  • This invention relates to caps for writing instruments, such as ball point pens.
  • Caps are made in a wide variety of shapes, often injection moulded of plastics materials. It is unfortunately the case that caps are often swallowed, and in certain cases can lodge in the throat leading to complete blockage of the windpipe and death. This problem is more dangerous when the cap has a clip which is pointed and can pierce the lining of the throat.

  • the clip has an enlargement 12 to assist grip at its free end, and is integral with the casing at its closed end 13 where it is joined by a root 14.
  • the casing and clip are injection moulded plastic.
  • a bore 15 extends the full length of the clip and is open at both ends. In the event of the cap being swallowed, even if the whole windpipe is blocked by contraction of its walls around the cap, the bore 15 will still provide a sufficient air passage.
  • the root 14 is narrowed to ensure that air passages 17 exist below the clip, which are additional to the two bores 15 through the clip. The total cross-sectional area of the air passages is thus increased.
  • the bore(s), passage or channel along the clip may be arranged to emerge sideways at or near the root provided the air passage is maintained.
  • the clip extends the full length of the casing, otherwise there is a danger of the windpipe contracting around the casing alone and thus blocking the air passage(s) provided by the invention.
  • a channel extends longitudinally through the root 14, relying on the space below the clip 11 to form a channel along the remainder of the length. The size of the channel can be increased by providing a groove 30 running through the enlargement 12.

Claims (5)

  1. Kappe für Schreibinstrument, welche allgemein die Form einer länglichen Hülle (13) hat, die an einem Ende geschlossen ist und einen Klipp (11) aufweist, der sich über die gesamte Länge der Außenwand der Hülle (13) erstreckt, wobei ein Ende des Klipps (11) über ein Fußteil (14) fest mit der Hülle (13) verbunden ist und das Fußteil den Klipp (11) von der Hülle (13) beabstandet, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Klipp (11) wenigstens einen sich über die gesamte Länge erstreckenden Luftkanal (15) aufweist, und der Kanal (15) an beiden Enden der Hülle (13) offen ist, und daß sich ein Loch oder mehrere Löcher, welche einen Teil des Luftkanals (15) bildet bzw. bilden, in Längsrichtung durch das Fußteil (14) erstreckt bsw. erstrecken.
  2. Kappe nach Anspruch 1, bei der der Klipp (11) an seinem freien Ende ein von dem Klipp (11) ausgehendes und der Hülle (13) zugewandtes Verdickungsteil (12) aufweist, und wobei das Verdickungsteils (12) eine einen Teil des Kanals (15) bildende Rinne aufweist.
  3. Kappe nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei der wenigstens ein Teil des Kanals durch den Raum zwischen dem Klipp (11) und der Hülle (13) gebildet ist.
  4. Kappe nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei der der Klipp (11) nach unten in Richtung auf die Hülle (13) weisende Kanten hat, wodurch ein invertierter, den Kanal (15) umgrenzender Kanalabschnitt gebildet wird.
  5. Kappe nach Anspruch 1, bei der wenigstens ein Kanal (15) durch ein sich über die gesamte Länge des Klipps (11) erstreckendes Loch gebildet wird.
