler 26, connected.
- thermostats are used in this exemplary embodiment in order to bring the coolant to a certain temperature in a short time. However, when the engine is started, this temperature is not enough to open the thermostat. Thus, the bypass line 40 is used to direct coolant from the engine 10 to the torque converter.
- the valve 25 serves to direct the flow of coolant through the first auxiliary cooler 20 and to some extent through the second auxiliary cooler 26, since the coolant that is prevented from flowing through the first auxiliary cooler 20 flows into the front portion 16 of FIG lower coolant chamber 13 and finally flows into the upper coolant chamber 12, where it then flows predominantly into the rear section 17 and into the second additional cooler 26.
- additional auxiliary coolers it would be necessary to provide valves for the additional auxiliary coolers and possibly to divide the lower coolant space 13 into further sections.
- the separation of the lower coolant chamber 13 into the two sections 16, 17 prevents excessive backflow pressure from one section into the other section 16, 17. If the thermostat is closed during the warm-up time of the internal combustion engine, the pump 32 also causes a suction effect limited coolant flow through the first auxiliary cooler 20 instead.
