  • This invention relates to caps for writing instruments, such as ball point pens.
  • Caps are made in a wide variety of shapes, often injection moulded of plastics materials. It is unfortunately the case that caps are often swallowed, and in certain cases can lodge in the throat leading to complete blockage of the windpipe and death. This problem is more dangerous when the cap has a clip which is pointed and can pierce the lining of the throat.

  • the clip has an enlargement 12 to assist grip at its free end, and is integral with the casing at its closed end 13 where it is joined by a root 14.
  • the casing and clip are injection moulded plastic.
  • a bore 15 extends the full length of the clip and is open at both ends. In the event of the cap being swallowed, even if the whole windpipe is blocked by contraction of its walls around the cap, the bore 15 will still provide a sufficient air passage.
  • the root 14 is narrowed to ensure that air passages 17 exist below the clip, which are additional to the two bores 15 through the clip. The total cross-sectional area of the air passages is thus increased.
  • the bore(s), passage or channel along the clip may be arranged to emerge sideways at or near the root provided the air passage is maintained.
  • the clip extends the full length of the casing, otherwise there is a danger of the windpipe contracting around the casing alone and thus blocking the air passage(s) provided by the invention.
  • a channel extends longitudinally through the root 14, relying on the space below the clip 11 to form a channel along the remainder of the length. The size of the channel can be increased by providing a groove 30 running through the enlargement 12.

Claims (5)

  1. Capuchon pour instrument d'écriture, lequel capuchon a la forme générale d'un tube (13) allongé fermé à une extrémité, muni d'une agrafe s'étendant sur toute la longueur de la paroi extérieure du tube (13), une extrémité de l'agrafe (11) étant fixée au tube (13) par un élément formant patte (14) qui maintient l'agrafe (11) à distance du tube (13), caractérisé en ce que l'agrafe (11) définit au moins un canal d'air (15) sur toute sa longueur, le canal (15) étant ouvert à chaque extrémité du tube (13), et en ce qu'un ou plusieurs perçages constituant une partie du canal d'air (15) s'étendent longitudinalement dans l'élément (14) formant patte.
  2. Capuchon selon la revendication 1, dans lequel le capuchon (11) présente une partie (12) élargie à son extrémité libre qui s'étend à partir de l'agrafe (11) vers le tube (13), et dans lequel la partie élargie (12) comporte une gorge constituant une partie dudit canal (15).
  3. Capuchon selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel au moins une partie du canal est formée par l'espace situé entre l'agrafe (11) et le tube (13).
  4. Capuchon selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel l'agrafe (11) présente des bords tournés vers le bas, vers le tube (13), formant ainsi un tronçon formant canal inversé qui définit le canal (15).
  5. Capuchon selon la revendication 1, dans lequel au moins un canal (15) est formé par un perçage traversant l'agrafe (11) sur toute sa longueur.
